Title: Rolex Price Evolution 1957 - 2010
Post by: ck77 on November 12, 2010, 10:03:29 AM
For your reference.

It is interesting to see the appreciation of Rolex watches over times, of course, based on various factors. But heck, their marketing strategy is the most successful one, among others.

Why Invest in Rolex? Because your risk of losing the amount you have spent is lower compared to other watches in the similar category. Infact if you invest in its sporty line, the value may appreciate over time...

If you are having RM10k++ to spend on your first swiss made watch... you might as well invest in preowned sport Rolex... the sellers are also willing to buy back (after deducting 15-20% off) your Rolex. Not sure about other brands...(>50% off original purchase price maybe)

Maximum they will take back from you is around 60% of your purchase price for other brands.

That's very generous. I spoke to an outlet whose general modus operandi is 25% of MSRP. So if you bought it at RM10,000, they will only offer you RM2,500. Shite!

Maximum they will take back from you is around 60% of your purchase price for other brands.

Very interesting.

I did a quick check for the SS Submariner w/o date. Back in 1957 it listed for 150US$. Using Google I managed to find a listing for a pre-owned 1957 SS Sub No Date in good condition going for approx 26000US$.

If your Grandpa had invested US$150 in this SS Sub back in 1957 and passed it on to your Dad and subsequently to you, 3 generations would have enjoyed the Rolex Sub and yet its value would have appreciated at a compounded rate of 10.2% to US$26,000. Talk about having your cake and eating it too. Not too shabby.

If my late father had the foresight to buy that ss sub and devoted to me on my birth year, I would have the fortune to have it and eat the cake too....

So for the fathers to-be, go ahead and buy one ss sub no date for your newly born and have him/her to enjoy the cake ...50 years down the road.

Any idea what was the exchange rates back then? (1957)

dc

I have no idea. 1957 = Merdeka year. Was the Ringgit even in existence back then?

Interesting...but back then in 1957, if one can pay USD150 to buy a watch, I believe he must be rich in Malaysia. Back then, most of our ancestors are still struggle with food, makan pun tak ada duit, mau beli jam tangan.

So, if you do not have the watch inherited to you now, don't blame them, just blessing you are still exist now

USD150 in 1957 is equivalent to USD1,200 in 2011

there are still tons of rich families from yesteryear

look at the banking families... the rubber tycoons ...mining tycoons... medicated oil tycoons.. i kind of wonder what treasure trove they left for their children...  :D

infact my hometown was mercedes' best market in SEA for commercial and private cars during those times. they have even put up their 3 pointed star up the hill.

Bro,

You need to be a bit more specific. 200x is about 10 years, 2000 - 2009. Also which sub? With date or not?

A frontage ds shoplot in Pudu, KL, was under 100k back in 1970 then! My father told me that one family doctor he used to see happily sold his lot at that amt, migrated to Aust, then returned abt 20 yrs ago. He bght similar lot back at abt 600k, although higher price, but now worth over 2.8m! ......... Only increased by 28x ........... Better invest in Rolex can increased by over 200x as you guy had suggested. :Startled:

Damn ........ not enough money to use! :Scolding:
Who said Rolex can increased by over 200x?

Sub with date, year 2000 and Sub with date year 2009? or 2010? (I mean the last model where no inner bezel engraved), and the latest one (engraved inner bezel with date...

I think zitan missunderstood...200x not mean as 200times but 200x (x = 1 to 9) meaning year 2001 to year 2009...nobody suggested Rolex price can increased to 200 times per year?? ;)
