Post by: el118 on December 10, 2013, 03:29:19 PM
Sorry to keep you guys waiting. here comes the brief review of the A. Lange & Sohne Langematik Perpetual

Technical specifications

Size           : 38.5mm

Thickness        : 10.2mm ( which I think is a real feat with perpetual calender  complications.

Case                     : Platinum

Strap           : Hand-sewn Crocodile skin

Functions        : Perpetual Calendar. Of which is able to take into accounts the 29th of Feb in the leap year, and no adjustment in
date is needed until 1st Mar 2100. (how I wish to be alive by then to perform the feat of adjusting the 1 day by
                                myself)

Power reserve          : 46 hours (moderate, considering the complications involved)

Water resistant          : 30 m (Standard for dress watch, not impressive, but for God’s sake nobody will wear this watch to dive)

Calibre             : L922.1 Sax-0-Mat with 21 carat gold and platinum rotor

The movement has 43 jewels & beats at 21,600 vph

                            "Sax" means Saxonia series,

"0" refers to the patented “0-reset” mechanism.

                            "Mat" means automatic winding

It is a bi-directional winding mechanism (adding complexity to achieve thin mechanism)

The gold rotor has an intricate crafting of word s "A. Lange & Sohne" as well as "Sax-0-Mat"

Unique features

i)   Patented large double window date display located at the top of the dial

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/LangePerpetual19.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/LangePerpetual19.jpg.html)

ii)   Patented "Zero Reset" seconds hand. Of which the seconds hand will jump to 0 everytime the crown is pulled for adjustment of
time, making accurate setting of time to the second.

iii)   Rhodium colored solid silver dial with Rhodium plated Gold Roman Numeral Hour Markers, with super luminova materials.

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131206_131755.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131206_131755.jpg.html)

The "Bling Bling" hour markers added rich textures to the dial especially when you view from the side

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131205_221031.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131205_221031.jpg.html)

iv)   Close examination of the dial would reveal the intricate and richness in design as it comes in “ layers” the primary layer contains
the Applied Roman Hour markers with slight recessed centre dial that holds the hour and minute hands. The next layer contains
the 3 sub dials for month, day and seconds hand, while the fourth layer for mini subdial for the leap year and moonphase
indicators. It looked balance & neat with despite such complicated displays.

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/LangePerpetual26.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/LangePerpetual26.jpg.html)

v)          Side case with sandwiched mat surface by two high gloss surface, adding good visual texture to the ultra- fine finishing.

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131210_132322.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131210_132322.jpg.html)

vi)          The watch comes with a solid winder, runs on battery that could be kept winding inside a safe. Could be adjusted with 9 winding
             speed.

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131203_141818.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131203_141818.jpg.html)

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131208_184342.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131208_184342.jpg.html)

Significance of the Langematik Perpetual model

i)           1st Perpetual Calender by Lange back in 2001

ii)           A. Lange & Söhne claims that this is the first  time in history that an automatic wristwatch with a perpetual calendar and
on "outsize"date that permits the different calendar displays and the moon phase display to be individually corrected with
separate recessed buttons, or advanced together with the main push button.

iii)          I was surprised to find out that Langematik Perpetual offers unsurpassed convenience :  no matter where the calendar
mechanism happens to be, the hour and minute hands can be advanced or retreated without jeopardizing the calendar
mechanism. This means that there’s no "red zone," as there is on certain other perpetual calendar watches, during which
resetting the hands is taboo. "Red zones" typically span a several-hour-long interval, usually from 10pm to 2 am. (Despite this, as
best practice I think I will still refrain from doing so)

Developments

i)   The main push-button at 10 0’clock was changed to recessed button from 2007 onwards by Lange, of which quite a few of Lange
lovers protested that it lost the “signature look” of the Lange range. I personally find that the original button comes handy when
you need to adjust for a few days, and looks iconic with the watch.

ii)   First launch with a price of USD54,400, latest price is a whopping USD91,800 (MSRP for Malaysia is MYR294,000 - Platinum case
             with platinum deployant buckle)

(http://i1211.photobucket.com/albums/cc422/el118/ALS/20131210_132457.jpg) (http://s1211.photobucket.com/user/el118/media/ALS/20131210_132457.jpg.html)

Latest model only equipped with pin buckle. This platinum deployant buckle, would cost MYR 25,000 new if bought separately

A watch of orgasmic proportions...  :o and very well taken close up pictures...
You do not need anyone's assistance to take the pics.

