Mine is from 2 major aspects. One is from the purely enjoyment to view watches as an artifact. Another is to relate watches with sweet memories.

Since I am always flipping, I always look at watches with high resale that appeals to me.

1. Anything Blue is worth buying
2. I respect 1 Brand collection more than Rojak collection. Edit: collector should put some thoughts into what they are collecting.

Still an amateur, but I value movements and the brand's history. The looks of a watch... I tend to get swayed psychologically into liking them even if I didn't like them before after I start doing some research  :P

If I like a watch (doesn't matter if quartz or mechanical) and I have some spare cash, I will buy. If the watch is a good bargain price but I am not too sure, I may buy. I will sell or trade watches once I no longer wear them as much. Better to pass on to another WIS than to hoard.

1) versatile and suit my lifestyle ( I buy watch to wear not to keep for others )

(2) must be relatively easy and reasonable to service , reliable workhouse and preferably straps of standard sizes , not too complicated

(3) preferably not more than rm25K

If I cannot afford to lose/damage it, I won't buy it.

1. Brand history and heritage
2. Technical aspects of the watch especially the movement
3. The design of the watch has to be timeless yet with a touch of modern design cues
3. How the watches sing to me

Almost the same. But at the end of the day, when purchasing a new watch I ask myself one simple question, would I wear this over any of the ones I already have. Like if I get a reverso, would I wear it over my Datejust, if yes. I'm selling the datejust for the reverso. Same goes to my speedmaster for the el primero.

It's always a question of which one sings to me more.

Preferably family owned company or independent watch manufacturer, iconic look with recognizable design.

To be able to wear the artifact and to admire it all the times is one of the  finest enjoyment in life.

My second reason always takes to me to Rojak collection.

I prefer the usual, less expensive Rolex SS models (216570, 214270, 114060). They have common qualities:

(a) They are all easy to read the time. I used to have a great chronograph from a micro-brand. But it took me a few seconds whenever I looked at the watch face to tell the time. It just drove me crazy. Easy to read is something I will no longer compromise upon.

(b) They are tough. I don't have to think twice about going running or cooking or about banging it accidentally.

(c) I can sell them and not lose too much money. (Though this is something I want to avoid at all costs because I love these watches and I didn't overpay too much for them -- getting them now would be super-expensive).

(d) They match with my overall dress style -- business casual.

The one watch that I own that is an exception to all this is my Seiko SNK809 which is super affordable. I keep this watch because I believe that the movement is made in my home town of Johor Bahru at the Epson factory in Tampoi.

I want to own a Patek split-second perpetual chronograph -- that's my grail watch. Who knows? I still have a couple decades before I die.

As long as I don't regret buying it for whatever reason so it usually takes me awhile from interest to purchase.

I am still trying to decide if I am a one-watch man or if I like a variety. Whilst I am happy that my Submariner covers most situation, I do get bored of it at times and would like to change to something more exciting but I still find it hard to convince myself to get another watch.

Nowadays, I'm more selective is buying watches. Used to collect a lot of cheap/medium range watches, but i realized that i can only wear 1 watch at a time. For me, the "wrist time" a watch will get is the most important consideration in the decesion to purchase a watch

Most of time, it is easier to dress down than to dress up a watch.

Are you a collector or enthusiast?

Buy to add to a collection? Does the collection have a theme?

Buy to wear? Do you match watch to outfit?

I would normally promote variety but I do understand that not everyone would be happy with a box of watches. It is more likely that you are a one-watch man. What you are feeling now is an itch.

Been awhile since I heard the word "itch" being used and it is truly quite appropriate for this situation.

Depending on the level and type of itch. You either make it worse and scratch until you bleed or you relieve it temporarily. Hahahaha!!!

I take it you can only tell if you try and scratch the "itch"? Read of people going down the rabbit hole when they try to scratch the itch. Is there a point of return if we start on this journey?

Only one way to find out, bro. Scratch the itch and see where it leads you.

Why do you want to crawl out if you're already down the rabbit hole? Just keep going to see where it leads you..

Was browsing MWF and got itchy on this subject. Would like to share how I ended up buying so many watches since year 2010.

Year 2010, Was on tour in Hong Kong and decided to get a souvenir. Got myself a G Shock G-7900MS. Still wearing this for sports activities. Then in 2012, got an "itch" to own an Automatic watch...Oris Watch sale at Bangsar. Drove there and got my very first automatic watch, ORIS BC3, cost me RM2,500. Luv every minute wearing it, for work and play. Still wearing it until now. have not service it since day one.....and now a bit off timed.

I longed to own a dive watch and bought one from a SG Online seller in year 2013. A SEIKO 7S26 Made in Japan and cost me RM700. I still give this watch some wrist time until today.

Then in 2016, was oversea and decided to get a cheap dress watch as souvenir, and bought a HAMILTON VIEWMATIC for RM2400.

Then my wife and my daughter told me...why are you buying so many watches for. They told me to go buy a branded and expensive watch and then I would stop buying more watches. So year 2017, I got a nice TUDOR Heritage BB Steel from a Local AD.

With this BB..they thought it can sooth my itch. However, reading MWF's postings can definitely poison me. Call my AD and  ask for ROLEX Explorer 1. My lucky day. Bought one in year 2018.

Then in year 2019 the "itch" came again. Was on tour in Swisz, Got myself a ROLEX DJ Wembley and TUDOR BB GMT....another lucky year for me to have got these two in one AD. Even the Tour Leader was stunned because many times he has been to the AD, he is unable to get these models. See, getting one expensive watch would not stop me in getting more watches.

So.... until now I don't know what philosophy or theme for my such purchases since year 2010. A mixture of itchiness and impulsive purchases perhaps....but deep down in my heart, I have always wanted to own a ROLEX.

But I know for sure, NOW I have stopped buying more watches and trying my very best to give all these watches a fair share of wrist time. But today I am back reading MWF again and hopefully the itch is contained  for now.

PS: The TUDOR BB GMT looks too big on my wrist and decided to let go, which I have mentioned in one of my posting. Still no takers. No worries.. my son is ready to wear it when the time comes.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I too started on the same year. Looking back, I can summarize that watch collecting is a very emotional hobby. Sometimes when the emotions kick in, logic flies out the window.

From your gap in purchases, I'd say the next itch should be in 2021..
