Intro & Context:
Hi all. First and foremost, a simple confession, I caught the 'horological bug' in 2017. As a result of thirst for knowledge and (no doubt) time piece acquisitions, I started to read a lot of online resources about the history and evolution of some of the famous timepieces most of us here love and love to own.
I notice that a lot of fellow forummers (newbies in particular) started the way I did, i.e. not knowing much about watches, or perhaps don't have the patience to really know more beyond buying advise - i.e. can advise me which watch to buy bro?
So here is my own personal effort to help elevate our local community's knowledge since I have nothing better to do with the information anyway. :)
Format:
- I have created a series of Instagram-friendly infographics called "The Ones to Watch" which is about the icons of our popular brands. With each entry, I will put some basic trivia about the watches, followed by my own personal 'highly opinionated' commentary (some call it trolling).
- Each new series will focus on ONE brand. I will subjectively identify what I feel are Legendary Icons, Modern Icons and Honorable Mentions. Some of course won't make the cut.
- My list will only feature current catalogue models, and does not include limited editions. Reason being, if you can't even get them anymore from brand boutiques and ADs, it doesn't encourage us to buy anyway. :D
- As a bumper debut, I will update for 3 days consecutively. Following this, I aim to release a new entry every 2 days.
- Once I'm done with a brand, I will move to another brand. Series 1 is Rolex (our MWF favourite), and Series 2 is Omega. My planned 3rd is Tag Heuer. Following this, I'm open to suggestions but have in the pipeline to look into JLC, Zenith and Breitling.
- I am not a watch professional - purely a watch addict. So please don't flame me for my amateur work!
- If you like what you see, like and follow my posts on Instagram to keep updated. https://www.instagram.com/watchaddict.wt/
Appreciate your support and do let me know if I have the facts wrong. Tell me if you like what you see - it keeps me motivated to do this. Of course, be reminded that I will include my opinion and some may feel offended by it. I encourage you to treat them as a point of view, to which you may disagree.
Without further ado, my first post.

Trivia:
First launched in 1953, the diving icon of Rolex retains the same DNA as the very first model even though the current day variant now has a Maxi-case and ceramic bezel. The Submariner was designed to be a professional diver’s watch and through Hans Wildorf’s marketing genius, was affixed to a Bathyscape deep-diving submarine, diving 300+ metres and resurfacing still in working condition. The Submariner’s simple good looks and famed reliability as a luxury mechanical sports watch, added with its silver screen presence via Sean Connery’s James Bond are just some of the many reasons it has achieved legendary status.
WatchAddict (WA)'s View:
There is a classiness to the watch that somehow has been lost a little when the bezel became thicker and the symmetry was broken by the cyclops on the date edition. And don’t get me started on Kermit, Hulk and Smurf – these are really for acquired tastes. My vote still goes to the no-date version as it epitomises the timeless design of the Submariner best. Regardless, it will definitely remain a best-seller for years to come. Rolex, if it’s not too much to ask, could you please give the Glide-lock feature to other watches as well?
-
Very nice, I’m sure many here will appreciate the time, effort and information which you have compiled.
Looking forward to your next post.
-
Well done on this post! Keen to see more from you soon.
Can’t agree more with the glide lock feature. It’s weird that a datejust will have the glide lock and not an Explorer.
Oh and one suggestion, if you’re super keen on the subs, look for a book online called “Rolex Submariner Story” by Guido Mondani & Lele Ravangani. They have a full record of all subs to date and it’s history. They have other books regarding collecting subs as well so you could delve into those.

Trivia:
Released in 1955, this icon gained the name Daytona in line with the famed speedway in 1963, one year after Rolex became the official timekeeper of the legendary race. The watch became synonymous with this racetrack, and gained further fame via Paul Newman, an actor, racer and gentleman; a celebrity of the era. His unsponsored association with the watch and motor racing elevated the Daytona to stratospheric levels. Before running on the current in-house 4130 movement, it once used a modified El Primero automatic as part of the post-quartz revival. Its cult status was cemented when a personal watch by Paul Newman broke the watch auction record in 2017 to be the most expensive watch ever sold for $17.8m.
WatchAddict (WA)'s View:
Over-rated and over-priced. Don’t get me wrong, the legendary Newman Daytona is great; i.e. when it was a pure motor racing tool watch with the clean art deco inspired and iconic panda dial aesthetic. But in its current iteration, tell me how anyone can justify paying over the odds for a watch that has reached cult status mainly by a man that today’s generation don’t relate to? The new design arguably makes the dial look even smaller and busier than before. I also think the current model holds the record for the most number of non-functional words on a chronograph. Perhaps the grey market justifies charging an extra 10% premium for every additional word on the dial.

