Title: Watches are important. We need different pieces for different occasions?
Post by: notmanic on January 20, 2014, 09:02:33 AM
Guess one of the recent threads asking if a watch is important to men has started most of us talking, I believe that since we're all in a watch forum, watches (plural) are important to us! I do check time and date (if applicable) from the watch on my wrist (especially when meetings tend to drag on).

And since they are important, believe that most of us would have a different watch for each and every occasion (some of us subset more than others). Came across an article which says we should have at least 4 pieces/styles (i.e. Everyday, Vintage, Standout & Dress). I believe some of us have more than just 4 so what say you and what pieces do you have for which occasions? Let me start with mine below:

The Everyday Watches
a) Oris BC Day Date - Had this on for the last 10 years every single day. Now undergoes rotation schedule with those below
b) Longines Hydroconquest Date - Got this as a gift from my FC and yes, it is a nice and comfy piece to wear daily. Love the blue dial and bezel under the sun

The Outdoor/DIY Day Watch
a) G-Shock Analog - In the water, in the workshop, anywhere except a black tie affair. No brainer here. Tough enough to take a pounding and won't be heartbroken if something happens to it

The Vintage-style Watch
a) Tudor Heritage Black Bay - Good for chill out nights at dinner or at the pub. Fell in love with it the moment I laid eyes on it
b) Wishlist - Am also hoping to add the Heritage Blue Chrono to my collection, alongwith the likes of a Zenith Pilot (or something similar) or LLD

The Standout Watch
a) Zenith Stratos - At approx. 46mm, it is definitely hard to miss but if you do, the 'mickey logo' will draw your attention! Great for casual meet and greets, and a breakaway from the more mainstream crowd

The Travel Watch
a) G-Shock Analog - The tough watch for most of leisure travels. I tend to be very casual during holidays with shorts and flip-flops, and the G-Shock won't feel out of place. Also won't hurt as much if it goes lost or stolen. I have 2 colours of the same model, so it depends on my attire for the day!
b) Wishlist for a bit more serious travels or biz trips - Looking for a worldtimer (WT) and it seems like 2 models (Frederique Constant's WT and Alpina's WT) from the same stable caught my eye. Looking to get a hold and try out Alpina's WT as I want to know which will call my name out louder

The 'Once-in-a-while-if-I-feel-like-it' Watch
a) Junkers Chrono - My only handwound watch which I'll put on if I happen to wear black for casual occassions

The Dress Watch
a) None at the moment - Hardly have any black tie affairs (must be due to the industry I'm in), but this doesn't stop me from pining for a few pieces. May look to add one or two pieces (if budget somehow permits in the near future) from JLC, ALS, VC or GO. Till then will have to search for one that doesn't force me to sell my kidney, liver and lungs...  :Blue:

The 'I am a Complicated' Watch
a) Similar to the dress watch, haven't actually found a need for it, therefore none at the moment. But yet again, doesn't stop me wanting. Hahahha... The usual suspects as above comes to mind but believe will have to sell my entire families' kidneys, livers and lungs...

Believe there are definitely more occasions (and our list for watches gets longer and longer), but this should get the ball rolling! Would love to hear what others wear, and when it matters.

Happy Monday!

Interesting thread.  I will play...
The everyday watch
a) Omega Speedy Pro-Extremely comfortable to wear and love the daily ritual of winding up the watch.
The outdoor/DIY day watch
a) Casio Initial Blue Riseman-It is black and virtually shock proof. Perfect for occasions where the going gets tough.
The vintage style watch
a) Longines Legend Diver-Almost an exact replica of vintage compressor dive watches from Longines at a very reasonable price.
The standout watch
a) Zenith Stratos Striking 10th-I have the exact same thoughts as you bro!
The travel watch
a) Casio Edifice or Protrek-it is rough, tough and have every complications a traveler needs.
The once in a while watch
a) B&R BR03-94 Phantom-Only when I need a black out watch on my wrist to match my dark dressing or to subdue an overly bright get up.  :D
The dress watch
a) Glashutte Original Panomaticlunar- Not the thinnest of watches but definitely my most dressy watch in my possession.

Now I know why we could never have too many watches.  I will try using that list to justify to my wife as to why my watch collection is extremely limited.  :Laughing_on_floor:

this is getting interesting!

@hanz: the ultimate list! hahahaha... we'd be out of a place to store our watches then and the best option would be to buy a watch shop and run the business...  :Dancing_banana:

@yikkie: believe our other halves have their own list to buy their jewellery, perfume, bags, shoes, belts, etc.

