In 1997 at the age of 60, José Albaladejo founded Carmina Shoemaker with the goal of creating some of the world’s best hand-crafted shoes. In pursuing this goal, Albadalejo continues a prestigious family tradition of almost 150 years of shoemaking, drawing on skills passed down to him through several generations of shoemakers. Carmina has established six exclusive shops (in Paris, Marbella, Bilbao and Palma de Majorca, and two in Madrid) and competes with some of the best shop displays in Europe, Japan and the United States that showcase the most distinguished English shoemakers.

a good read on shoe construction ;D
http://www.theshoesnobblog.com/2011/07/shoes-part-1-construction.html
http://www.askandyaboutclothes.com/forum/showthread.php?85307-Shoe-Construction
from the web
"I see two principal advantages for Goodyear-welted shoes, both emanating from the same aspect of construction. First, they are relatively water-resistant. Because nothing goes through the face of the insole of the shoe, groundwater doesn't have an easy path into the interior of the shoe. In contrast, with Blake construction, there is a row of stitching through the face of the insole connecting it to the outsole, which allows groundwater to wick into the interior of the shoe. Second, they are relatively comfortable (assuming that the last fits the wearer's foot well) because there isn't a row of stitching on the face of the insole to irritate the bottom of the wearer's foot. In addition, most makers of ready-made shoes put a layer of cork amalgam in the void between the ribs on either side of the insole; and this cork amalgam molds to the bottom of the foot, which sometimes enhances comfort."

Great to see some members like some fine leather shoes.
Too bad my work doesnt present me the chance to wear such shoes. Too formal.
At least the penny loafers can be paired with shorts or jeans.

how does the Bexley compare to the Loake
Bexley Shoe is definitely better than the regular Loake series .
A better comparison is Loake 1880 (Made in England) vs Bexley Shoes (Made in Portugal I think)
Stitching , finishing & workmanship wise Bexley is better , but not by far .
Loake 1880s use better leather , therefore has a better "feel" to it . The "tick" sounds better too .
In terms of fit , Loake 1880 has much more to offer (F,E,G) ..Bexley Shoes only has one standard cut .
Price point ..its a RM500 shoe against a RM800 shoe .
If both shoes fits like glove and both are comfortable .
I would pick Bexley as beater and save up for a John Lobb for special events .
If Bexley doesn't fit , go for Loake 1880
below RM500 ? currently Sagara having sales and after conversion is around there

but it is very painful to liase with Bagus from Sagara, he is so slow in replying :'(
Most shoe snobs i know has the "If its not made in England (or at least Europe) i am not interested" attitude , ROFL .
Its like how some of us who are into watches are all "in house movement , if its ETA i am not interested" .
Well , if you are interested in Asian shoes . Check out Ed Et Al Singapore . They are going for about RM700 with almost C&J quality (read from reviews)

^ thanks for the review, will definately chcking Ed out soon

Too bad no stock :Blue:

Too bad this kinda skin products kinda freak me out!
No go for me hehe.
I wonder, those loafers with non leather bottoms ie rubber etc, able to resole?
One big thing keeping me from buying a NICE pair loafers are the leather soles.
I always walk outside and you know Malaysia roads, all kinds of environment and rain....are the leather soles practical?
Or do i have to only wear them on special occasions?

Are Clarks & Dr. Marten English shoes as well? Or already become Buatan M'sia?
I particularly like Dr. Marten shoes due to its lasting rubber bottom sole. Have been wearing these 2 brands many years.
Thx,

You can get Rubber soles or Crepe soles if you are worried .
Or , just wear the leather soles until it is screwed and change them .
Sometimes , leather sole doesn't necessary mean its high end .

They are not . Its kinda sad that the best shoes we can find in a typical Msian shopping mall are - Clarks , Zara and florsheim.
Still , i think they are very overpriced , Clarks are selling RM450 for a Made in India Shoe . Check out Bexley or Herrings shoe .

Not really a shoe guy but years ago dr. Marten was made in the uk. Most people in the aviation industry use them as the soles are acid and alkaline resistant. I use to get them from farming supplies store in the uk. You can get them treated and they will become water resistant. This is of course before they became fashion shoes.

