The 2013 has started with the launch of the Lotus E21 yesterday :Dancing_banana:
Interesting that Lotus is keeping the stepped nose design.
Reigning GP2 champion Davide Valsecchi joins as third driver.
Now can anyone spot who is wearing which TW Steel watch?
Kimi for WDC 2013 !!! :Dancing_banana:

Williams and Caterham exhaust designs deemed 'illegal'
Williams and Caterham have been told by Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, that it considers the exhaust designs on their cars to be illegal. The two teams have added extra bodywork rear of the exhaust to help enhance the way the gases work for aerodynamic effect, a key F1 technology.
But the FIA has told both teams it believes the designs contravene the rules governing bodywork in that area.
Williams and Caterham both say they are evaluating the situation. A Williams spokeswoman said: "The team spoke with the FIA this morning which is when they gave us their view. "The team are now seeking further clarification on this and a decision as to whether this design will be carried forward will be made before the first race." A Caterham spokesman added: "We are continuing to evaluate a range of options at the pre-season tests as per our normal program."
The controversy surrounds the area of the car rear of the exhaust exits, which is strictly controlled in an attempt to reduce the teams' ability to harness exhaust gases to increase aerodynamic downforce.
Lotus technical director James Allison said two weeks ago that he did not expect Caterham's design to survive until the first race.
The rules dictate that exhaust gases may not be redirected. But all teams are doing so to some extent, placing open-topped channels after the exhaust exits that are designed to control the gases through something called the Coanda Effect, which dictates that gases travelling along a surface will tend to stay attached to it.
The issue with the Caterham and Williams is that they have taken differing approaches to trying to direct the gases more extensively. Caterham have placed a small 'turning vane' (aerodynamically shaped piece of bodywork) in the channel, while Williams have almost totally enclosed the channel at one point, leaving just a tiny slot at the top. Williams technical director Mike Coughlan initially told the media at the launch of the team's new car on Tuesday that he believed Caterham's design was "clearly not allowed" whereas his own team's design was.
Williams have now been forced to reassess the situation following the intervention by the FIA. The governing body's stance means that the teams would risk being disqualified if they ran their cars in that specification at the first race in Melbourne, Australia on 15-17 March. But the teams can continue to run them in testing because it does not count towards the world championship.

Kimi for WDC 2013 !!!

Hi Peter,
Let's have a simple competition of predicting the 1st (25 points) , 2nd (18 points) & 3rd (15 points) position for every race, starting with this one. Points are given base on the accuracy of your prediction, which must be submitted 1 hour before the race.
For example if I predict (1) - Alonso (2) - Kimi (3) Vettel but the actual race result is (1) Webber (2) Kimi (3) Hamilton, then I get 18 points.
What say you?

I already "joined" hence my prediction for Msia.
Or when is the cut off time for the game?
Before race starts?
Ohh, my bad. I thought you was referring to yesterday race result.
According to 7thfort, we should put the prediction at least 1 hour before the race start, so of course your entry is valid. but if you waited for the qualifying it would benefit too. Or maybe it's better not to refer to qualifying, as Kimi's win yesterday is definitely a surprise.
-
I think 1hr before race start is fine.
As one cannot have any idea before quali.
-

Yup, i think so too. :)
so we will all wait until qualifying then...Saturday 4pm it will be.

Peter aka takashi78 started this threat, so he is the automatically the "boss" here, in a general sense. Ha3.
Yeah, you can post the prediction anytime but not later than 1 hour before the race start. Peter is a F1 "nut" so watch out for his prediction.
This is just for fun until we can find a sponsor for a prize for the winner who has the most points at the end of the season.
-
Nah i just like the tech that is associated with the sport and also the fitness level of the drivers i feel is the top of any athlete of any sport.
But ask me about football?
I know nuts except there is a thing called world cup every 4 yrs LOL.