The wait is well justified... ;D

Although I'm not into formal watches anymore, I can totally understand your overwhelming joy in acquiring this piece..
This is truly an heirloom that deserves to be passed from generation to generation....
'You are only looking after this for your next generation'...ooopssss that's PP tagline

Congratulations of the highest order, Eric...

Not to be a party pooper but technically is this a Grand Complication following the official specification of at least 3 high complications in a watch as per my previous post..
Nevertheless a grand watch at the very least..

Correct me if I'm wrong and advance apologies to owners of even more complicated watches if any, this is the grandest watch displayed to-date by a MWF member (and a very recent one at that) since I joined in 2012 and possibly also the costliest?
The other MWF member (also very new to MWF then) who created such a hooh-hah during MWF 4th Ann Gtg was 'primus' with the PP Perpetual & meteorite dial Daytona but no news since.

The record and very high benchmark is now set.... :'(

For awhile at least, its going to be hard to be excited about other lesser watches.... :(

Perhaps we should start a MWF Hall of Fame with a few categories..such as 'Rookie WIS (< 1 year membership or xx number of posts, WIS  and Veteran WIS (member since the 1st year of formation)

Another title we already 'unofficially' have  ;D  is Thread of the Year so there could be 'MWF Watch Acquisition of the Year'. I'd like to nominate el118 for this award.

Mark my words, this thread will garner one of the highest counts eventually.

how do you top this???

Money, and the willingness to spend it, makes many wonderful things possible! At RM294,000 a piece MSRP, this watch is indeed a grail (read - not available) to most!

Fantastic pictures, great write-up, and what a watch! The hallmarks beside the PT950 are another great feature not seen in many watches cased in precious metals!

Just curious, el118, do you actually wear this outstanding watch going out? I know of a young 30-something Chinese CEO who wears a Richard Mille as a daily beater, even when going out for drinks or dinner in the PJ area!

Hi KennT,

Yes i do. It is now my favourite watch with the most wrist time. i normally wear it to office. mind you, i would be very much afraid if i was carrying hard cash but a watch of equivalent value i felt safer. i did ask myself why and i came to the following conclusions

1) the watch normally slipped under my sleeve and not many people get to see.

2) it is not a brand that every tom dick and harry know, like Rolex in Gold. 9 out of 10 people even if they saw it would thought it is some fancy stainless steel fashion watch. ( so in a way do not attract unncessary attention )

3) i always remind myself from going to places i find not "safe"

Hi el118, thanks for enlightening! Wearing a watch that costs more than some new E-Class Mercs on your wrist, you just can't be too careful in terms of safety! And it's also a clear statement about who wears the pants in the house!

Your choice of Platinum over Gold speaks of class and good taste! Not only is PT 10% heavier and 1.5 times harder than AU, it's melting point is 67% higher (1063 vs 1773 *C), making PT more difficult for master craftsmen, who need special tools and skills, to work on this metal compared to AU! These facts should raise a notch higher in appreciating the value and beauty of your epic catch! Wear it in good health, el118!

Have the chance to observe how the perpetual calendar works. it actually started to change the date from 28 Feb around 11pm, and the date "fast forward" to 29, then 30 and 31, finally by 20 min past midnite, it changed to 01 Mar.

even tho this is not the first time seeing this watch. it looks awesome every time i see it..

I salute you Eric.
I've never taken the trouble to view the date change from Feb to March or from 30th to 1st on my GO Perpetual….I even missed the switch end of year change on the L to 1 to 2 to 3.
Looks like you r more WIS than me or I need a ALS Perpetual to make me to do that..

hahaha…...such an under whelming emotion ;D

For those of us whose raging hormones for the fairer sex has dropped down several few clicks somewhat (much to our sadness- the mind is willing but the flesh is weak) as compared to our young teenage days, this watch could well be the next best thing to work up our blood pressure….

Wow so nice!!