In terms of a dress watch, nobody is insisting that it must be minimalist and thin yet. Guess our black tie affairs are still quite 'casual' in the wrist sense or we don't get invited that much?

nice one meor! not only have to justify to bini on our long list of watches but now have to compete with them for storage space at home... however, can't leave watches without a lock and key... it would be the end of the world if we came back to find it all empty...

some of those with a smaller collection in pieces tend to have bigger value in numbers...  :Laughing_on_floor:

I could be wrong but I observe that owners of perp calendar watches seem to only wear these watches "once in a while"...can't help but feel that it's a waste of $ to buy such a marvel timepiece that gives us virtually all the functions that a watch has to offer but the utility is low.

Agreed.. that's why to me, the perpetual calendars are best to acquire last when I've sold/given away all my other watches and it better come with a minute repeater loud enough for me to hear because I cannot bloody see the time without my glasses.

Wondering what will most of us wear for CNY Day 1 and 2?

CNY Day 1
Think I will don the Tudor Black Bay cos 'ang-ang'

CNY Day 2
Either continue with BB or the Stratos will make an appearance

What about the rest of MWF?

Not to mentioned about the black hour markers. The Patina is awesome well aged.

A smooth gold crown.

If its a watch then its a watch irrespective of vintage or modern for this kind of watch.

Like Mao Zedong quote : "No matter if it is a white cat or a black cat; as long as it can catch mice, it is a good cat."

Once the watch its on my wrist I 'll never take it out such a beautiful watch.

Though I wear a SUB but I am not HUM SUB here as I don't drive a HUMMMER

Just about every rich person I know has wealthy parents.  The easiest way to make money is to start with money.

very true, the rich gets richer and well, the poor gets poorer... News report recently highlighted Oxfam International's findings with excerpt below:

"Among the report's many shocking statistics about wealth and inequality: the world’s wealthiest 1 percent have $110 trillion in assets, 65 times the wealth of the poorest 50 percent of the world's population. The richest 85 people in the world have as much wealth as the bottom 50 percent, according to the report."

Well, if you believe in reincarnation, pray hard that you head into a rich family next round... as for me, I will end it with either heaven or hell...  :Praying:

From the list of riches man on earth, i think most of them are self made instead of inherited.

Inheritance is bonus but the satisfaction could never match the self made. and for those who inherited huge sum without hard work, most will squander away within 1 or 2 generations.

praying for next life to be born in rich family is like dreaming to strike TOTO for few times, considering the world populations and the percentage of "rich people".  Nevertheless, to realise the "Dream", One should start to do more sincere charity work, ( which could greatly increase your chances of better next life) ;D

Maybe so, I wouyldn't know.  But if you look at the top 1%, taking into account all; the old money, I think it is a very different story.

It's not impossible for a poor person to become rich, just extremely unlikely.  Which makes their achievement all the more amazing.

Sadly, I tend to agree with Jason and notmanic.

The world is now far too small, too populated and too competitive for an ordinary Joe to strike it rich all on his own. To get rich in the 21st century, you'll need any one or all of the following:

(1) a 1st class education from one of the top but usually very, very expensive elite universities at which you form your future network of equally rich and influential friends to expand your wealth,

(2) good family connection and/or wealthy friends and patrons to give you a good head-start and blow away all competition from your less wealthy peers, or

(3) being super smart and your intelligence are translated into unique goods and services which every one in this world wants. Not impossible but very rare.

Factors (1) and (2) above are more easily attainable if you are born into a wealthy family. It's a fact. Welcome to the real world. Go to china and you'll find that most of the super rich are from families of well connected government officials and their children are enrolled in the top schools in the US and in China and they receive super high salaries when they graduate and are sought after by large international investment banks and companies who wish to make use of their family business and political connections. An ordinary Joe from some distant province (or even Beijing or Shanghai) will end up looking for an ordinary and not so glamorous job in some stuffy office or factory with a salary which will make it very difficult for him to even to own his home.

somehow we have digressed from the topic... believe that most of MWF members are a fortunate lot to be within the middle-class and some higher up in the ladder... like i said big got big play, small got small play... the fact we're all in here is because of our love for horological timepieces and definitely trying to seek more than 1... (fortune god-willing la)

any more willing to share how they choose which pieces for which occasions? this will spawn ideas or potential wishlists for the rest of us...