http://blog.caranddriver.com/renault...mula-1-season/
The 2013 Formula 1 season is just getting underway, but Renault already is preparing a new engine for 2014 when a fresh set of rules goes into effect. The new engine drops two cylinders, adopts a more powerful electric boost, and most interesting, adds a turbocharger connected to a second electric motor.
The heart of the powertrain is a 1.6-liter, 90-degree V-6 now using direct injection and making more than 600 horsepower. Engine revs are capped at 15,000 rpm (versus 18,000 rpm for the current batch of V-8s) and a single exhaust replaces the outgoing V-8’s dual-exhaust setup. The hybrid-like KERS system is back, but it’s been renamed ERS-K (for Energy Recovery System-Kinetic) and the electric motor is twice as powerful, with a peak output of 161 horsepower. :o
The real novelty, though, is the addition of a second electric motor/generator connected to the turbocharger turbine. Known as ERS-H (Energy Recovery System-Heat), this electric unit both captures energy and occasionally feeds it back to the turbocharger to keep the compressor on boost. Rather than vent excess exhaust through a wastegate, the hot gasses spin the turbine to drive the generator, which then sends electricity to the batteries or capacitors. That electricity can be used either to power the wheels via the ERS-K motor or to spin the turbocharger compressor. By driving the compressor during braking, Renault can eliminate turbo lag.
Of course, necessity is the mother of invention, and Renault’s new engine is as much a product of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile as it is the French automaker. The iron-clad Formula 1 rulebook means engine builders Ferrari, Mercedes, and Cosworth—rumors persist that Honda could make a return to F1 as an engine supplier next season—inevitably will run with power units that are dimensionally and conceptually identical to Renault’s.
The new engine represents a significant departure from the 2.4-liter, naturally aspirated V-8s that have been used in Formula 1 since 2006. The FIA says its goal was to bring Formula 1 technologies closer to those of production cars and the basic principles—reduced displacement, turbocharging, and increased electrification—are right in line with trends we’re seeing on showroom floors. And just like in production cars, these changes are being made in the name of efficiency. While fuel consumption is currently unregulated, cars will be limited to 37 gallons of fuel per race and a maximum flow rate of 220 pounds per hour in 2014. At the same time, the rules encourage greater use of the electrified KERS system. While the systems supply about six seconds of boost per lap for 2013, the new rules will allow the electric assist to be used for up to 34 seconds per lap.

-
does this mean the overall speed of future F1 cars will reduced?
-
From what in the article makes you think that?
-
from previous Ferrari V10 - Type Tipo 055 - Capacity 2997 - 940 bhp
to current Ferrari V8 - Type Tipo 056 - Capacity 2398 - 735 bhp
to 2014 V6 - 600 bhp ++
just guessing only
-
Then you need to look at lap times.
Lap times has fallen even going from bigger to smaller engines.
Advancement in aerodynamics and also mechanical grip.
Plus F1 is on full slicks now.
-
seems like technologies are compensating the lower engine output
according to the article, the ERS-K will have a peak output of 161 bhp, so adding up to the 600 ++ V6 should be around 750 ++ bhp something like what they have now
with the aid of electric motor, can we say F1 is going hybrid :o
-
They already are on "hybrid" with KERS.
-

Damit how stupid was Alonso not to pit !
And BOOOOOOOO to Vettel for his show of "sportsmanship". He was not a team player.
Will be interesting to see how the partnership will develop during the course of the season.
Bad call also for Merc team, Rosberg could have passed easily.
But at least Hamilton admitted that Rosberg should be on the podium.
-
Very bad decision for Alonso indeed, cost him a whole race.
I feel bad for force India, real pity to see them struggle in the pit.
Also, I LOL very loudly when Hamilton went in the wrong pit.

BTW my surprised rookie this year is Bianci, he really can drive a shit car fast.
Catherham gonna be last this year, i am sure of that. And i thought Van Der Garde was good....
I had high hopes for Bottas and Williams is a great team to start your career, even though its not what it used to be.
Bottas disappoints.

I agree with you, it is fresh to see Sutil doing so well this year, just unfortunate he doesn't have a good pit crews in Sepang (or maybe a more corperative wheel nut  )
Catherham, :'( . btw, do Airasia boss Tony Fernandes still own them?

IMO, it doesn't matter. No sports event will ever survive if there is no business/marketing/making money involved.
From a business point of view, a long time client is always appreciated, and no one wants to lose a client such as ferrari. They have their own fan, selling hats and t-shirts and supercar alike, Ferrari depend on their F1 pedigree, while F1 depend on ferrari for their fans. Mutual interdependency.
Try imagine EPL without MU? or world cup without Brasil? there will always be hater, but thats part of the equation.
Or maybe think Ferrari as a "seeded player", as in badminton or tennis, thats the all-star, the standard setter and/or standard upkeeper.

I get your point, just like Tiger Woods charging appearance fees and received a large chunk of money before he could even stick a tee in the ground.

F1 is a billion dollar sport off course there will be LOADS of T&C.
Even you sign up a phone package has loads of T&C LOL.

Exactly. Money makes the world go round. It appear in EVERYTHING! (spooky voice) ;D
that said, it should not deter attention, a good sport is still a good sport. people will still watch golf, enjoy golf, and discuss Wood's scandal (TAG & Nike withdraw sponsorship is another thing thou.)
Similarly, F1 is still facinating millions ,with the thrills, the technologies, the drivers, the dispute & dramas, the accidents...