I always wondered, how practical or lasting is the leather soles of these in our Msian weather?
I dont always walk indoors so with rain, dirt outside and such...is it lasting?

i've a few pairs that i've been wearing for the past 4-5 years (without the addition of a rubber sole or taps) with no issue. they are still far from the need to resole. as long as u remember to dry them, don't wear them again the next day and keep em properly polished, it shd be fine. why are u always walking in the rain anyway?
-
Nowdays its raining always and my car is parked far from my office.
Hence walking outside a lot.

Cool shoe, I actually wanted to get this model in the Alden boutique in SFO. How are the American made Aldens and AE compared to the European brands?
I honestly prefer the old school look of the American made shoes or maybe I have been reading too much Free & Easy.

i also prefer american shoe now, i think they can take the beating :HammerHead:
-
I just went shoe shopping at P Lal Store Jalan Gasing earlier. Bought 2 pairs of Loake. I was looking at slip ons or loafers cos lazy to tie shoe lace. My working life I only wore first pair of shoe lace tying shoes. The rest are loafers.
Nothing branded. Casual shoes were also loafers then. College days was Fifth Avenue moccasins. And also Hi Tec hiking shoes then bought from Pertama Complex. Also wore Nike sports shoes. I have a pair of Timberland in the cupboard now bought 8 years ago and still wearable. Now I wear crocs everyday.
Current working shoe is an Aldo. 2 years of being worn every working day. So I thought after seeing this thread and also sooner later I need to buy shoes, I went to P Lal. Hehe. One is a loafer the other with lace. The lace one is made in UK. Loafer made in India. But both Goodyear welted.

Brown I think got. Not sure cos they displayed black and I asked for black one :p I think in Loake website they do offer brown one too. The thing is P Lal import theirs shoes once a year so what they have there, is what's available.
U go there u will like cos they have all these English brands there. I wanted to leave until the old P Lal uncle must be related to the family asked me, if I like shoe with laces. Asked me to try, and damn he was right, it was comfortable and fits well. So I thought, why not. So bought the Cagney Oxford.

I can only say that the price at P Lal is as per listed in Loake official website. Affordable. Initially I thought there will be lots of mark ups but no, very reasonable. They have a wide range. The old uncle told me P Lal is the largest Loake distributor in SEA. I think tourists go there to buy too.

There's a nice pair of brown Loake tassel loafers at PLAL that I almost bought until I got sidetracked by something else.
Anyway, what was on today...

Hi Kelvin, nice shades of blue. I would love to wear those blue shoes but my casual wear really casual. A pair of jeans and sandals. Or cargo shorts with sandals. The most, maybe my Timberlands. Problem is I am not dressy on weekends. Even at the malls. I love your shoes though. And also Ivan's good taste in his leathers. And another fashionable chap, Terence.
May i ask if your colourful shoes or your blue linen pants are part of your working wardrobe or usual attire in your working days? I cannot be wearing blue leather shoes in my profession. Too fashionable. LOL. I have a pair of NB sneakers. Is that fashionable? I lean towards the more conservative part when it comes to attire.
I have taken great interest in leather shoes recently. Especially those where handmade or great efforts used in their production. Are you usually this dressed up, even on a Sunday?

Kenny, those are my blue cotton khakis (not linen) and they are part of my casual wear attire. Though I wear all my shoes at work anyway (I have flexibility).
NB? I used to have quite a few 574s but for sneakers, I'm more of an OT person. As for being dressed up on Sundays, occasionally, when I go kaikai, I do like to look neat, smart and at least, try to be stylish ;)
Ivan, nope... not Mantellasis. Those are actually a pair of Cheaneys

sounds like u hate dressy shoes hahaha ;D
those are non Goodyear welted, non English ROCKPORTs... with adiprene inner sole it's actually quite comfy. i've added a layer of scholls inner soles to add to the protection.
-
How did you come up with that conclusion? ;D
More like 99% of the time my day to day and even work i dont have much chance wearing them. :P
My formal dress shoe is just a Camper loafer hahaha

LOL !

Are John Lobb really that well made?
Anyone here handled a pair and can comment on the construction and leathers used?

