This is my first post here.
It boosts confidence wearing a luxury watch, that's my opinion. I do find that people do sometimes wear a watch that didn't compliment his personality. That's what brand ambassador is for, profile matching.
-
good question deserve a good answer, to me i would look at watch as a man's only jewelry to wear, it shows your taste, your personality, your characteristic, and sometimes your status... well that's what a watch does for the appearance if you ask me, but not everyone is a watch person and they might not know or care what watch we wear, and fake watches is around, only a watch person would notice and appreciate it, or may start a conversation with us on it and become friend eventually
for a more meaningful reason, i love watches, i appreciate fine watch-making, i enjoy looking through the exhibition caseback at the beautifully made movement, also, i enjoy wearing a piece of history on my wrist, as every watch of mine was purchased for a special reason, and there's always a great story to tell

Your absolutely right about the only jewelry that men wear. My rich friend is quick to spot luxurious handbag to gauge her social standing.
My other friend went to an AD to buy a watch, he wasn't dressed decent enough to get the saleswoman service. Sad story.
In a big city, your watch is the gauge. Can't blame them but the market is flooded with fake watches, hard to tell. Fake watches are not cool, I rather don't wear to avoid being pretentious.
I appreciate watching fine watches, a world apart than normal watches. The feel is really different.

Same as you guys, watch is men’s jewellery but I am not into the history of the watches like most of guys do. Neither I care about the movement of the watches but it has to be automatic, not quartz.
I also have no specific brands favourite. I own some Tag Heuer, Omega, Ball, Rado, Tissot and a few other brands fall in this category. Rolex is still beyond my reach at the moment. This is not luxury watches like those AP, PP but ‘luxury-enough’ for middle person like me.
I currently crazy of limited edition of Seiko Prospex watches. They are cheap and good looking watches.
I will buy watches based on the design itself and of course, how deep my pocket is at the point of buying.
-
I perceived most guys have a collective appreciation and desire of finely made things from brands commonly recognizable for various adjectives such as historical element, good taste, classy, elegance etc.
-
"Why do people buy luxury watches?"
Because that people can afford to buy luxury watches! :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Because they can
-
to ensure the watchmakers can earn a living and bring food to their family
-
I think the answer should be the same as why man always pursuit for better car. It’s handbag for man.
-
It's also a great non-verbal way to project who you are as a person, and it's a good icebreaker when you meet someone who has similar tastes.
Of course, it does work as an ego boost as well. And I do agree with you, not everybody can carry certain brands. Like, I won't take an 'ah beng' seriously if he wears a Rolex, but he'd definitely look more interesting if he wore a Tudor.
-
Wearing a luxury watch is telling his net worth. I'm sure you'll get special "treatment" because eople sees the world that way.
-
Because peoplw loves luxury watches
Or some people hobby like me
I has saw a guy collection with 4 Rolex submariner 16610
-
can show face :Laughing_on_floor:

Could be take it as a personal achievement, appreciation of craft works, status symbol factor etc.
-
My friend bought a Rolex Daytona to impress girls. It worked cause he now has a girlfriend. Then he stopped wearing the watch LOL.

Thats a very good answer. To me, i think people wear Luxury watches because of the love they have for it. I wear Luxury watches because i'm addicted to it and i grew up with the love of watches in my heart.

The history and style behind the brand you are trying to show on your wrists. Not so much for showing off for me as Grand Seikos, not many people know about it but when you wear it, it shows that you know about the history of the Grand Seiko and about their movement. That's one example. Another reason why people buy luxury watches is because let's face it, as guys, we have only one prominent jewellery we wear that is the watch which is usually a statement piece. A watch has more personality and would give more personality as compared to a necklace or something like a band etc.
-
In my opinion there could be numerous reason :-
1) To impress your colleague
2) To impress girls (if you're a male)
3) To impress your gf(if you're a male)
4) To impress your mother in law
5) To show to others you're there
6) To reward yourself
7) Too much money on hand. Don't now what else to buy beside watches :Laughing_on_floor:
8) Not sure, just like expensive watch, the more the better
The questions is perhaps, which one you are :-)
-
I don’t know why people tend to complicate this simple hobby. It’s very simple, it’s to please someone, either someone is oneself or anyone other than oneself. End of story.

to me, its just a personal interest. for example:
mr. A drives benz C200 wears a gshock.
mr. B drives honda jazz wears a submariner.
theres no right or wrong. :o