Jeremy Clarkson mentioned it in Top Gear last year. (or maybe a year before)
The whole place is littered with drawings of "gentleman sausage". (Also Jeremy's definition) ;D
If I did not remember wrongly, there is a video where Pagani Zonda R did a lap there couple years ago, and you can see the graffiti too.

Congrates to Takashi78, you scored 18 points. No changes to the standing thou for the time being.
7thfort is a very close call, you got all three podium correct, just off the sequence. You nearly scored a jackpot of 58 points. ;)
-
Ha3, that was fun. Well, congrats to Takashi78. Hope others score points too otherwise becomes boring.
-
Can we talk bout the race also?
This thread needs more of that haha....
1st thing, Sauber should have kept Kobayashi and have Estaban be reserve for at least one more year.
-
At the last lap, I was at the edge of my seat as Vettel was just behind Hamilton car's exhaust pipe. Vettel was using the option (soft) tire and doing 1.36 per lap as compared to Hamilton (worn) medium compound, which was giving him 1.41 per lap.
-
I was hoping when Webber was caught up to Vettel that he will take him out.
Who knew Webber hit the wrong RedBull :P

After race Kimi do said that he actually required the wing to be replaced, but since the damage wasn't that substantial, and replacing it might take too long, Lotus decided to let him fly without wings. (sorry, can't help the pun) ;D
Anyway, it does made me wonder, since one can do a whole race (plus a podium) without that wing, I wonder is it really functioning? might as well remove it all together and save some weight. ;D
-
He did not drive without a wing.
Just the front nose tip broken off.
Rest of the sides of the wing is still properly intact.
I would say the effect would be only few km/h slower top speed.

still can race with one eye?
If Zanardi can race i dont see why not for her.
Zanardi can work around the corner with prosthetic, just like Mick Doohan with his famous thumb brake, but an eye might be a bit too far fetch.
Eyes are way more important than limbs for a racing driver, they need to read the road, and the truth is, one cannot judge distance as well with only an eye. She will have a hard time telling distance, both chicane and other racers.
Thou I still hope the very best for Ms. Maria De Villota.

IMO, these dare devils are the best racer in the whole world. No gravel, tyre or fence, racing inch away from brick wall, that's bigtime ballsy. Even the name of the venue suite it well, isle of MAN. ;D
Sit back and enjoy. Do watch in HD.

Friendly reminder to all, the Spain Grand Prix is coming this weekend.
Race will be on Sunday, Malaysia time 8pm.
The weather forecast show rain on Friday, and sunny for Saturday & Sunday. So aspect a wet practice, but qualifying and actual race will be dry.
Maybe the white vs orange tyres dilemma will start all over again.

Poor Hamilton, struggling with brake issues.
Kimi really getting stronger every race.
For once, Vettel was out of touch with the leaders.

Merc is seriously lacking !
What the hell getting front row and then being passed so fast by others.
LOL at Hamilton on the radio "i was being passed by a Williams!"

Haha. No need to take it so seriously...
I took it purely as an amusement, just something fun to play. :)
Basically I just follow my hunch & put in whoever I like most. ;D

I kinda gave up on Merc if by mid season they still the same.
Fast in qualy but race pace sucks.
Mclaren is SERIOUSLY lacking this year.
Just hope James Alison leaving Lotus wont impact Kimi's car too much.

Monaco is a street circuit and power is not everything. Being on pole is important as overtaking is difficult. Tires is also not so crucial as those high speed track where tires get eaten up like we eat chocolates. So it is anybody's race. Maybe for this year, it would be nice to see Kimi win this race.
-
The last time Kimi win here is 7 years ago. Among the current grid of drivers, Webber and Alonso both had 2 wins under their belt in Monaco. And for the past 3 years it seems Red bull are doing very well in Monaco. However, Ferrari and Merc aren't very far either.
It is anyone's game.
-
My prediction.
1. Vettel
2. Alonso
3. Kimi
-
I follow also.
1. Vettel
2. Alonso
3. Kimi
As much as i wanna see Merc and Roseberg win, too many times this season thus far their race pace suck too much !

My prediction for 2013 Monaco GP
1) Nico Rosberg
2) Lewis Hamilton
3) Sebastian Vettel
-
Tonight’s race is EPIC.
One red flag, two safety car, and a race over two hour long.
Perez non-stop entertainment throughout the whole race, showing what he can do at chicane, and ending with a retirement in style. Sutil also not gimping as he demonstrates what he can do with the hairpin. Kimi’s leaps in the last few laps is superhuman. Vettel proves how lucky he can be, Hamilton proves how unlucky he can be, and Massa’s proves he can double fail at the same spot. Alonso sleep-walk the whole race, and Rosberg can be crowned as the getaway king. ;D

Too bad.
Despite the waiting during safety car & red flag, I actually enjoy it quite a lot.

