Let's talk Panerai
« on: June 23, 2015, 09:03:36 AM »
Any Panerai fans here?

What are the cool panerais out there.

I only know PAM360, PAM127 and PAM217 and now thinking about acquiring a Panerai.

Can panerai fans out there please provide some guidance on Panerais?

I also want to get my 1st Panerai. The shortlisted models are: PAM104, PAM48, PAM312, and PAM392 which within my desire budget. But i think my final choice will be PAM392 cause I have tiny wrist (5.7inch) and it is in-house movement.

I've previously owned the 560, 233 and currently on a 270

Love the 1950s case and the dome shaped glass.

270 comes with a 10 day power reserve, automatic, gmt and date. The complete Pam imo.

I started with a 380 and then traded up for 425. Both are radiomir which is the stepbrother and a lot less popular compared to the luminor. I am a radiomir guy cause I like the pillowcase shape.

With panerai, the myriad options is too many and each and every model have got very subtle difference only. So figuring out and choosing Panerai is very tough. I went through this excercise but when I was at the shop choosing my purchase, they all look great. I could walk home with any of them.

Especially those with Domes / Propped out Crystal ( 372, 425, 233...). The reflection of the light will awww you if you catch it on the right angle.

Then there are those with the Black Materials ( PVD, Ceramic .. ) those are another unique series.

Panerai is like Potato Chips. You can't have one too many. When I got my first one, i was already thinking of my second and it never ends. I think it's quite hard to stop at just one watch for Panerai.

Thanks for the info.

Yes agree with you 372 is one of the nicest PAM out there, I wonder if the release of 372 reduced the price of 127?

For me also there can be only 1 Pam in my collection, well it has to be a bit special. At the moment I am thinking about hunting for a PAM217. Anyone have any insights on this?

Yes 372 is cheap and damn nice!! agree with you. One of the nicest PAM there is.

Bro; You mention 372 is cheap? Well, cheap or expensive is subjective, what is cheap to you might be astronomical amount to some and of course vice-versa. If you consider the PAM00372 is cheap, then you should just go to any PANERAI boutique to buy your first PANERAI watch. If I am not mistaken, a brand new 372 cost about MYR29,000.00

If I be you, thinking of getting your first PAM, buy the 351/312 (both are self-winding) or 562/560 (8-Days manual) or 564/510 (8-Days manual with small seconds hand) All are good looking watches. All are 44 MM case. Just a matter of personal preference of Auto/Manual, Steel/Titanium and LUMINOR Marina 1950/LUMINOR Base.

To clarify the reason why I mentioned it was cheap it because the 372 is over 50% of the price of the 127. That is a 127 maybe value at around 60k RM? but 372 around 29k RM RPP? see what I mean.

I was comparing vs 127. That is what I mean by cheap. Is not mean RM29k is cheap lol.

I been to panerai boutique in SG and I can tell you that I won't be buying anything from there at this stage because prices are not "cheap" there. Last time I was there they were letting me try on some of the stuff that are hard to shift, like some rose gold pieces.

Why would you get 351/312 or 562/560 or 564/510 any other reason for it or just because good looking? I prefer the luminor 50's.

Frankly, the 127 is overpriced, that's only IMHO. It is selling at such a high price because it is no more in production. And,,, they call the 372 the killer of 127. Likewise, it is all subjective. Getting a PANERAI watch is all about personal preference, there is no right or no wrong. If you really like the 372 and the 50's look, why not consider the 390N too? It is similar to the 372/127 but it is 44MM. Only 2000 pieces produced. I guess it will cost about USD8,900.00 if you can still find a new one.

Why pick 351/312, 562/560 or 564/510? Well, again IMHO & personal likes, Titanium and Steel. I like the lightness of the titanium when worn. You can really feel the weight difference between Steel/Titanium. However, steel is what most people go for. Another thing about steel. PANERAI offer both brushed or polished steel cases. Brushed steel will not scratched as easily as the polished steel. The bezel are all polished steel though unless you have gotten a titanium model.

Really, to chose a PAM, I think first and foremost is to know the size of your wrist. What is the point of getting a 47MM or a 44MM watch and you look like you are wearing a table clock on your wrist? It is out of proportion. I do not have a big wrist, my wrist is 175 MM and my straps are all 125/75 MM. It is just right for me. This is all based on my personal experience and not watch science. If your wrist is small, you might want to consider those smaller models like PAM00048 (40 MM) or the PAM00523 - white dial/00392 - black dial (42 MM) both with the P9000 all in-house movement.

Please take a look at the proportion when the watch is worn.

This is PAM00320 mounted on brown alligator strap from Vintager Straps.

Thanks for the info Waikeekee!! really appreciate it

Yes the 127 is overpriced but I think price have gone down a lot since the panerai hype. Before the price was insane now soft already I recently saw one for sale at $14k USD. I was researching the price before and saw some adds back in 2009 it was about 18-20k+ USD. I think pre GFC prices were higher. All used pieces we talking here. Still well over the retail.

Nice pics btw. Well proportioned! you have slim wrist my friend!

I noticed that you have a lot of panerais too! nice collection.  have you ever thought of consolidating all your panerai's to just one ultimate panerai  ;D

I agree with chrisyen; one PAM is never quite enough!

For me, when choosing my first PAM, of course my biggest consideration was budget. Within my range were 111/112, 000/005, 176/177. After weeks of trying to decide between sandwich or sausage, logo or no logo, etc... I then had to consider new or pre-owned. For these entry PAMs, most boutiques either 1) sell at a significant premium or 2) sell to you at retail if you pick up a rose gold piece  ;D

My eventual result:

Does it look too big for me? Personally, I think it look ok; now itching for a 47mm. Hehe.

The significant differences are
372 is plexi glass.
127 crown guard is different and 1950 means a lot.
217 is lefty with mm and bezel slightly different.
368 is lefty and 8 days.

127 get my vote.. Anyway, u may consider 203.

I like your vote  ;D and your suggestion! yes 203 is a grail piece. I love it more than a 21. For me it is 203 is considered one of the ultimate grail piece. But I have reserved that spot for PP.

The 392 is a great one, but it wears a little heavy and thick on the wrist (though when I changed the strap to rubber it was more comfortable).

If 42mm is the criteria, I suggest the Radiomir 512.

I have both these models and the 512 wins by a long way, though I guess that depends on personal preferences.

Chris no doubt your right about one is not enough haha. Just wondering what are you thoughts on 127 and 217?

These 127 n 217 are early 1950 case 47mm pams. It's rare at that time, hence collectors willing to pay high to get it.

So when panerai start making 1950 case 47mm regular many collectors piss off, some of them wanted to sell it...
127 printed 1950 on the dial, spoil the overall look of pam.
Pam 372 is much closer to it's original vintage piece, full panerai DNA, hence ppl call it, ' the panerai '
1950 47mm polished cushion case
Crown guard like 6152/1
Gold hands
Clean dial
Vintage lume

If one day a model with pam372 replace with pencil gold hands, collectors will chase it

217 it's lefty... Same comment as above

Above is my personal view base on my observation

Let's catch up for a coffee talk on pam