Seen a few online and read bout the name.
Gonna be in Taipei next month which has a boutique.
Thought to check it out.
Online search it cost 3x-5x more for the loafer (Lopez)
Thinking is it "worth it".
My current pair of Bally loafers i had them for well over 10yrs, still running strong.
Only thing is its not wide enough hence cant wear them for long hrs.
Also the logo patch has came off, Bally wanted rm600 to replace them which is ridiculous!
Its on a rubber molded sole. So can assume not welted right?
Bought the pair when the Bally boutique closed down in San Francisco for real cheap, mayb i didnt pay too much attention to the width then. Should have gone with E/EE instead of D.
So Kelvin,
What say you on the JL?
The quality of the leather and craftsmanship commands its price?
This would be my lifetime loafer if i do get it. ;D

for english RTW, i think no other brand commands higher respect than JL or Edward Green. both are quite impeccable and have beautiful last shapes. that said, other than stylistic and design elements, you will find some (though not much) improvements over a pair of shoes of a similar RTW grade from the other top English shoemakers e.g. C&J, Sargent, etc. these 'improvements' may not justify the premium in price. so the style and design is going to be the deciding factor here.
personally, if the price is right and if you REALLY like it, then go for it. you'd hardly regret it. but pls take care of it well (shoe horn, shoe tree, polish, pls dont wear everyday etc). get a wholecut at least lah even if it's just a loafer.
-
From the website it looks like the Lopez is the only model which is whole cut?
Thats the style i like actually. Not too "pointy".
What are the merits of whole cut?

it won't make u walk better... just to show off the skill of the shoemaker and also ensuring that they have to use a nice bigger piece of unblemished leather for your shoes.
btw i don't see why u say the Lopez is a wholecut. it's not.
example of a wholecut pair of loafers (whole upper is one piece of leather stitched together at the heel or sometimes even without any stitching at the heel from some very high end options).

Ah...now i see what you mean.
Looking at JL loafers i dun think any is whole cut.
I saw the description as " crafted from a section of leather that is cut in one piece. " for the Lopez so i thought it was whole cut.
Well i guess would have to see the models in person to decide.
Hope have time and around the boutique area.

actually ya, imho, if u wanna spend so much, better get a really nice pair of wholecut oxfords from JL. buying a pair of loafers from JL is like spending top dollar on a nice A or B class from MB (more like a 2nd car option if u get my drift).
u'll find greater value for money if u got a nice pair of loafers from PLAL.

I do not want to sound cruel or offensive to anyone...no matter what shoes you wear, especially those formal and office shoes, just make sure that you guys get the right length when it comes to the socks...to me, there is nothing worse than exposing your skin the minute you cross your legs due to wearing short socks (unfortunately, most socks sold locally falls in this category).
Cheers!

if u find any classic or Tramezza models of SF with goodyear welting that has reasonable pricing, they are definitely worth a look.

I google around but cant see much info on their gazette loafer shoes.. Is it gazette consider one of SF classic and Goodyear welding?

not welding. welting.
if u're talking abt their horse bit loafers, the ones from the Tramezza line are goodyear welted.

hi all, thought of getting some opinion in here. My clarks shoes (black plain, leather loafer) had sole broken, so together with this rainy seasons, socks had been drenched with water few times. Has been a regular clarks man, having very limited shoe knowledge. Thinking of getting new shoes.
Just a rough guide, am looking for this kind of shoe, some call em loafer:
some criterias, but not strictly; rubber sole, flat if possible, some lace / or buckle to make more em.. expensive looking.
would appreacite any feedback at all.
dont mind ordering from oversea though, if reputable site.
hoping to walk in 2013 with healthy, clean and dry feet.
thanks and regards.

just a note, loafers are slip-ons hence they don't really need unnecessary embellishments such as laces (on derbies or oxfords) or buckles (which you find on monks).

What are your opinions on AEs and Aldens compared to the European bench grade counterparts within the same price bracket?
imho, one has to compare it directly with specific brands. it's tough for them to be compared with C&J as the latter is well known to have exceptional leather quality. i've even seen many loakes that really impressed with their price points. i think, for many of these brands, u can't really go wrong. sure, there are plenty of comparisons online but alas, unless u travel a lot, it's gonna be really tough (unless u want the trouble of buying online - i always like to try my shoes before buying) to buy from both sides of the atlantic.
ultimately, again imho, if u can find any one with a great deal and good price, then whack only lah hahaha. in malaysia, we only have plal and maybe ed et al across the causeway for our options. got discount, got good deals, got the look we like - i just hentam lor.