Kimi climbed from all the way back to overtaking on the last lap to grab a point !

The FIA has announced that a Canadian Grand Prix marshal has died following an incident at the Montreal track on Sunday.
The marshal was helping to retrieve Esteban Gutierrez's crashed car following the race when he tripped while trying to retrieve a dropped radio and fell under the wheels of a mobile crane.
The marshal could not be seen by the driver of the crane, and was run over - suffering serious injuries.

It seems like Ferrari & Lotus are both clocking more overtakings, even teams that outperform in scoring points. Do you think is there anything to do with the F138 & E21 is better tweaked for such a job or maybe their team strategy allow them to do so more often (with tire preservation & fuel consumption in mind)? Or just simply driver's aggressiveness?

Silverstone coming next week.
This is the most unforgettable moment in Silverstone IMO.

Just imagine if the F1 cars are running in Sepang circuit now with all that haze now engulfing the whole country? I think all the cars will end up at the first corner.
-
Actually I think condition could be worst when racing in rain.
Drivers are practically driving blind especially when they are driving closely behind another racer. Plus their helmet visor should still be smudgy, despite high-tech innovation such as anti-fog & self-heating.

Engine blowing out can also be a contender. Anyone remember Sato's blowout in Monaco 2004? That resulted into a collision between Fisichella & David Coulthard, where the later got some impressive airtime and upside down.

Mercedes & Pirelli were recently rap on their knuckles for illegal tire testing.
Mercedes said they were not testing. Pirelli was. They only loan the cars and drivers.
Pirelli said they did not tell Mercedes what kind of tires were on the car and so Mercedes did not gain any advantage.
Smart partnership.
Well, both Ferrari & Red Bull didn't like it one bit because Pirelli did not invite them.

Red Bull driver Mark Webber has confirmed that he will be leaving Formula 1 at the end of the this season, with the 36-year-old Australian taking up an offer from German manufacturer Porsche to compete in its new LMP1 programme.
Webber's decision to retire will bring a 12-season spell in the sport to an end, seven of which have been with current employers Red Bull. He described it as "an honour" to sign for Porsche and is excited about the new chapter in his motorsport career.
"Porsche has written racing history as a manufacturer and stands for outstanding technology and performance at the highest level," he said. "I'm very much looking forward to this new challenge after my time in F1. Porsche will undoubtedly set itself very high goals. I can hardly wait to pilot one of the fastest sportscars in the world."
After making his Formula 1 debut with Minardi back in 2002, where he famously finished fifth, Webber moved on to race for Jaguar the following season. He spent two years with the team, before switching to Williams for a same-length spell. After moving to Red Bull in 2007, he has enjoyed the most successful phase of his career, claiming all nine of his Grand Prix victories with the Milton Keynes-based team.
However, Webber's time at the outfit has become increasingly strained. After a series of incidents in recent seasons, his relationship with team-mate Sebastian Vettel was pushed to breaking point at this year's Malaysian Grand Prix, during which the triple World Champion ignored team orders and made a successful pass for victory.
With Vettel's future secured until 2016, the search for his new team-mate will now begin. Kimi Räikkönen is one man on the list, with team boss Christian Horner explaining that the Finn "would have to be an option, if he were to be available."
The Toro Rosso pairing of Jean-Éric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo are also being assessed by Red Bull chiefs as they contest their second full Formula 1 campaigns.
-
Mark Webber, Porsche and Le Mans, sound like a very interesting combo. Porsche really know how to make their grand return.
Btw, what is the Mark Webber's spell referring to?

What a race, first half is the worst since America 2005, last few laps should be the best race this year.
Highest salute to Hamilton, first to last then end with forth. High respect for Alonso too. Kimi on the other hand, should've keep the pace till the end.
Finally, just to get it of my chest, Pirelli should change their motto to a new one "Pirelli: Avoiding Curbs".
-
Kimi couldnt keep up because his tires was 15-20 laps older than the rest.
-
I see. Now I realise that after you mentioned. Thanks for the heads-up.
-
I was hoping more tires would blow up LOL !
-
2 safety car interval, 4 blown rear left tires, Hamilton from hero to zero (because of a blown tire) and climb all up to 4th. I think Pirelli using celup tires lah.
Vettel was leading and I thought bezelnut & I will both have 25 point each only to have the engine kaput.
This weekend's race is at Nurburgring, Germany
-
Will Pirelli be using the same compound tyre for Germany as well? My feeling is that they don't have enough time to tweek that much, so maybe Nurburgring will end up with many blown tyre as well.

