i believe many malaysian now like lui char..... because of promotion by those organic shops.... n through aunties!
But i believe many shop, especially those organic shop that sell hakka lui char do not know about hakka lui char
basically, the history of lui char can trace back to thousand yrs.... many version of story, but it exist since long long time in the southern part of china.
different area serve different type of lui char as well...
in malaysia, most of the lui char brought by our ancestor from jie xi, like - hor po, hoy fung, luk fung, hoy luk fung, etc
hence the lui char is quite similar, if you go other part in china and taiwan, the lui char is very much different!
2 main versions in all
1st version - this is what we all use to,
green tea + some fried green leaves + sesame + peanut + salt - all crushed using the tradisional tools + boiling water
serve with various type of fried vege that cut into small pieces + coy pu + peanut + fried hard yellow tofu + pop rice/fried sun dried glutinouse rice/ oily garlic rice
2nd version - this is hardly seen in malaysia
green tea + many beans + rices/pop rice + salt + veges + peanut + sesame- crushed + sugar + boiling water
serve like thick soup
i tasted this in taiwan and saw it in other part in china
in Klang Valley, i use to go to a few restaurants near ampang to have this authentic lui char last time.... now dunno whether they still selling!

I like Lui Char also... but not easy to find a good one ;)
Love on in Kota Damansara but recently went back try again...not as nice as i first having it... maybe business too good and quality drop? Anyway, please recommend some ;)

There is one really good authentic hakka lui char at Kota Kinabalu.
Near Taman Cantek (yes, thats how it's spelled :P )
And, I actually dunno what lui char is good for... I only know what my old man told me...
Constipation and indigestion? Lui Char is a good thing to eat... it's like a natural colon cleaner.
It might sound gross, but everytime after I eat lui char... I tend to crap easier... :Startled:

I was conned to eat this dish when i was 6 years old. Trust me, a kid's memory goes a looooong way.

There is a good lui char restuarant at the KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall along the jalan Maharajalela (Kampong Attap). No harm trying.

this is normally how I had my lui char nowadays
lunch during weekends, my mum will me this
Rice/brown rice, i will mix it with choy bu n or peanut
then eat that with 2-3 types of fried vege with garlic n or dried shrimp
n or fried hard tofu
then drink with the salted tea!!! We call hum char actually instead of lui chai

modified, the soup is too clear, taste enhanced with luxury setting .... good for beginner...
lack of the raw kik.... eating a set meal will nvr give u the kik for lui char....
best is home cook, the tea leave and other ingredients must be "LUI" gao gao.... the salty tea made this way will taste differently.... most modern kitchen prepare this with blender, the soup is clear and no taste....
and eat with neighbors / frens....
then eat as many vege as u like... drink the hot hot lui cha with big bowl till u sweat....
its kinda lifestyle/culture/way of living v all missing in the city....
u see, when i drink a lui cha in a wax paper cup in taiwan.... i dont have the feeling of enjoying the lui cha... pure fun to know and try other type of lui cha....

Jet78: Ngai he hakka yin! Bro, i know you but i'm not sure you recognized me or not. We used to meet several time in fast lane, kakaka.
Personally, i did not really enjoy lui cha last time because of the mint tea.......it's like stuffing toothpaste into my mouth..... :Confused:
But i do enjoy now ever since i tried the lui cha in Kepong, Taman Bukit Maluri. The stall is just next to the "famous" dim sum restaurant, in front of 7 eleven. I do not know whether it's suit to your taste, but it taste good to me.....

There's this coffee shop in paramount garden PJ, which sells lui char. The name of the coffee shop is called Millenium 88 that sells Hokkien mee as well. Open during lunch time, havent been there at night.
