Hi guys, want to share with you my experience. I just bought a watch from Chino in Japan. It arrived in Malaysia on 12/5 and was held in customs. On 14/5, Pos Malaysia contacted me and asked if I wanted to appoint them as the customs clearing agent or go to sepang to do it myself. Since it was too far away, I decided to appoint them.
They then emailed me a form to tick my preference of appointing them and I sent it back via email. To be noted here that all correspondence with Pos after the initial phone call was via email. On 15/5 they emailed the amount to be charged by customs and asked me to tick my agreement to pay. I was away for the weekend and only managed to reply them on 18/5. Today, 20/5 they called me to tell me that my parcel had cleared customs and was on its way to the pos laju HQ in KL Sentral. 10 minutes later, a staff from the HQ called me to confirm that my parcel had arrived.
I took the lrt over and gave them my parcel number, paid the custom duty (gst), they only accept cash for this, and received my parcel.
They charge RM30 for agent fee and there is an RM18 charge by customs for the forms. Add RM2.88 gst for these charges and the total "other costs" is RM50.88 in addition to the gst on your watch.
Overall, I'm quite happy with the process (not the gst payment) as it was convenient, everything via email, and the pos laju HQ is accessible as it is in KL Sentral.
Sorry, forgot to mention that this was via EMS post, not FedEx or DHL.