The FIA has agreed to open up the upcoming Young Driver Test to race drivers and extend it by an extra day in order to get to the bottom of the tyre issues seen at the British Grand Prix.
In a statement the FIA said it "is determined to seek an urgent solution to the problem and as such the FIA will change the format of this month's Formula One Young Driver Test". Race drivers should be able to offer better feedback on the tyres and will be allowed to test as long as it is clear they are carrying out tyre tests for Pirelli.
"Our priority is to ensure safety for all in Formula One and we believe the incidents at Silverstone represent a genuine safety concern for the drivers," FIA president Jean Todt said. "We have thus taken the decision to alter the Young Driver Test to allow teams to use drivers they deem fit to carry out tyre development work in a bid to solve the problems we saw at the British Grand Prix. I believe it is fitting to carry out this work at the circuit upon which the issues were manifested."
Mercedes will still be banned from the test, which is scheduled for July 17-19 at Silverstone, as part of its punishment for conducting a private test with Pirelli in May. However, in order to make the new test conform with the regulations, the FIA World Motor Sport Council is set to change article 22.4h (i) of the 2013 Formula One Sporting Regulations, which currently outlaws in-season testing.
Approval will also be sought to change the wording of article 12.6.3 of the 2013 Formula One Technical Regulations to allow Pirelli to change the specification of the tyres mid-season without the unanimous agreement of the teams.
However, with no time to test ahead of this weekend's German Grand Prix and the FIA has asked Pirelli for an assurance that there will be no repetition of the tyre problems at the Nurburgring.
-
Pirelli has confirmed that the development rear tyres it tested in Montreal earlier in the season will be supplied at this weekend's German Grand Prix, with the manufacturer reacting swiftly to the succession of blow-outs suffered at Silverstone.
The new tyres, fitted with Kevlar belts as opposed to steel, will be used throughout the Nürburgring weekend in a bid to avoid the failures witnessed at the British Grand Prix, before a new range, uniting the structures used throughout the 2012 campaign and the compounds from 2013, is introduced from the Hungarian Grand Prix onwards.
"What happened at Silverstone was completely unexpected and it was the first time that anything like this has ever occurred in more than a century of Pirelli in motorsport," explained Pirelli Motorsport Director Paul Hembery. "These incidents, which have upset us greatly, have stressed the urgency of the changes that we already suggested – which will be introduced during free practice in Germany on Friday."
The Kevlar-belted tyres had originally been planned for introduction at Silverstone in the wake of delaminations in Bahrain and Spain, but Ferrari, Lotus and Force India opposed. On Monday, the FIA confirmed planned rule changes which give Pirelli the right to make changes without the need for unanimous consent amongst the teams.
Meanwhile, Pirelli's post-race investigations have uncovered four key factors leading to the Silverstone failures, with the company arguing that the swapping of left and rear tyres, low pressures, extreme camber angles and sharp kerb edges all played a part.
For the German Grand Prix, asymmetrical tyres will still be in use, with tyre-swapping due to be prohibited for the duration of the event. However, from Hungary, the new range will feature symmetrical tyres, meaning it will no longer pose a problem.
Pirelli has also asked governing body the FIA to ensure the strict regulation of tyre pressures and camber angles for the remainder of the season, with the company adamant that its products are safe if operated within the recommended windows.
The upcoming Young Driver test at Silverstone and two additional three-day tests, at which the running of 2013 machinery has been sanctioned by the FIA, will serve as extra track time for Pirelli to fine-tune its changes before the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Another Red Bull's guy, Sebastian Loeb just smashed the world record of Pikes Peak by a staggering 90 seconds. This guy already have 9 WRC world championship under his belt.

Loeb already announced he will join WTCC next year.
And i dont have much respect for the record time at pikes peak this year.

Haha. Better luck next time.
Btw, one achievement unlocked for Vettel for winning in his own nation, also winning in the month of July.

Since the cameramen injuries in Germany, FIA had made a few amendment. One of which caught my attention is the reduction of speed limit in all tracks from 100km/h to 80km/h (except for Australia, SIngapore and my favorite Monaco, which is already at 60km/h)
Do you think reducing the pit lane speed limit is a wise move?
-
They are gonna reduce the speed for 2014 anyways.
Just implement sooner.
Has nothing to do with how the wheel was put on Webbers car.
Thats more of a team technical and operational issue.