Easy for Terrence to travel leh....
Terrence,
Have you seen anything good in Japan for their local brand?
Looking for maybe a casual suede shoe/leather that i can wear with and without socks.
Dont mind seconds as long as the defect not really noticeable.
Any suggestions guys?

Some nice stuff there!
But i am on the same boat as lanatir.
I prefer to try on a shoe. I have wide feet and in my early days no matter how much research i did, it was only a 50% success rate.
This is something i would be interested in as a casual shoe.

Dear all shoes sifu and master,
I'm totally new in the shoes world of man, all I know is only those common brand like Clarks, Rockport and etc.
I'm curious why nobody mentioned those designer brand like Gucci and Ferragamo? no good?
For easy understanding, as opposed to watches what shoes brand should I look into when choosing a good pair of shoes?
1) Patek or Lange = ?
2) JLC or AP = ?
3) Rolex = ?
4) Omega = ?
5) Tag = ?
6) Seiko = ?
I suppose those Hush Puppies fall into the category of Seiko?

Here's a quick guide .
1) Patek or Lange = John Lobb , Vass , Edward Green
2) JLC or AP = Crockett & Jones Handgrade
3) Rolex = Church
4) Omega = Cheaney
5) Tag = Not sure , probably 70% of the italian shoes
6) Seiko = maybe Zara?
Hush Puppies , Obermain etc seems like a mass produced OEM from China . They all look the same.

thanks gapnap

But then, where do you put other smaller bespoke makers?
Anyway we are too brainwashed by Americans and their craze for statistics. For me it's always a price to quality ratio.
-
Nothing spectacular but just picked up something bright for this years late summer.
I find these American made shoes are quite substantial and holds up well to the amount walking that I do. Trust me, when I say I walk, I do mean I walk a lot! On a bright summer day, I can walk for 12-15 hours fueled with caffeine and chicken over rice.
Nothing fancy, but so far holding up pretty well. Looks great with khakis, jeans and a linen jacket.
Sorry for the crappy phone photos.

AE is just further down on the same street towards union sq in SF.
On the opposite end, there's Cable Car Clothiers and also The Hound Clothiers. American trad haberdashers. Worth a visit.
On my last visit, saw a group of Japanese buying a few pair each in Aldens.

yeah ridgeway, the black and red stitching looks enticing too... figured that a rubber lined sole would last me till late autumn.
No more sneakers for me except canvas, Vans or Converse. they just do not last and me getting old.
Those Vass are beautiful. But how would it hold up with the usual mileage I clock up? I always wanted to get a pair of these Euro shoes. But somehow they looks too exquisite and dainty. Scared that it may not hold out as well as their counterparts across the pond.
what's ur take?
-
the vass is new, so i cant comment yet, will let u know in few month time

u don't need to wait till resole. the vibram or continental rubber layer is placed onto the leather sole.

But then, where do you put other smaller bespoke makers?
Well , there's always RM , debethune , MB&F , FP Journe , Kari Voutilainen etc..

All this shoe talk and Terrence AE wingtip that "are quite substantial and holds up well to the amount walking that I do. Trust me, when I say I walk, I do mean I walk a lot! On a bright summer day, I can walk for 12-15 hours fueled with caffeine and chicken over rice" have finally piqued my interests.
I have zero knowledge currently on high end shoes but will slowly learn.
1st question of the day is regarding the "last"
Say if company A have a 5-65 last, will company B have the same last as well?
-
i totally forgot about them
this thing built like tank and with commando sole it is super heavy but definitely can take abuse

Bench grade Loake 1880 from Plal's.
Quite decent quality for the price but I still feel it is still a few shades off when compared to Allen Edmonds Strand at this price bracket.
But still way better than any popular mall brand shoes.

Breaking in these.
I love the style.
With white office light it seems more green than it is.
But in actual fact its a VERY dark shade of green where normally it looks black.

