Lol, we ended up watching Bambi :p No, I'm not 10-years old, but she hadn't watched it before and I felt nostalgic :p

Mate, I hate to say this, but you must be madly in love with your GF. :D

Haha, she's a great girl. But I probably wanted to watch it more than her :p So she's probably doing it for me :p Watch Rapunzel last week and felt that it lost some of that Disney magic, so I wanted to watch the classics again to confirm that.

My 3s:

1) Citizen Kane - Orson Welles extensive use of foreground and background in staging and cinematography. Prior to this framing in Hollywood movies are only foreground where the backgrounds are not in focus. Perfect lighting to create carefully placed shadows to accentuate subjects anonymity, atmosphere and ambience. One of my favourite scene is the angle used in the image projected from broken glasses. These are groundbreaking filming from geniuses like Orson Welles and Greg Toland.

Bro, when I started my movie-loving passion, I have always been puzzled as to why Citizen Kane is always in the top tier (most of the time at no. 1 or at least in the top 3) of the greatest movies of all time. Being made in 1941 caused the film more difficult to find and watch, until I managed to find one a few years ago. Well, what can I say ...

Granted, the movie was more often than not glorified for its innovative cinematography, music and narrative structure, plus the unorthodox story telling technique. All in all, Welles made groundbreaking breakthrough in so many areas, that almost all film critics held it as the greatest film of all time. But great it might be, I could only bring myself to watch it once. I guess what is missing or lacking (at least in my case), as opposed to film like Casablanca or Godfather, is a great story. I mean, others might find it great, but the life story of a media magnate doesn't cut it with me. Maybe it's because I'm not so technically inclined, so to speak, as compared to my keenness in a great story. So yes, even though it's not my best, I would fully understand why it's ranked as the best by others.

Hi Manburg,

Contact is a pretty cool movie as well. I like it as I am into Sci-fi movies. Makes you think. I like Event Horizon, but I guess many do not. But I am more into comedy or silly movies like Dirty Rotten Scoundrel, A Fish Called Wanda, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, most if not all Peter Seller movies, more so Dr. Strangelove. What about the movie Casino Royale? No, not the one with the new Bond, but the one where just about eveyone is Bond. Got to love Jimmy Bond.

I also like most movies by Kubrick and Scott, but more Kubrick. I especially like Clockwork Orange. I am also into Tarantino, love his From Dusk Till Dawn. Of course other movies I enjoy and can watch over and over again includes The Shawshank Redemption, Dune (yes even if it is crappy), Space Ball The Movie (yes I love Mel Brooks). I think there are just too many movies that I like. Hell I even love the Carry On series and the Confessions series. Not to forget the the Monty Python movies. I even like the movies like Dogma, Mallrats, Tremors and Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.

Of course one of my all time fav movie is Executive Decision. Why? Cause Steven Seagal dies about 10 minutes in (flame suit on).

As for the Star Wars movies, I only like part 4, 5 and 6. Never watch parts 1, 2 and 3 cause I don't really want to know how Vader became what he is. I was a small boy when I saw Star Wars 4, and seeing Vader for the first time was just awesome. I mean really, he became Vader because he was confused? Come on, he is the baddest bad guy in the Sci-fi universe.

Hobbit,

I've seen Event Horizon ... pretty hair-raising! :o Ha ha ha. So where do you think they've been - Hell or some other universes?

Talking about Peter Sellers, I've just watched Dr. Strangelove last week for the umpteenth time. What a talent this Sellers! Some critics heralded Dr. Stranglove as the best black comedy of all time. I've also seen that "other' Casino Royale. It's like watching Austin Powers! :Laughing_on_floor:

I'm also a fan of Kubrick, and have seen quite a number of his flims - Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Clockwork Orange (got a DVD, but haven't seen it), Barry Lyndon, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut (Kubrick might be wearing his sex-maniac hat when making this movie)  :Dancing_banana:

Some of my friends regard Shawshank Redemption as their best film. I guess it's because it teaches us about true friendship. I'm also a fan of Dune, though as you said, the quality is like shit! Reason of my love for this movie? The PC game Dune ... ha ha!! For Spaceballs, well ... any SW fan would definitely love it. I watched it in a cinema! The best scene? When the baddies captured Hans and Co. only to find out that they've actually got their stuntmen instead (Leia with beard!) :Laughing_on_floor:

That Executive Decision, I couldn't believe my eyes when I thought I saw Seagal's head being blown off. ??? I mean, he's like ada ilmu kebal in all his other movies, and suddenly here we got our wish in what, not even a quarter of the movie? Ha ha ha ... that should qualify as a Seagal classic.