Berlin completes Formula E calendar
Pablo Elizalde | July 11 2013
Berlin has been revealed as the final city that will host a round of the Formula E championship when the series kicks off in 2014.
The German capital is the third European city to join the series alongside London and Rome, while U.S. rounds in Los Angeles and Miami are also expected.
The new fully electric racing series will run from September 2014 to June 2015, with the calendar including 10 events, all on street circuits. Berlin's circuit will be built within the Apron section of the former Tempelhof Airport.
"We are delighted to be in Berlin and very grateful to the Senator and to the Berlin authorities for welcoming our championship to their city," said series boss Alejandro Agag. "With more than 1,200 electric vehicles and over 220 public charging points already in circulation, Berlin is leading the way in Europe for innovation and sustainable mobility, which is why we selected it as a host city for Formula E."
The final Formula E calendar will feature London, Rome, Los Angeles, Miami, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Putrajaya, Bangkok, and Berlin. It will be presented to the FIA's World Motor Sport Council for approval in September.

Well, in my opinion, I think since in and out of every pit will obviously take longer time, team strategy might opt for even fewer pit stops. But I think with current Pirelli life-span, that might not be an option. Also, drive-thru penalty will hurt more too.
I think you are right, if teams keep bolting tyre loose, no reduction of speed will help anyway.
Btw, Formula E, will I be like watching F1 with television's volume set on mute?

Mario Kart woohoo !
Sebastian Vettel donned a Super Mario costume to take part in Red Bull's Soapbox Derby in Germany at the weekend, completing the downhill course in a gravity-powered go-kart.
The three time world champion removed his fake moustache before the run, presumably to gain an aerodynamic advantage, and launched his soapbox racer down the 500m course, getting airborne over jumps. As one of the judges at the event he was not an official competitors but entered into the full spirit of the event nonetheless, to the delight of the locals lining the course in the town of Herten.
Meanwhile, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner was taking part in a sister event at Alexandra Palace in London. Horner drove a soapbox racer made of old parts of Red Bull F1 cars and dressed in full Red Bull overalls and helmet. However, there was an air of controversy surrounding his run as he had the final hay-bale chicane removed in order for the course to be wide enough for his factory-built racer.
Nevertheless, it was the Newcastle-based Spit-Phya team that won the London event in a soapbox resembling Donald Campbell's land-speed record breaking Bluebird.

I was actually surprised by Ferrari decided to give him another car and go out again. Good guy Ferrari.
here's another longer video, this one show a bit more of the aftermath and how he examine the damage.

An unexpectedly fun race to watch. Congrats for Hamilton (and all hamilton's fan out there) for his 1st win this year, also first win with Mercedes. Also congrats for Williams to finally scoring (Yay!).
Kimi's 2 pit stop pays off once again, lucky this time Lotus finally man-up and not go chicken like in Germany. His fending with Vettel during the last two laps really got me chew my nails off.
And Romain, real nice driving, I think he is actually the best performer in tonight's race, for putting up so much epicness and garnish it with that turn 4 overtaking. Yes, I do think he should really work with his spatial awareness, but that drive-thru penalty is a bit harsh. What do you guys think?

Wow, Sepang is the most expensive circuit, and Monaco is FREE!?
-
No wonder Sepang facilities is quite bad IMO.
Monaco free cause of their "prestige" as a venue.
-
No wonder Sepang facilities is quite bad IMO.
Mind elaborate? I can't link bad quality with high price here. I thought since FIA is spending more $ in Sepang, it should be better facilities then.
-
Dude you have it reversed.
Sepang is PAYING Bernie to host the race.
Money all spent to pay them, you think lot is left to "upgrade" Sepang?
-
LOL.
No wonder it make no sense at all.
So to put it in another way, Monaco has the highest appeal so Prince Albert II just sit there and FIA come begging, while Malaysia is paying big money so Bernie will not ditch that circuit. Now am I right this time?
-
Dont know why would you think otherwise.

Check this video. So beautiful.

Just like the so called "Monsoon Cup" at Terengganu for the yachting fraternity where our government is paying for the event to be stage here to boost local tourism. It is a terrible waste of money. Could have been better spend on school, hospital, roads, policing, etc.
-

This guy is a loose cannon. I think he deserved the penalty.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6GLT5VdWH8
Running into Button is a bit reckless, and that post race penalty he deserve, but I think the drive-thru penalty for overtaking Massa is too harsh. Massa is pushing him of track, he is simply avoiding collision there.
-
Agreed. The Massa "incident" was uncalled for.
Of all the recent GP2 champions i think Romain is doing quite ok. Granted he is in a Lotus.
I think The Hulk would do much better if given the same car.
Hulk was ruthless in A1GP !
-
So glad that you can see eye to eye with me. I have high hope for Romain.
I would agree too Hulkenberg can be great if not because of Sauber. Heck, I think he would have done even better if he stay in Force India. He still own the most successful A1 driver title, of course because the race is no more, no way anyone to have broken that record too. Btw, words is that he might take over Kimi's place in Lotus next year, or even race in a Ferrari. High hope for him too.