Mind to share where can i buy Allen Edmonds in malaysia? or need to order online...?
I don't think it's available in Malaysia.
Ordering online is super pricey.
They recently outsourced shipping to a 3rd party company and the cost of sending a shoe over to malaysia is equivalent to another pair of shoes.
Print out the sizing chart from the AE website and see if your feet fits the standard sizes.
If your foot width is D, then ebay is a good bet since they mostly have D width in all sizes.
If your feet is narrow or wide at E or EEE, then your only choice is to order from AE direct since they have the full range of sizes available.
Hope that helps.
-
Online bro. Dont think they have any dealers here.

thanks bro ! . i don't normally buy shoes until i have tried the size & fitting..furthermore AE it is not cheap!

Just wondering - am a shoe lover as well - if I noticed, these are "carpet-to-carpet" shoes right?
Do you actually go to the cobbler and do you add in rubber sole for your shoes? Would like to own these shoes, but wooden base soles, seems not suitable for me.

Parkson Pavillion - Church. Thats about it.

From what I have gathered, it seems like Bexley has the best quality to price ratio shoe trees. I am planning to make a purchase with at least 4 pairs. I want 2 pairs myself. 4 pairs at €97.50 which shipping is included. That is €24.38 per pair. If we buy more than 4 pairs, then, the price per pair will get cheaper as the difference in shipping cost is very little.
Is anyone interested?

Sorry but I've always wondered, are those shops along Jalan Gasing any good? Or just hearsay? Which one to visit?
Custom made?
-
East Dane has a very silly policy which doesn't allow me order more than 2 of the same size shoe tree on their website. Therefore, I will be ordering from Bexley at around the same price. One pair is available for anyone who is interested.

I have placed order for the shoe trees.

Do all of them fit nicely?

fortunately yes.. except for the bruno which is a bit larger so i wear thicker socks..
i know my bally sizes so that helps.
the hugo boss was a pair of moccassins.. so i had some leeway there

You wouldn't go wrong with any of the brands mentioned by ivan..... Personally, i started off with two Loakes bought from Plal, then accumulated nearly a dozen of dress shoes over the years..... Mostly Ballys and English shoes.... >5 Ballys, 3 Church's and a Handgrade Crockett & Jones... All of my dress shoes except for one have one thing in common, ie. Goodyear welted.... Imho, none of the Ballys or Church's that i owned can match the craftsmanship and the leather quality of the Handgrade C&J...
I've tried JL and EG, they are of course better quality then the Handgrade CJ or the Church's, but i feel at the price of more than 5k - almost doubled the price, i find it very hard to comprehend - a point of diminishing return!
And, Church's has been expanding their line of late after Prada's takeover..... So u have more choices nowadays and not just the 'uncle' collection.... That said, that's one of the main reason why most of the shoe snob hate Church's these days....for the fear that they are becoming more of a fashion brand instead of a pure shoemaker!
-
sorry noob questions, how do differentiate CJ Benchgrade vs Handgrade?
-
sorry noob questions, how do differentiate CJ Benchgrade vs Handgrade?
Not an expert but i will attempt to answer your question.
Of course, there are differences in leather quality and stitching, etc but generally, the easiest way to differentiate between these two grades would be by looking at its sole.
The first two pictures are handgrade. You would notice that the sole is tanned with darker colour and you would not see any stitching on handgrade's sole....
The other obvious difference would be the stamping/logo used inside the shoe.
The left logo is used for the benchgrade line (in gold) while the right logo is used for the handgrade line...(indented on the shoe in-sole - without any colour)

Lobb is always the best !!
-
Lobb is always the best !!
Depends on one's perspectives.
I disagree, but not entirely. Lobb is one of the best - I agree but not always the best! Too many variables to consider when it comes to RTW market - suitability of lasts with your feet, etc. Now we are blessed and spoilt with choices in the RTW market - the likes of John Lobb of course, Ed green, Cleverly, JM Weston, Aubercy, Corthay, Berluti, Saint Crispins, Stefano Bemer and many others! It's like saying Rolls Royce is always the best or Rolex is always the best! A fallacy at its best.
Bespoke is always the best if one could afford it. Even bespoke crockett jones cost much more than RTW Lobb or any other RTW for that matter - but not a fair comparison obviously! And, shoes from Japanese makers are really good quality - at par or at times better than the European rivals!
-
Sport planet is at USJ City mall!!! must go get a nice sport shoe

afaik, there is no longer any Alfred Sargent Classic. AS now has only two lines, namely AS Exclusive and AS Handgrade.
Loake has another range above Loake 1880 which is Loake 1880 Export Grade.
