:Blue:Helo member! I just registered as a new member about 10 minutes ago. Need advice from all the situ here. I have my eye on this white dial explorer 2 rolex in Johor bahru. Is it a worthwhile investment? Currently I own an old white gold oyster date which the shop has offered [do not discuss price here] for it, whether I buy the explorer or not. It's not part of a trade in. The explorer go for more than [pls pm to discuss price]. Any advice?

IMO, watches are not worthwhile investment. Just like cars, one buy a car at RM XXX price but after some time the value drops like "a bird without wings".
Some watches may have certain value as the year goes by, especially Roleks. This, IMO, is because the company increases its prices every year, hence the pre-owned market also adapt to the situation.
Coming back to your question, is it worthwhile to get the Explorer II? IMO, if the watch "sings to you", ie you feel like "must have" that Explorer II )within your budget), then why not get it.
As for trading in your white gold oyster date, does this piece still has a place in yoour heart? If it does, keep it. If not, sell it or trade it for another watch that you feel like "must have".
(Note: I do not discuss price here, as to me the prices can be compared with friends, other pre-owned watch dealers etc)

any rolex sport model is worth to invest. no further question ask...go ahead
-
I'm no expert/sifu in pre-owned Rolex, but IMHO the value of a pre-owned timepiece depends on multiple factors such as condition (serviced regularly?, scratches?, dings?, polished case?), age ( the watch serial number can help determine the year of production) and dial color.
It is difficult to provide any advice without having seen the watch. I would suggest that you search the internet for current asking prices for this particular model so as to get a better idea of its value. If I recall correctly there are a few EXP2 being offered for sale here so you can also try searching MWF's "For Sale" board for more information.

If you plan to buy and keep it in the Safe, then no point getting it. If you are tried to get the best deal, then it will be very much depend on the conditions as advised by other members. Just hunt around until you find a deal that you cant resist, that will be  deal.

Watches are to be used. Having said that, the wear and tear does affect prices whether you like it or not.....think of it as the cost of enjoyment!
-
Thank u for all the advice. I guess it boils down to oneself to really examine the value of the watches and make up his own mind. However, others advice are much appreciated. I am still thinking about buying but need a few more days to come to the final decision. Actually we can't put a price tag on something priceless right?

dont buy watch as investment. You will lose money.

excelent

1. don't buy a watch as an investment item, meaning you expect it to increase in value or at least maintain it. buy it to wear for personal enjoyment.
2. before buying a watch, do your homework on the price especially for a used watch.
-
Thank you for the advice. I don't mean to buy it for investment. I would like to to have it for self satisfaction, not for time tracking device. Anyway, those explorer 2 posted on the for sale board is either sold as such don't know the price or out of my price range.
-
agreed above, if the watch do have a place in your heart, go for it.. watch is very personal taste..
-
I appreciate explorer II Rolex watches and i still kept it well. One of the ultimate vintage watch must keep.
-
go for it! i did.. no regrets. :)

Take your time, don't get pushed into a purchase. Learn as much as possible.
Also, is that shop reputable?

Remember one more thing. Cheap things doesn't come good.
If the deal is too attractive to resist, walk away....
my 2 cents

the car analogy for watch is correct, it bound to depreciate.
the correct comparision in malaysian context is Rolex is like toyota good secondhand value, whereelse some other watches is like citroen.
-
Rolex is the name in watches, if something will make you regret in future, it will never be a Rolex...
the only work you have to do before bring it home, is do some research on web, and forums discussing it, you will get many valuable opinion but after all, you have to make your own decision.
I am planning to get an Omega, but am ow looking for either a Rolex Exp 2, or Sub, both are great watches but just a matter of, I can only get one at a time..
So Bro, kindly share everything about your watches with us and we all will "support" you as a new member of the Families..
Kanpatei!!

I bought a pre owned Explorer II lately. I am lucky that it comes with full set documents including the original Rolex receipt.
The price in 2010 after discount is RM 18.8 k. Then this watch sold to me in 2016 for RM 16k.
So we take the reduced value of RM 2.8k then divided by 6 yrs. The previous owner just spent not enough RM40per month to enjoy the watch .
I think it's worth it.

I think likely most of the watches are like fiat or Citroen ... Only a few specific models is like Toyota

Watch as an investment is a big no no! Unless u can get it at a very good price i mean below pre owned market price..then perhaps i call that a good deal..but if u wanna buy the Explorer 2 because u really like the model..then just pull the trigger on it

IMHO, Don't go overboard about getting the 'best' deal. A branded watch is a luxury item. It is like diamonds, very difficult to get good second-hand value once cut and set. If the second hand value is an issue, you shouldn't buy it in the first place.

almost 6yrs, my 16570 served me well, and i parted it on 24-dec-2021 to trade in the new 126710blnr GMT Master II.
its trade-in value is RM33k.
i revived this thread just to honour my dearest 16570, it got 3186 calibre and tiptop accuracy and nonpolished case and bracelet.
i am here to say " Thank you" to my 16570 3186 movement explorer II!

Explorer II is a good watch, worth having, if one can afford it. If buying the watch makes one better off mentally, then it may worth the effort. Expecting it to make a profit after some years, may not be wise.
-
If you like it and money not an issue go buy it.I have collected watches for a long time mostly to wear and appreciate it.
I have never thought of it as an investment. But fortunately through the years the prices of watches i acquired generally have gone up.
Rolex especially the SS sports model have all gone up in value. And of course i acquired some LEMONS too....panerai...frank muller.Even though these LEMONS have depreciated greatly i still enjoy wearing them'
My rolexes i have 13 of them( All SS sports and ONE two tone Date just).Just some reference for invesment point of view...
Explorer polar dial 16570 purchase at 12K RM ...today easily 35 to 40k RM
SS Daytona 16520 paid 14K USD today easily 30K USD
SS Daytona 116520 ,grey market paid 11k USD today 25K USD
The LEMONS some of which i lost half it s value like Panerai PAM 190 JLC movement, paid 11K USD during the hype ,now maybe 6K.So you win some and lose some.
The watches were acquired from grey market and many from AD ,since there were no waiting list those years ago.Presently the issue is whether you can get one from the AD,which seems impossible or buy from grey market at a gretly inflated price.I have come to a point where i m thinking of getting rid of my entire collection, putting up for sale as i have made quite a bit.
So buy it if you like it and wear it,enjoy it and hopefully you make some money from it
