What do you think about this brand?
DANIEL WELLINGTON
(http://imageshack.us/a/img189/9181/67117780.jpg)
Seen them very often, and tons of them selling in local forums, quartz, minimalist design, colorful straps, what else? Love? hate?
-
one of the watch that should not ever appear in mwf or any watch forum.. ever :Laughing_on_floor:
nothing against the watch personally, just don't see the reason to spend that money on that watch when i can get a seiko prospex with that money. can't lie that it has really beautiful and elegant design, but its just not worth the money, and also too mainstream. many young people thinking it as a luxury and going crazy over it..
-
Not worth it in my opinion when there are other choices for the same amount of money around. Good as a gift for the uninitiated WIS though.
-
Gotta agree that this watch is not worth it at all. I rather settle down with a Swatch which cost maybe half the price of DW?
-
Cant say I hate it, but ya, young ppl like it alot. Thats why im puzzle, what so special about it. Minimalist bauhaus design and fancy strap, fashion accesories. But... Hahahaha
-
My colleague asked me about this brand and as a fellow wis, I have a hard time telling him my opinion on this watch, maybe I just need to be honest but tactful.
-
Definitely not worth the money paid for it and its a fashion watch.
And as Mikster said, a watch that should not appear in MWF.
-
Every watch deserves a place in the horology world. Be it a fashion watch, toy watch or grand complications Patek Philippe.
Personally i would not buy this brand, but i can't deny that they look quite good and funky.
Would like to see if Enkidu ever get inspired by this to dress his VC Patrimony with Nato strap or not :Laughing_on_floor:

I agree with swleong,
I think every watch has a place somewhere in the horological map.
Be it a cheap watch or even a pasar malam watch.
We all gotta start somewhere.
But as with this DW brand goes, I do believe for the money... one can certaily find better options.
-
But how do I break it to my colleague? Haha
-
better just buy a timex weekender which probably is half the price.
-
But how do I break it to my colleague? Haha
What I normally say is:
"Bro, the design is kinda cool. But my suggestion is that you get a watch from a true blue watch brand.
At least they are in the watch business proper... Seiko is a good start, g-shocks for ruff n tough.
If you're adamant about getting a similar designed watch, there are some brands out there with bauhaus design charging a little extra that's worth considering.
But buying watches is a personal thing, you go for what floats your boat, but since u asked for my opinion, that's it."
-
Ask yourself, do you want a fashion watch or a '"true" watch? If that sings to you, go ahead. For me, definitely "true" watch is the way to go.
-
just a fashion statement watch.... i prefer komomo brand better thn this DW
-
Its not easy to break it to them, they will hate me for that :Dancing_banana:

but your colleauge ASKED for it ;D

I am not sure what this has to do with me... ::) ::)
But since you mention it, yea...maybe something like this will be nice..

I don't see the big problem honestly.
I mean being colleagues and definitely friends to a certain degree, your friend would like to hear honest opinions and not just "sure" "yes" and "go ahead"
-
Nah for me... But love the colorful straps
-
Never heard about this. ???
-
Not keen on these
-
Saw a rich friend wearing one, thought it was some expensive stuff
And then I saw this thread. :Laughing_on_floor:
-
Nah a bit too fashion watch for me
-
The Natos are pretty hippy but it's still a no-no for me.
-
Yesterday I would have no idea that this watch exist in the market.
But today I saw them in a boutique in Singapore and on my way back they advertise in the Tiger Tales magazine.
They are doing aggressive advertisement. I think the design suitable for the young.

I'm 90s but I'm not keen of fashion watch. Can't be deny, friends around me and other young people really like DW.
If want me buy fashion watch, I will only look at Guess Collection. ;D
-
I keep thinking about denzel washington.... Awesome actor. I bet those buyer dont buy because of him...
-
Have you guys been to their website to find out who the heck Daniel Wellington actually is?
One truckload of total cockadooldle bull faeces. I have a strong feeling it's a China/Taiwan/HK company with a strong creative team to market this brand.
Design is sleek, gentlemanly and decent. Honestly an attractive looking watch if you don't look into the details.
That being said, everything might be china made.
Very rich backers to start the brand and then mass market it like this. Create a hispter gentleman hype that the hipsters will gullible enough to buy into without any due dilligence.
Pfft..
The only Wellington i know are Pua Chu Kang boots.
I tell my friends this, it's made in China, marketed in a western country. It's a quartz.
Spend a little more for a Tissot Classic or a nice Mido.
-
Yeah all of my friends are 'all over' DW.
They think its a classy brand based on its 'classy' name.
And well, the price of course.
But i guess most people go for a watch just based on the looks, right?

