Product Placement: Watch Co. Sponsoring Movies
« on: June 02, 2010, 02:04:41 AM »
Have you guys notice that nowadays that more and more reference or close up of watches are featured in movies.

Very covert way of advertising. The days of spreading your image on the first and last pages of publications are over. Ppl need to see the watches on the wrist of the stars in action. Also the studios need to squeeze every available opportunity to make a buck as much as possible. If the movie tanked, atleast the initial cost is covered abit by the advertising revenues.

Iron Man 2 is sponsored by JLC with constant shots of him wearing different JLC models and paying for strawberries with a watch. The previous movie was sponsored by Bulgari.

Just watched The Losers and most of the main characters are wearing Breitlings. With atleast a close up on the watch face as well as Jason Patric@Max got robbed of his Navitimer (I think) in the bus.

The trend is not limited to Hollywood. Product placement is commonly practiced in the HK movie industry also. Have you noticed that in many HK movies the characters are always seen wearing Omega watches and using Sony mobiles? With a big enough budget Omega even succeeded in getting James Bond to lose his Rolex and put on the Omeega Seamaster.  ::)

IMHO all these promotional expenses merely drives up the price watches without adding real value to the product.

Ya... didn't see any close up in IronMan2 :p Maybe my eyes was too busy on Scarlett  ;D

If you watch Pelham 123 (played by John Travolta), he's wearing a Breitling chrono through out the entire movie  (can see it's chrono from far but can't tell what model it is), but during the close up (at least 2 times), they shown the 3 hands Breitling instead... it's clearly a mistake or the director just don't really bother to take care this small little detail... or just for the sake of promoting the new watch :p Then again, in the same movie, another close up for a JLC (40 hours power reserve, master control series) on the NYC mayor wrist...

If you watch the local production movie, WooHoo.. you will notice that Jack Lim is wearing a maurice lacroix in this movie.. new model (or at least 2008 to 2009)... I think if he sell his watch maybe he can buy 2 tickets for his parents to go Japan to enjoy the real "sejuk~~" liao :D
