Jaeger LeCoultre or simply JLC is famously known as the watchmaker's watchmaker. This is because they supply movements to almost all notable prestigious brand in the world of high horology, including the Big 3 - Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin. Their most iconic model is the Reverso, which is arguably even well known than the brand itself and unfortunately overshadows other watches in their collection.
This JLC Polaris chronograph is part of the Polaris collection of JLC, basically their sports model. JLC revived the design of their iconic Memovox Polaris (first launched in 1968) on its 50th anniversary and launch an entire family of Polaris with different complications. It retains much of the original design language but is updated with modern materials and technology.
Lets start with the dial, its a black dial that oozes sophistication with 3 concentric circles, the innermost circle has a metallic sunburst finish, with minimal wording. The second circle is textured with a fine granular finish and houses the fully lumed minute markers and numerals and finally, the outermost circle is matte finished with tachymeter scale. The case is fully satin brush other than the corner of the bezel and lugs which has a polished finish. It has olive-shaped chronograph pushers which is an unusual design choice as these are normally used in 1920s to 1930s chronographs.
Although it has a relatively large dial of 42mm, it wears like a 40mm. This is because of the flat underside of the watch and the short lugs help it to wrap around the wrist which makes it comfortable for wrist size as small 14cm in circumference. It is incredibly thin for a chronograph, i.e. 12.1mm including the domed sapphire crystal which is comparable to the newest Rolex Daytona at 11.9mm.
The movement perhaps is what most excites watch enthusiast. The caliber 751 is JLC's own in house 4 hertz movement with 65 hours of power reserve. It has twin barrels which ensures a more even torque release of energy from the mainsprings. a vertical clutch allows the chronograph to be run 24/7 without damaging the movement and column wheel which ensures a crisp feel and sound when the chronograph function is engaged. The accuracy of the watch is impeccable, JLC does its own test in house for a staggering 1000 hours which is far beyond the standards set by COSC. The movement is nicely finished with blue heated screws and 37 jewels. It also has a blacked tungsten rotor and ceramic rotor bearing for maximum winding efficiency.
The watch is dated 1 November 2019 and the condition is relatively good for its age as it had been worn with care. It does have light scratches and scruff on the case and clasp which I had tried my best to highlight and I had factored this in my asking price. The condition of the watch is not for fussy people, please stay away.
There isn't any major dings or nicks to the case which cannot be removed by a light polishing job. JLC had quoted a price of RM1,510 for a polishing job should you wish to but in my opinion is a waste of money. Watches are meant to be worn and small nicks and scratches are inevitable.
Last thing I wish to highlight is the previous owner lost the physical warranty card. However, the warranty itself is not tied to the card and is registered to the owner online. The previous owner had transferred the warranty to me and I will transfer it to the future owner once full payment is received. I can show proof of ownership for a serious buyer.