Put a fancy sounding name, take a few good social media pictures with a hipster model, preferably a person with short sleeves, artistic tattoo full sleeve, a beard, classic round sun-glasses, and maybe a cup of coffee or latte in the picture. And you've got a hit with the young buyers. A gwailo sounding name like Hans Rayney could sell well

Count me in, i have a bunch of guys who do branding, marketing, sales, events, logistics, and technical. hahaha

Actually, the design is fine, typical minimalist design, nothing wrong with quartz too, hongkong, or china doesnt matter too, but I just hope ppl (particularly youngster these days) dont buy for the sick of trend and hear say. If its good for you, then buy. Cannot tahan with DW show off. :-D
-
You don't need to spend money on DW. Go to Guardian pharmacy and buy Vaseline lotion and you may win one of the 50 sets of couple watch worth more than 1k. Good luck! ;D

I hear you Hidden, I have the same dilemma with a guy wearing a Grand Seiko in the office. ::)
Ps. If you/they like the DW then go with it. To get the max from your timepiece you want it, like it or need it and I couldn't care less what the brand is...Go with it and care less what people think or say
pps. I am off to buy a Daniel Wellington...

IMO,
With 700k Instagram follower a lot effort put into the social media marketing and focuses on "Lifestyle" rather than watchmaking just sip in the market with price range of RM500+ where majority brand at this price range is not having such a strong identity and marketing effort like DW (excluding G shock).
This is what the direction they heading to: hot guy and pretty girl enjoying their own time wearing a DW...so if you strap on a DW, then...
without appearing in the major watch chain store or shopping mall in Malaysia but I still can spot one or two DW in the wild in a daily basis (at klcc area). Have to agree that they penetrated the market silently yet is doing a good job :o
Just a question, does anyone: be he or she is your friend of relative that you know of is wearing or owns a DW? for me the answer is YES
-

Enkidu - enjoy

Hmm, maybe made from same factory, so no replica

Simplicity at its best. Would say good marketing by their team to get the branding up...
-
According to my fren, facebook darling with fans >10k will get a free dw, but need to post their pics wearing them. Not sure if its true. My fb page only 3.5k, so I dont get free :-))
-
DW? Just another boutique brand like Guess and the rest to me. Would pay the same amount of $ for a automatic Seiko anytime. At least that justifies the money I spent.

For general ppl, seiko is too normal, dw seems / perceived special and luxury. :Dancing_banana: :Dancing_banana: :Dancing_banana:

It all boils down to each's individual preference anyway. For myself, just do not see a point paying over RM500 for a watch with quartz movement although I have to agree the watch looks good with the slim rose gold case.

Let's just say...
I'd rather be watch-less for another few years to save up for a JLC Ultra Thin...
Nailed it.

Lets just say.... You are on limited budget, would u rather not wearing any watch than buying a DW? Let say, u got lubang to buy dw with substantial discount?
-
This watch seems very elegant and classy. In my opinion, it looks like the IWC Portofino collection. Reasonable for the appearance I say.

Honestly, while I dont like DW, I think it is good to bring people back to wearing watches.
Instead of looking at the smartphone all the time
-
I like the minimalist design but I wouldn't buy one for myself. As a gift to someone, probably. I must say that their marketing team did a good job in marketing this watch (to WIS?). I think it's a decent fashion watch compared to brands of the likes of Fossil, Guess, etc.. But I couldn't help but put on a smug expression everytime I see someone on instagram/fb showing off their DW as if it's a luxury piece. Nobody I know is wearing one though (yet).
-
But ok la, at least we can have a "spot the dw" game...
-
I find it amazing that this DW thread has attracted 53 replies. Here is my contribution to the 54th reply. :Laughing_on_floor:

i see no DW there ;D

I am 90's and this brand is quite famous among my age
-
Quite popular with the teenagers, few of my fresh grad employees wears them.
Been trying to get my wife interested in watch. Some how this watch caught my wife's attention and she is considering to get one even after i've offering her a Rolex Datejust.
Depends on what you are looking for. A simple accessories to match a dress down weekend at a local cafe, yeah. very similar to a VC Patrimony. A more economical alternative would be a Frederique Constant Slim Line.