Just had an idea, to ease of the boredom of summer break, why not compile the most memorable moment (can be epic win or fail) in the legendary Spa?
I'll start first with this, which I rank as number 1 memorable moment.
Senna saves Eric Comas.

Refer this picture as another angle of La Source.

See how close the photojournalist are with the track? And the barrier wall is not really high, so Romain's airborn last year will be freaking terrifying.

7thfort, can give me your bomoh's number? I just fired mine. ;D
Anyway, Vettel overtake in lap 1 and dominate, then win with a huge gape in front of Alonso.
Hamilton just aint fast enough, and I suspect today's 3rd & 4th has a lot to do with Mercedes's consistency. Good job for them.
Bad luck for Kimi, ended his 27 scoring streak. That said, his last DNF is 2009, so he is still very lucky already in another sense.
Button should've stick to 1 stop strategy. McLaren still disappoint.
Also, to get it off my chest, I'm starting to really hate the stewards now, whole race is littered with penalties. And that 10 seconds stop go is just mean.
Boring as hell. Should've rain.

Singapore GP coming this weekend, weather forecast shows that probably it will be a very wet weekend. :Dancing_banana:
Any WMF member will be attending?
-
Qualifying in on Saturday - 21 September 2013 and Raceday is on Sunday - 22 September 2013.
The Singapore circuit is named a street circuit, similar to Monaco. Outright horsepower is not a real advantage unlike purposely built F1 circuit like the Sepang F1 circuit which has 2 long straights.
If it rains, the race becomes totally unpredictable.
Last year's top 3 were:
1. Vettel
2. Button
3. Alonso

Cartoonishly funny, but educative at the same time.
Surprise how fast the tyre heat up.
-
Tires are already heated to about 80c even before they start.
-
At the point of brake lock-up just before the collision, you can see the tires "light up", due to the intense friction/heat built-up.

Today's news, Alonso may go to McLarens.

By the way, the Singapore F1 Race is held after the sun set.

Kimi, respect!
13th to 3rd with a sore back.
How the hell is it that Webber's car always breaks and Vettel gets the win?
Webba should just crash into the kid in the last few races.
BTW look at the details we dont see often!

Kimi is a fighter. Webber is unfairly treated by his team. Ptui!

No worries. You are doing a great job.
Looks like if you place Vettel as No. 1, you can't go wrong. Too predictable. Hopefully next year will be more interesting than watching grass grow.

This weekend F1 is at Yeongam, South Korea.
Rain (from a passing typhoon) is expected. That should liven up the procession a little. We shall see.

Hi Bezelnut,
Missed your participation.

Ya, too busy during the weekend that I totally forgot about it. Will participate this coming weekend's Japan Grand Prix.
-
Oh OK. Don't forget the race is early at 2 pm on Sunday, like in Korea.

