Suggestion for a daily use watch
« on: October 16, 2015, 10:13:34 AM »
Hi All

I have been using my faithful tag heuer carrera for about 8 years now (only went through an overhaul once) and just 2 years ago bought a zenith captain winsor annual calendar.

Am now itching to buy another watch to replace the tag which means every day use watch, bracelet, can withstand a little bashing here and there (esp having to chase around a 2 year old).

The most obvious choice to me was a rolex, the sub and gmtii. However i have tried both on my wrist and it looks a little small (i believe eventhough its 1mm smaller than the tag, the tag is way thicker and heavier (and i quite like that feel).

Apart from that i like the iwcs and panerais (but they are all leather strapped and the panerai looks a little ugly with a bracelet).

Any suggestions? The budget i guess would be up to rm30k thereabouts (subject to the missus approval).

I think 30k might b a little ambitious haha (because thats how much a GMTII cost)

Like i said the rolexes seem a little small on the wrist - i thought the gmtII would wear bigger than the sub but it seems like both are quite tiny

but the idea of a tudor sounds intriguing. in fact the blue pelagos looks like something i want to check out on the weekend!

If you think 40mm models are small how about the Explorer2? 42mm with polar/black dial (though I favor the polar version).

Hi you could try the rolex sd c
I too had the same delimma ealier as you with the subc and gmt and end up with the sdc last year after survey and try out

The sdc will sit higher as it was ticker

At that price, go for sub LV or GMTII, sdc is also okay but i doubt you can get it at 30k, esp after the recent price increase

Thanks for the suggestions!

The hulk looks really good on pictures but I find it funny that I would need to b put on a waiting list and when I get to see the watch is when I need to decide to buy it literally on the spot.

Explorer ii 42mm is definitely a better size but I guess it wasnt my cup of tea

The sea dweller I tried on and did like it better vs the sub but the price was 38k!

So in a somewhat impulse buy I decided to go with a Tudor Pelagos in blue and given it was in the teens (price wise), hopefully I can relook into the rolexes in the near future.

Will need to figure how to post pics.

Get a second hand subC even though it's smaller it is:
1) good value retention - won't lose much if you decide to sell later down the track
2) versatile, robust, classic and iconic. Perfect for Daily wear.
3) ceramic bezel and brushed bracelet - this watch will always look new. It is hard to see the scratches on the brushed bracelet. And the bezel always shiny and resistant to scratch. Mine is a 2011 model and still looks good.
4) if your spending around 25k ringgit there r not many watches out there that can beat a Rolex sub.
5) glide lock clasp

Overall a solid daily wear and second to none in that 30k rm budget range.

My Omega Seamaster have been a reliable workhorse for the past 8 years. Was thinking of flipping it but after the service 3 years ago, it looked brand new and decided to just keep it as it's very practical and can endure the daily bashings.

The brietling brings back memories when I was eyeing many years back but again a watch that I would very much prefer in leather strap.

Yes incl gst. That's retail price I believe. I saw the batman gmt online that day and I was shocked at the premium price of 40k!

IMHO...a workhorse needs to be sporty,  can stand the beating and with date. Any dive watch makes a good daily use.