I think I agree, at last partly. Any watch is a good watch if it is being worn.

I would say that DW watches are fashion watch, so the price are reasonable and the company are doing well in marketing. I saw that many malaysian and singaporean are wearing this brand of watch. So if you wanna find a lower price watch, this would be quite a good watch for wearing.
-
Thought I'll post this here. Some of my relative's came over, and there I saw the DW.. Found on a pretty young lady :) (http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e329/isaactan1/Mobile%20Uploads/633A6278-4803-4B95-AF6D-90B8009542A4_zps6qem5k5c.jpg)

Actually for a non WIS, i would kind of agree to advise DW and G shock, its always a good to get ppl start wearing watches again.
Off course mechanical still have its charm, but in serious fact, not everyone need a mechanical.

DW = nothing more than a fashion quartz watch.
If you want to spend that amount of money, get a G-Shock/ Protrek/ Seiko 5.

Anyone know where is this DW watch made from and what japanese quartz are they using? ???
DW is made in the world famous watch production area situation between the Jura valley. All DW watches are running on fully in-house movements produced in their little workshop by hand. Each hand crafted watch is then assembled meticulously by hand. They even use the best Swiss made battery to power their fully in-house quartz movement. :Laughing_on_floor:

Best watches at reasonable prices with impeccable workmanship. A work of art. :mooning:
-
Gotta agree that this watch is not worth it at all. I rather settle down with a Swatch which cost maybe half the price of DW?
Yes, fully agree. Somemore now Swatch offers lifetime free battery change service, totally free of charge, and anywhere worldwide, as long as you go to the official Swatch outlet.
-
i read the story about the DW watch... the founder actually met a stranger named DW in australia ..during his
travel.. and loves the looks of the stranger's rolex Sub on a Nato strap... which give him inspiration to
start a watch Brand named after the Stranger...with many NATO straps options... simple idea can turn into
a multi million watch empires !
-
definitely NOOO WAYYY....awful design and bad quality, however i do admit they have a good way of branding it.
-
Not sure how much a DW costs, I'd rather a Max Bill for the bauhaus look. Then again, I'm biased ;D

It is a good watch for its price. But it isn't haute horology, that's for sure.
A Seiko would be much better...
-
It's a fashion and trendy watch but I just have no feel on it. Too bad...
-
colorful nato on gold plated
big no no
-
Really don`t know much about this though...Just getting through
-
The story is probably bullcrap. and I've bought DW from the same china factory that made it at 5usd a pop. so, it's not worth it lol
-
Nope. I don't want to pay for a watch that most of it's cost comes from marketing expenses. I want to pay for a watch that the cost is from manufacturing and designing of the watch (movement, dial, hands...).
-
These are the biggest pile of horsesh*t ever. The one thing I will give them is their ability to market junk because people are buying into it.
-
g schock or swatch is better
-
Overpriced nice looking watch
Not for me
-
i dont get it why all these Patek and Nomos homage of DW models recently
:Laughing_on_floor:
-
My 21 year old son bought a DW recently. He said that many of his college friends are really attracted to the “premium feel” of the brand. Like them or not, they are doing a great marketing job to push a brand new brand that has no real edge. I gave my young man a quick crash course on horology and now he aspires to own a Rolex, so I’m not so sure whether educating him was a good idea.

The design is simple and elegant but I would go for a real watch manufacturer like Casio or Seiko instead of fashionable brand
-
DW has a great marketing team using the influence of popular social media kinda to make their brand look cool. but they're pretty silent these days, too many other DW like brands coming up
-
Purely aesthetics . Don't like em at all.
-
I would prefer Casio/Seiko over them. Poor quartz movement and still cost a hell price to pay.