Trivia:
The classic watch that has its history linked to a time before Rolex’s sports models. The Datejust was launched in 1945 to commemorate Rolex’s 40th anniversary. It incorporates a screw down crown, water resistant Oyster case and became the first watch to have a self-changing date complication. Interestingly the synonymous Datejust cyclops magnifier only becomes part of its identity in 1954. Combined with the instantly recognisable fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet, the Datejust has all the recognisable features found in almost all of Rolex’s other watches. You’d also be spoilt for choice as it comes in many dial, material and size options.
WatchAddict (WA)'s View:
WA’s View: This is as dressy and timeless as Rolex gets, and probably the one model that can make me re-think non-white metals – but only when I start greying. Some may even say that if you just have to have one Rolex, this could be it. However, this is also the exact model that is directly associated in the Asian world with newfound wealth and showiness. It does not help that a lot of the owners that created this stigma tend to be of an older age, which lessens the appeal of the watch to the younger buyers. The Datejust deserves to be up there with the legends and thus the stigma is unfortunate. I must say though that the Datejust looks really good when worn on a woman’s wrist.

May I suggest 1-2 less famous brands but still make good watches, such as Maurice Lacroix, Arnold and Son, etc.

May I suggest 1-2 less famous brands but still make good watches, such as Maurice Lacroix, Arnold and Son, etc.
Can certainly consider - will need to ramp up my knowledge-base a bit first so that I at least pay the brands sufficient respect. Do point out if you have any good resources for me to familiarise with bro iffy38!
-
There are other good brands out there that get a lot less love, companies like Vacheron, Longines, Breguet, the movement finishing darling A.Lange & Sohne, on top of the Maurice Lacroix and Arnold & Son I mentioned earlier.
Mix it up a little bit.
When it comes to their history, I think the old boy Wikipedia would be your best friend. Some brands may be hard to pronounce, ie: Lacroix is pronounced as "Lar Kwah", Breguet is "...." so perhaps you can start with that.
-
Good stuff.. GMT is certainly a great piece that is handsome, versatile and well respected.

The Seamaster. As far as I am aware, it is the only watch line that started off as a dress watch, then morphed into a sports watch later. The vintage Seamasters are small, thin dressy pieces on aligator straps, but modern ones are an alternative to the Submariner.
Nice watch, but the transition from dress to sports along the way is rather interesting. There is even a Quartz version.

Thanks for the additional points!
Actually if you read into the history of the watch, it started off already with water resistant capabilities similar to the oyster perpetual and instead as versatile watches, neither dress nor sporty. (The Rolex OP was originally on leather straps too).
Agree that the transition to full dive watch came later.
Also the quartz point is clearly noted - hence I made the passing remark that it was the quartz model that got them through the darkest of days. I believe if not for that Omega would have struggled a lot more.
It's good stuff iffy38. Let's keep the dialogue going since the more the facts are challenged, the more it piques the curiosity to verify / validate! :)

I like you views. Keep it coming.

:Laughing_on_floor:
I'm sure we will. After all, it has existed for 60 years now, so am sure there's enough content for a lot more. Haha!
But yes, Speedmaster fatigue aside, my final post on Omega will be the one after this. Then I'm moving on to the next popular brand in Malaysia - Tag Heuer with just 4 entries in the pipeline for that.
I've content being prepared for the 4th and 5th series already thereafter. Stay tuned.
-
Not so much that it has existed for 60 years, but the sheer number of Limited Editions out there. At the rate that you are doing this, you might need several years to cover them all.
Do note that this is by no means a criticism to your amazing series.
Looking forward to see you when you cover Tag Heuer and the other less popular brands.
-
Haha. I completely concur and know where you are coming from.
There are more than a 100 limited editions and it was important I factored from the start I won’t be able to cover all and only picked those that I felt had a compelling horological relevance and strong following by the community for a story worth telling. And so after some very careful consideration, I decided I will only cover 5 entries.
Thanks for the continuous feedback! I mean it when I say it, this series is only possible when I am getting such comments - as it tells me someone’s reading and that there’s an interest for what is coming next!
-
Have no doubt that you have people reading your posts. I too concur that the Speedy Tuesday is over hyped. Not that I wouldn't mind having one (I'm a sucker for panda dials as well ;D ) but the price points are a bit too hard to accept.

Agreed on the price points. I guess when you think about it, it is hard to put a price tag on luxury.
Perhaps that’s why you have micros such as Dan Henry and Undone trying to tap into the unserved segment who like the vintage chrono dials but unable to stomach the cost of entry.