The common response for many is "wtf is this movie laa??"

Yes, that's absolutely correct. I would also say the same had I not been a movie buff.

The only Star Wars that matter is 4,5 and 6. I watched the original in 1977 at Rex Theater haha, dah tua beb

Ha ha ha .... now we know who the oldest guy here is! :Dancing_banana: I think you and Hobbit could compete for that honour. :Laughing_on_floor:

My personal favorite movies (not necessary best and not in particular order) are:

  • Lord of the Rings
  • Cinema Paradiso
  • To Kill a Mocking Bird
  • Star Wars
  • Life is Beautiful (La vita è bella)
  • Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

I second the LOTR trilogy, which I think is one of the greatest ground breakers in cinematic history. Funny how no one ever mentioned Titanic. ???

I've long known the beauty of Cinema Paradiso (got a DVD copy), but never managed to get myself going through it. Life is Beautiful is, well ... another beautiful Italian movie. Having a small boy of my own makes the identification with the movie very easy. It's a sad film actually, one that's tugging at your heart mercilessly. Tangkap leleh ... :'(

i agree. LOTR is ground breaking. frankly, with this release WETA surpassed ILM for visual effects and brought it up a notch. have always been a fan of peter jackson cult films like bad taste and dead alive. cult films are low budget, fun movie, funny one-liner and hilarious plot. anyone here into cult films? titanic is a geat movie and love what jimmy did for the steam engine scenes. it is gargantuan!

yeah cinema paradiso, life is beautiful, legend 1900, etc always got me misty eyes. speaking of italian directors, dario argento is the maestro of cult films!

mate, it doesn't matter how you rank them. if your favourite cuppa is teh tarik and not teh halia or teh o nipis. then teh tarik it is. after all, they all originate from tea. they are all great films from great directors.

I reckon you've got a bluray then? Where did you source all your movies? I bought everything when I was in the UK -they're dirt cheap! One can get numerous bluray titles (except those that are just released) for sub 10 pounds. Not too sure what the price here is.

Well, I've discovered that they are now not as expensive as before. I saw some best buys at RM80 (previously the cheapest would be RM150).

By the way, these are my modest blu ray collections:

I forgot to include my blu ray boxset of the Bourne trilogy. One of the best around. I dare to say that the never-seen-before hand to hand combat in a Bond film suddenly appearing in the Casino Royale was inspired by the Bourne films.

But never heard of The Boondock Saints. Must be one of the those films with limited screenings but has cult followings.

Just watched Inception last weekend, and couldn't help but notice the in-your-face placement of watches in a few scenes, the most obvious of which was when Cobb looked at his Swiss Made piece upside down. Though the brand name is not shown, it's apparent that he's wearing this watch:

WV211B.BA0787

WATCH-ID.com stated:

Leonardo DiCaprio wears a TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic in the movie Inception. The words "swiss made" and "automatic" on the dial and part of the black dial of the watch can be seen in a close up shot in one of the first scenes in the film. It's no suprise Leonardo wears a TAG Heuer: he's one of the brand ambassadors of the brand and can be spotted in some advertisements.

The exact model used in the film is the TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic WV211B.BA0787 with steel case, steel bracelet and black dial. The watch has a Calibre 5 automatic movement, date window at 3 o'clock and luminous, diamond shaped hands.

On several premieres of Inception (in London and Tokyo for example), DiCaprio wore a TAG Heuer Carrera Automatic Chronograph Tachymetre with leather strap (CV2016.FC6205).