Not really. I have seen people spending 6 or 7 months of his salry to buy a watch :Blue: :Blue:
-
It depends what you mean for luxury watches... because there are many famous brands like Gucci i.e. selling watches at very high price passing off them for luxury. But the quality is not comparable to the price. :-\
However I think that who can allow himselves to spend lots of money it's to show off his/her status symbol. 8)
-
We always need to spend money of things we like, be it cars, watches, handbags and so forth. If we don't, we will go crazy from working stress. Hahaha. At least that is the excuse I gave myself when I want to buy a watch.
-
I'm a watch lover and every watch of mine has memories! :Praying:
-
Because it shows the most out of people, it shows the person status symbol. You could wear a knock off looking rolex with a different brand and get still get compliments. But when you wear a Rolex, it shows that you've got extra cash to splash on yourself. It also goes on long term investment, if you buy a rolex now, most probably you could sell it higher or breakeven in the future.
-
I gravitate towards watches with certain complications and brand heritage. I marvel at the fact that a mechanical watch can keep the time and date for a century before needing an adjustment. It brings a smile to my face when I get to time my eggs or cup noodles using a chronograph and i cherish those rare moments where my flyback chronograph is useful.
I buy certain luxury watches because I identify with them. I believe every brand sells a story and their products reflect on the accuracy of that story. All in all I'm a watch wearer who appreciates fine watch-making and I believe there are many like me out there. I never intend to sell any of my watches unless it has to make space for a new watch I want to acquire. However it gives me comfort to know that the time pieces I purchase will stand the test of time and not depreciate too much if at all if kept long enough.

A majority of ladies do not know a lot of big brands (with the exception of ROLEX) :(
maybe only a handful does
I've encountered numerous times ladies asking a friend of mine wearing a Calatrava if it is DW LMAO

It is an investment and also definitely a boost to your image

and collectors or enthusiast
-
Lots of reasons.
Enthusiasm, Self imaging, Collectible, Built Quality, Resale value, Awesome level of attention to details.
Just so many reasons to enjoy a luxury watch, for me myself is in investment value. When u save up yr hard worked cash, luxury watches is an investment that u get to enjoy while not pain as much for the resale value as compare to other luxury products like branded, cars etc.
-
For me I bought one cause it definitely gives of this posh feeling. You could be all sporty and still wear a luxury watch and be classy. Also it really helps with all the university presentations and all when you dress up!
-
I love all mechanical things. When it comes to automatic movements, the swiss watch maker is the pinnacle of it.
Then, comes the heritage of the brand and along with that...the status.
-
It boost our self confidence when we have not much money buy wana act like one.. haha i think it represents our ownself
-
I got my first one as a reward for an achievement. Now I guess im just hooked lol. I mean they look nice. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
To each his own, but I buy them for my own self satisfaction.

When talking to my friend about fast cars, he aptly said, "yeah I guess it will be nice to get from stoplight to another faster". It is such a persistent memory because its embarrassingly true. Driving through KL there are plenty of people with 500hp+ cars, and none of them will ever get the full potential out of their cars because the law constrains such behaviour. So why do we buy nice watches? Pretty simple in my opinion, I absolutely adore design, functionality and history. Not everyone will appreciate it to this degree, but be humble and genuine if you are satisfying your watch habit for the sake of functional art, not to satisfy your ego, which is fine either way. I travel a lot and it sounds kinda sad, but a lot of the time my only companion is my watch, I hold it, I look at it and it reminds me of certain memories. MY beater watch, 97' tagheuer Kirium has this amazing ocean blue dial and polished accents, and that glimmer always reminds me of that feeling when I checked the time at the top of my crowning achievement, summiting Mt Killimanjaro in Tanzania Africa, the highest freestanding mountain in the world where the sky was clear as the sea and the snow was sparkling. Maybe my stories are a tad more romantic than others, but this is how I feel honestly, not to mention after meticulously studying people and their watches, I can more or less tell what kind of person they are. Good psychoprofilling haha.

I genuienly like the model and the mechanics behind the watch. And more than that, its something that i enjoy collecting. I love looking and appreciating the watches.
-
To me, it is the appreciation of hundreds of years of human ingenuity and hundreds of man hours that went into the mechanism and watch to make it work. Annual calender, perpetual, The ability to turn raw materials ( iron ore, gold ingots, sand, etc ) into beautiful and well crafted micro machines that can tell the time, date, moon phases, alarms, etc. The spinning balance wheel in each watch reminds me of my own heart beat, that myself and the watch is alive and ready to take on this world. Our mastery of time and machine. Don't get me started on the Tourbillon, dual rotors to cancel out errors, temperature compensation on spring and balance wheel. And how accurate mechanical chronometers is what allowed seafarers to sail the world centuries ago because it allowed longitude to be determined accurately long before the advent of GPS. In short, without those time keeping devices and the technologies to make it accurate, the world will be a much different place today, and a lot of those technologies are in the mechanical watches that we wear today.
When i first bought my sub, the main reason that caused me to part with the money is the mechanism. I fell in love with the mechanism. Then i learned about movement finishing, and started my foray and interest into German and independent brands. The finishing of Lange's balance cock, the beveling of Phillip Dufour watches, etc. The status part was and still secondary. Good to have, but not the main reason.
Most people also think of a BMW as a status symbol. But the E46/E90 generation is also tuned to be one of the best drivers car that will put a smile on the driver every time he/she takes a corner, the steering weight and feel, the 50-50 weight distribution, the way it pivots on your bottom, the smooth snarl of the NA inline 6 when you rev it to the red line, snap to the next gear and start the process all over.

