Shopping for watches in Hong Kong
« on: November 30, 2011, 09:12:33 PM »
I am planning to visit HK soon. Anybody can suggest any specific best season to shop for watches? Which area should I stay for easy and short distance to the watch shops location?

Try Nathan Road. Lots of choices there. If you are into rolexes, the shops are probably better stocked than those in KL, but lots of "grey-market products" and it will be great if you have good bargaining skills in Cantonese.

The whole of HonG Kong is like a giant watch shop. Are u looking for used or new watches?

Just a stroll down Yau-Tsim-Mong and your eyes would pop out with the number of ADs hitting all ur senses

Yau-Tsim-Mong is just the abbreviation of YauMaTei, TsimSaTsui and Mongkok. The thoroughfare that connected the 3 district is Nathan Road where you can see all the major ADs and also tons and tons of gold and diamond jewelry.

There's no sales tax in hong kong. So do not be duped by the large neon signs saying duty free in jewelry and electronic shops. Get a good bilingual map. There are tons of small roads where most shops are located and without a good map, you'll definitely be walking round and round. Ask for directions from locals by pointing to the Chinese name cause although HK is a major international shipping and financial hub, the command of English by most locals are poor. Also names in English may not correlate with their Chinese name.

Pack a good and comfortable pair of shoes! You be walking and walking and getting lost. That is part of the fun.

This is a good guide for shops in HK. Mods please delete if inappropriate

Go to TRF and search for Hong Kong and you'll get some info.

Another bargain to get in HK are cameras. Bring cash if you are planning to purchase anything in significant. After all to Chinese, cash is king and you'll be treated like one if you bring wads and wads of it for purchase.

Enjoy and have fun. I miss HK

Came back from HK 2 days ago.
Did not leave HK with a watch though... Venetian Macau took my money...
I guess I just never learn...
Anyway, discounts in HK is not that good compared to locally.
Checked out alot of new Zenith models and also Jaeger...
Lost my camera at Disneyland... haih...
All in all it's a good trip for the kids and wifey...

CK, actually not that easy if not familiar with the shop there... when you enter those use/preown shop, they doesn't seem friendly to you (at least my opinion la)... unless you really know them well... also, i worry buying in a not familiar shop (ya, i know everything has a first time) especially overseas...because in case anything happen, not easy to send it back :D

Just my feedback la... coz i thought of getting a watch when i was last visited HK back in August this year  ;) but didn't get any at the end :D hui~~

Yes I did, there were plenty along Haiphong Road and some scattered here and there.
But the thing is, they are not friendly if you dun know them well.
Hongkies have different styles, to us... it is not friendly but to them, it's normal.
Prices aren't all that enticing so it's not hard not to pull any trigger.
Before I went there, I was determined to leave HK with a watch. But when I was there, I guess it's better to buy locally... at least within Malaysia.

I agree with you Scott.

I did visit the Zenith Boutique at Causeway Bay and Panerai Boutique at the Canton Road Intersection.
At last I got to try on some PAMs... not sure of the model I tried though... did not do any research.
I just tried on 44mm and 47mm sized ones.
No 42mm in sight.
I can say that 44mm is OK for a PAM on my wrist but somehow there is no sparks yet...
So, did not pull any trigger.

I did try out one piece that really stays in my mind until now.
Nothing special if seen from pictures but when holding it at wearing it, the size, weight and look really appeal to me.
It's this one.

Retails for HKD77000.
It's now officially on my "to get list"

Yeah, I have the same feel when I tried on the Stratos Flyback... it's beautiful but too big...
It's funny just 2 years ago, I love my watches big and bold...
Now, 39mm is considered just nice and 42mm is too big... lol

yeah man..tell me about it. now i try to confine my watches to 42mm and below.

still be able to wear 42mm if it has a thick bezel and lugs which are not too extended like my 857s.

If Zenith comes with a 40mm Stratos flyback.. i'll be like fly to sh*t and head straight for that  :Laughing_on_floor:

40mm Stratos Flyback? That would make my "to get list" longer... lol
A picture to drool at.

I prefer the all black to the tri color subdial version like the New Vintage 1969.
The tri color subdial looks good only on the New Vintage IMHO.
