Torn between a Rolex and a Tudor
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:50:36 AM »
Hi

Recently, I had an option to purchase a 16014 (circa 1984) Rolex Datejust and a brand new Tudor Day / Date.
Both watches have the same price tag, approx, (5.5-6k)

Which one would you buy?...a 20 years old watch or a brand new watch?. Is the Brand name so important (individual choice).

What say you?. Your thought please.

DC
I am almost a recovered watchaholic, but last checked shows only 70% recovered. How?

i'll say it depend on purpose of buying,  to wear or to keep?

to wear then better buy the design
and then buy new tudor due to accuracy and less problem
unless the rolex is really well kept

to keep then see if the rolex with all boxes and papers and what is the market price for both.... some analysis on price....

I think Rolex is a good choice, good resale value. The design of Rolex is always evergreen, yet i think datejust is one of the flagship of Rolex. I will go for old Rolex because of its high demand and the values keep appreciating!! I own a 20 yrs old Rolex which I bought for 15k. Now it's around 30k!!! (I am not a supporter of Rolex in fact) Movement wise, Rolex is chrono based, i dun think there will any precision problem. Tudor is not really my cup of tea... to be frank!
DC. if the condition of the Rolex is good. then go for it.

Design to me is important but i feel  a good watch should have their own identity backed by their maker's history.I always look into the flagship of the brand. Example: Rolex is commercially produce but because of it OWN identity, it can maintain its value either new or old. When you look at a Rolex...... the design is distinctively Rolex. (This is my view on good watch and i am not a fan of Rolex!)

Come on David we all know you still favor the Rolex above all else hahaha ;D

You will regret if you dont get the 16014.

I would wait to get the Tudor used and let someone else take the initial hit.
