Dear all sifu here
I am a newbie and I just purchased an IWC Pilot Chronograph 3777 and it is a nice watch.
This is my working watch where I wear it during Monday to Friday.
Weekend I do not wear it.
The power reserve is 44 hours
Should I get a watch winder to wind it? if yes, how long should I wind it on weekend?
on it for 6 hours? will it overwind ?
is boxy a good watch winder? for single brick watch winder it cost around 400 plus...at Cortina they sell watch winder rm1600 plus with 4 winder and 4 watch box....which is worth?
Please help.
thanks

The relative importance of a winder is a choice one has to make for oneself. That said I love the Boxy winders. Quiet and reliable, I have been using mine for more than 2 years with no issue. They also have a battery pack that allows them to be used away from mains. Eg. In the safe or in safety deposit boxes.
I would not buy from the distributors here though. Way overpriced. Brookstone has the same winders for a fraction of the price. You would have to find a way to get them from the USA.

Fong

Dear Fong
thanks for your comment.
Yes I am looking at boxy bricks system and also the double watch winder from boxy
bricks system is made from carbon fibre and double is from wood casing.
wood is much nicer but cannot increase the winder into 3 if your collection of watch increase.
which model of boxy do you own?
mainly many watch seller sell watch winder with no brand and made in china that also cost more than rm1k but with four winder and 4 watch collection ......
what do you think ?

I am using the Boxy bricks. On a wooden box that holds 12 winders. I also have spare trays for 4 winders. PM me if you want more information on where to buy online.

For me, I will just wind it when i want to use it. Personally, the internal parts will last longer becoz its not running 24hrs a day. Of course you will still need to send for servicing (oiling n gasket change) when the time comes but the mechanical parts will not wear that much since its not running all the time. Just like your car engine, more mileage means more wear and tear. Different people have different opinion. Thats just mine ;D

master says - mechanical engineering - the more u run, the more friction, the more wear and tear
but if stop running - oil sit one side - when u run again - it cause more friction n watch might not run with good accuracy, thats y some watch manual says u need to wear the mechanical watch for some time to get it accuracy
so master advise - if watch not wearing, winding once a mth to let it run
-
If watch is not a perpectual or annual calender watch winder is a no , watch is running 365 days a year . . wearing watch or winding at least once every month would be the best rotational option . Putting on winder means maximum P R at all times.

Confused.
New on winders/watches too. Meaning, my watches if it is not a perpetual, don't put on the winders?

It would appear that the general consensus is, unless
1. you find it extremely troublesome to set up the watch after it has stopped
2. the time it is off the wrist is too short for the hassle and too long for the power reserve to keep it running
then don't bother with a watch winder.

The most extremely troublesome ones are those with a screw down crown.
After numerous "screwing" the fine threads will wear off, and it's costly to replace.
I found that out the hard way......with my Rolex.

not a must for me, but i do let my watch run at least once in 2 weeks time if not wearing
for me, using the wind box is only if you not wearing the watch for more than a month for some reason, the more u rotate the more wear and tear on the watch, which mean the shorter service time is require
if you have no time wear it outside, wear it at home ;D
-
If you tend to change watch in different day, u might consider one. Otherwise u must hardworking enough to tune the time
-
Watch winders are useful if u have a few self winding watches in your collection. Then at least when u decide to wear a particular 1 for a day you do not have to set the dates and time

I do have seven watch winders. It was great during the initial stage but eventually the novelty wears off.
It took me a while but I realised at if you have a perpetual calendar complication (like a Rolex sky dweller) than it makes sense as trying to readjust everything takes a lot of time.
Now my winders are only used as display cases.

Haha...bro, you really have many winders. I have 3 instead. I use winders for my annual calendar and GMTs, to avoid the troublesome to adjust them when I want to wear them, and use them as display cases as well.

I dont use winders, just manually adjust each time I wear one.
Bro meor is correct, if perpetual or annual calendar then that would be a headache
-
I dont like winder as i like setting up watches to current time no matter how complicated it could be... Having said that i do not have any GMT or any complicated function...heheheh
