Rolex Submariner 5513 Matte Dial 1974 Non Serif
« on: June 16, 2021, 09:17:33 PM »
Rolex released the Submariner ref. 5513 in the early 1960s, and it was in production until 1989, making it one of the longest Rolex references to be produced continuously. It has served as the inspiration for countless other dive watches over the decades. The ref. 5513 was initially built with a glossy dial, but Rolex switched it to matte starting in around 1966. This style remained up until approximately 1984, when it went back to a glossy finish. Instantly recognizable, the no-date Submariner with two lines of text above six o'clock has undoubtedly become one of the most collectible watches of all time.

This example of the Rolex ref. 5513 Submariner is from 1974 and is categorized as a non-serif dial. For this serial number range, it's common to find both serif and non-serif dials. Rolex offered the two side by side. The naming convention comes from a very small detail on the three, six, and nine o'clock hour markers. At the corners of those larger markers, serif dials feature a bit of a flared corner whereas non-serif dials are not as pronounced. One way to tell the difference between the two is by looking at the "E" in Rolex - the non-serif dials actually have a serif on the middle stroke in "E" like on the example here. For more information on these types of dials, go to http://www.5513mattedial.com/Serifs.html. The lume on this Sub has aged to a beautiful buttery color that collectors tend to gravitate towards. This combination of the buttery lume with black dial and bezel gives the watch a great vintage look. In addition, the bezel ring has remained sharp, adding to the watches allure.
