Title: Panerai PAM372 47mm Luminor Base SIHH2011
Post by: dsiewmy on February 11, 2012, 12:12:16 PM
Been falling in love with the PAM372, which makes me want to share more about this wonderful and beautiful timepiece.
This is my first review ever, so please bear with me.

Introduction
The PAM372 is a SIHH2011 release model, much awaited as it was considered as the "fiddy base" which most ristis like myself were anxiously awaiting. (Fiddy is a slang reference to the PAM127).
A total of 3500 pcs will be made over a period of 2 years, which makes it a one time release limited production model (like the PAM366, PAM367 n etc.)

Most ristis like myself waited for this model for more than a year (order in early last year, only received recently).
Real bummer if you asked me...

What is in the package?[/b]
PAM372 is a 47mm high polished case, based on a vintage design ~ "transitional case".
This casestyle is different from previous pre-V and 1950 case.
This new transitional case makes it easier to wear than the previous 1950s.
"easier" in my case is for people with smaller wrist like mine (~6").
It looks huge but doesn't really wear that big, but still commands great wrist presence.

See photos for the differences in case style.
Bottom is pre-V case PAM390, middle is transitional case PAM372, top is 1950 case PAM359.

The most important factor of this watch, is the base pumpkin colored dial with its new gold hands.
I could just look at this all day  ;)

It also has a plexi which makes it so much fun to look at. Panerai has even thrown in an additional plexi-glass just in case! But no matter, as you may know, plexis are easy to maintain.

See photo for difference between plexi and crystal.

Back case on the other hand is see-thru crystal, so one can view the much more improved pam in-house movement p3000.

The crown guard on the PAM372 is just like the one on the 1950's.

What is in the package?[/b]
The 2 new OEM straps are much improved versions of the previous calf vintage and a brand new design.

Everything sounds great so far, one bit I don't really like is that box set which it comes with.
Although a very special timepiece and even limited in production, but it was not given a Special Edition status, hence no SE box. All the above has to be squeezed into the normal regular production box set (which in this case is tiny since there's so much to fit in).

Overall Build[/b]
With Panerai trying to go upmarket, the overall build quality of the 372 is much improved.
Everything looks find and dandy, all build solid; but comes at a high price.
The PAM372 is priced much higher than previous base models (based on retail price).

The new movement is a manual winding - P3000 which is much better to look at as compared to the previous ETA and P9000 calibres.
I'm not much of a movement guy, but this new movement does feel much smoother when winding and so far has been great. I have not been able to test the power reserve correctly, but manufacturer says it's a 3 day power reserve model.

Comparison with Other Models[/b]

here a comparison between the 47mm Luminor PAM372 and the 44mm Luminor PAM390

Wrist Shots[/b]
and now for the most important part  ;D

that's all from me for now. i will be following up with another PAM390 review soon.
hope u enjoyed it as much as i did.

Not really, both are very different watches. Size is just the tip of the iceberg. The hands are different, the case are different, the movement, the case back, and lots more.

yes, it's funny why Panerai decided to make it only a LE, not a SE.

in addition to that announced PAM422 as a SE, but then decided to cut it down to a LE also.

but with or without the SE box, it'll always be a SE in my collection.

when u see the word marina, basically that model will have a sub-second dial i.e. not a base.
the marina version of the 372 will be the PAM422, out this year end.

different people have different likings, i prefer a base :)

the PAM339 has taken a beating due to composite issues, but i have seen a few and never encountered such issues.
i think it only involves a small fraction of the watches.

but becos of this beating, u can find PAM339 for around 50K. (list price 47500).

Trend wise it seems to be going back to the size of 42... but if you are like me then you don't give a fu*k about trends.. (altough im coming from the otherside.. love vintage so i'm oki with watches as small as 34mm :) ) but Panerai has Poison me... everything from the simplistic design to the options of straps

Great review and thanks for sharing the information.

My only question is why did you say "plexi are easy to maintain".
I have read review commenting that plexi gets scratches easily as compared to sapphire glasses. What is your view on this. Thanks

Kind regards,
Wilson

The scratches can be polished out by toothpaste or other polish designed for the acrylic crystal.

I would choose the PAM 210 (Radiomir) over the PAM112 because once you start you can't stop. Damn Panerai virus is worse than HIV.:shocked1:  Further down the road you would want a model with small seconds hand and I think the Luminor case is better suit the small seconds hand.

A Radiomir can be dress up or down depends on the straps. Plenty to play with and second hand value is quite stable. In case you want to get out.  ;)

I would hunt around for a nice used ones. The AD here will kill you. PM me if you have more question.

Just my 2 cents

Regards
T