why luxury watches? simple.. cause you can.
why sport cars, expensive shoes, expensive smart phones when a myvi, bata slippers, nokia 3210 suffice?
its all about choices and the feeling you get when you made the choice.

I second that!.. You can ask why because you just feel like it if you could afford it..we are all slave to something..one will not willing to spend 1 bucks extra for food but will die for a bag and so on

For me, luxury watches are like statement for people especially men
I think a man's taste can be determined from his shoes, belt, wallet, watch and of course the way he speaks
Luxury watch are not necessarily be a good watch, but a suitable luxury watch can be a good complement to a man
-
For me it's to own better / finer things. At some point we all have to stop wearing Winnie the Pooh watches ;)
-
of course to impress others, but mainly also to show that ur own hardworks pays off.
first thing first, even thought to show off, make sure the watch is wat u like
-
It’s kind of like “I made it”, but most importantly, you like watches to begin with.
-
A typical chinaman’a success story will always be a gold Rolex and a Benz. Probably people regard their specific luxury watches as success. Some want other people to notice them, or some just love watches like most of us.
Personally, a watch is the only accessory for a man to express his character, attitude, and style. I wouldn’t wear something I don’t like just to impress other people, you only have to impress yourself.

Not gonna lie. Some of my luxury watches I do buy because I just love it at first sight.
-
To me, growing up hearing about luxury watches such as Rolex, Patek, AP etc it felt like ever owning something so valuable would be unattainable.
Hence now some decades later finding that you do have the means to realize these previously unimaginable dreams makes me have to acquire them.
So I guess it's just following and realizing a long due dream =)

One of the reasons, among many, is to "syiok sendiri." ;D

It's a way to reward ourselves for the hard work and achievement.

loving watches is one and at the same time it reminds me of a milestone achieved when i look at the watch on my wrist
-
Owning a luxury watch is more a statement that you have arrived. Sort of a gift to self for achieving something in life. It is also a great way to meet people with the same interests as yourself. Unlike a car where there is a distinct difference between show-offs and true drivers. Do you buy a Ferrari and never tested the limits of it's abilities?
Having said that, check out the watches that the top ten richest guys in the world wear, they are more functional than bling!

IMO, a watch is a man's accessory. Like how a lady wears her necklace, brooch, earrings, bracelet/bangle.
It shows a status of a man too. Some guys may dress simply for that kopitiam breakfast or sundry shop run, but they have their luxury watch on them. From there you may be able to peek a little into what the man is.
My 2 cents. :Dancing_banana:
-
It show to people what level of u
-
Some people judge a man by the watch he wears. It's a symbol of status. People judge how smart, tasteful, attractive, and successful you are based on visual indicators.
-
here's what i think
- for men its a form a jewellery
- It's a passion for some
- It's a way to ensure that you have "bling" even when you leave your luxury car in the carpark
- to tell the time

Cheap watches do not a long time. You have to keep replacing them every few years. High end watches lasts generations. Ive given to my son my tag. My omega from 1998 still looks good. And of course the Rolex - timeless design.
-
To improve the economic develpoment!!!
hahaha... just kidding..
some they really like the watch, some is for hobby, some is for other people see only (Chinese we call it can lose money, cannot lose face mah)!!
-
For me, a watch is a love affair. Its either you love watches or you don't.
And like with every hobby you are always wanting a nicer and complicated watch.
Its always nice to wear a luxury watch on your wrist.
-
Same reason as why people buy other luxury goods like designer clothes, cars and jewellery - if they appreciate well made products and have earned sufficient income to afford these items, purchasing them will give them a sense of accomplishment, reward and prestige.
-
I started collecting luxury watches when I bought my first vintage manual wound rolex from my uncle
-
Luxury watches for men are a form of jewellery. While women have earrings, necklaces, etc, men traditionally only wear watches (anything other form of bling jewellery on a man in my opinion looks off). Having said that, i once read an article somewhere that 80% of the population can't tell at arms length if a watch is expensive or not.....and only a WIS could spot a luxury watch on the arm of another WIS! :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Some people like buying cars while others like watches. It’s that kind of analogy.