THE POLE NEMESIS
For the 16th time in his career, Lewis Hamilton was second to a Red Bull car on the grid. Vettel has claimed pole 13 times with Hamilton second, while on the other three occasions it was Mark Webber ahead.
That's a high value, but not close to the 23 times Michael Schumacher was pipped for pole by a Williams car. That's the record in F1 for a driver coming second in qualifying to a rival team.
Hamilton has now had 26 second places on the grid. On 16 of those occasions, pole was 'stolen' by a Red Bull. Six were by a Ferrari, always Felipe Massa, during 2007-8. He was pipped by team-mates on the other four occasions: Fernando Alonso at McLaren in Monaco and Italy in 2007, and Nico Rosberg at Mercedes in Spain and Monaco this year.
F1's record number of second places in qualifying belongs to Alain Prost, who started from the humble side of the front row 53 times.
He was beaten for pole by a team-mate 28 times and 26 times by his arch-rival Ayrton Senna (19 when they were team-mates at McLaren, six times when Prost was at Ferrari and once when Prost was at Williams).
Hamilton is only one second place shy of compatriot Damon Hill, who was second on the grid 27 times.
Hill's main nemesis was Prost, who beat him to pole 10 times, all in 1993, when they were team-mates at Williams. Hill was also beaten for pole nine times by his mid-'90s rival Schumacher.
Schumacher is second in the rankings for second places on the grid with 48 such results. Only six times was he beaten by a team-mate for first place, but he has no particular qualifying nemesis - he was second on the grid to no fewer than 17 different drivers in his career. Hill comes out on top, having scored pole in front of Schumacher seven times.
David Coulthard counts 26 second places on the grid, like Hamilton. His nemesis was his McLaren team-mate Mika Hakkinen, who was on pole 15 times with Coulthard second during the 1998-2000 campaigns.
Vettel and Hamilton shared the front row for the 20th time in Korea. That's the same number as Vettel and his team-mate Webber.
-
KOREA STAT ROUND-UP
• Kimi Raikkonen was second for the sixth time this year, closing in on the season record of seven, recorded six times in F1 history, once by Raikkonen himself in 2003. The others are: Nelson Piquet 1987, Prost 1988, Hakkinen 2000, Rubens Barrichello 2004 and Alonso 2006.
This was Raikkonen's first Yeongam podium, which means the only remaining current F1 tracks where he has yet to take a top-three finish are the upcoming Buddh and Austin circuits.
• Romain Grosjean's third podium of the season mirrored his previous two: just as in Bahrain and Germany, he was third behind Vettel and Lotus team-mate Raikkonen. In five of his six career podiums he has finished behind his team-mate, adding Bahrain and Hungary last year to the 2013 trio.
• Renault had its third podium sweep of the year and its 160th F1 win. In 1996, Renault engines filled the podium five times.
• Nico Hulkenberg matched his best career result of fourth, achieved in Belgium last year. His Sauber team-mate Esteban Gutierrez did the same in 11th (scored previously in Spain).
• As he avoided his spinning Ferrari team-mate Massa, Alonso lost a place on the opening lap for the first time since the 2011 Indian Grand Prix, breaking a string of 35 races in which he either gained places or maintained his grid position (his accidents at the start at Spa and Suzuka last year are excluded as he didn't complete the first lap). Sixth place at the flag was the worst result for Alonso at this track.
• Pastor Maldonado, on the other hand, recorded the best start of the season, gaining nine places on the opening lap.
• Webber's win drought reached 25 races after Korea, the same as he endured from the 2010 Belgian GP to the 2011 Abu Dhabi GP, and the longest since he started winning, back in Germany 2009.
• Force India recorded another double retirement, the fourth this year after Malaysia, Hungary and Italy. In its last 10 starts, the team saw the chequered flag only twice, with Sutil in Belgium and Singapore.
It is dead last in the teams' ranking of kilometres run this year on 6958. Toro Rosso is second to last at 7269. The team that's run most kilometres this year is McLaren (8431), as a result of recording only three retirements – in the closing stages in Malaysia, Monaco and Great Britain. Its drivers have both been officially classified in every race so far.
• This was Vettel's 42nd pole and the 208th for a Renault engine, as the French firm equalled Ferrari at the top of the all-time standings. It was also the 125th pole for a German driver; Germany now shares second on the all-time list with Brazil, while Great Britain leads on 217.
• After Jules Bianchi's penalty for impeding Paul di Resta, Vettel became the only driver who has started in front of his team-mate in all 14 races so far this year.
• In his four Korean Grands Prix, Alonso has now occupied all the grid slots from third to sixth: third in 2010, fourth in '12, fifth this year and sixth in 2011. This was his 28th fifth place on an F1 grid, matching the all-time record set by Rubens Barrichello

De Villota found dead in hotel room
11 October 2013
Ex-Marussia reserve driver María de Villota has been found dead in a hotel room in Seville. The Spaniard, who was working for the Banbury-based outfit when she suffered life-threatening injuries in a testing crash last year, was 33.
A statement published on de Villota's Facebook page on Friday morning, signed by her family, explained: "Dear friends: Maria has left us, she had to go to heaven like all angels. We thank God for the extra year and a half that he left her with us."
Although de Villota lost her right eye and suffered major skull damage after hitting a trailer during the aforementioned straight line test at Duxford Aerodrome, she was able to recover and returned to the F1 paddock at this year's Spanish Grand Prix.
De Villota formerly contested the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and Superleague Formula, and was the daughter of ex-Formula 1 racer Emilio.
GPUpdate.net extends its condolences to the family and friends of María de Villota.

Lotus’s Kimi Raikkonen will start Sunday’s 2013 Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from the back of the grid after his car failed a post-qualifying floor deflection test at Yas Marina. Raikkonen had qualified fifth.
“Car number 07 did not comply with Article 3.17.5 of the 2013 FIA Formula One Technical Regulations as the front floor deflected more than 5mm vertically when the load was applied vertically to it at the point which lies 100mm of car centre line on the LHS,” said a technical report by the FIA’s Formula One technical delegate, Jo Bauer.

This weekend race, the penultimate race for 2013, will be at Austin's Circuit of The Americas, USA.
Qualifying is 2 am Sunday (our time) and race day is 3 am on Monday (our time).
Kimi has decided to sit out this race because of back problem and needing surgery to prepare for 2013 season. There is a also a spat with the team, which he said has not paid him his salary for some time. Kimi goes to Ferrari in 2014 to partner Alonso.
