Would u trade a PAM312L for a used AP15300?
« on: August 03, 2010, 07:41:34 PM »
after acquiring the VC, i'm a bit stuck on the genta design.
for an entire weekend, i couldn't take my eyes off the AP.
for obvious reasons, my budget (or wife) will not permit me to go for a ROO but even if i have the money, i may not necessarily have the wrist to wear it.

due to this, i've been looking at the AP RO 15300 specifically white or black dial.
NOTE: the deal with my wife is that i can only keep 4 watches at 1 time (deal is still under negotiation), i need to sacrifice either the PAM312L or the IWC Port 371417.

so, if u were in my shoes, would u go for it?

i have listed some pros for each watch.

<AP 15300>
-very well respected brand
-1 of the original genta designs
-in house AP movement - the calibre 3120
-beautiful display back with decorated movement
-iconic octagon design - looks like most AP pieces
-can be worn on classic bracelet or converted to strap
-can be dressed down or up

<PAM 312>
-trendy brand
-classic PAM design with sandwich dial
-in house 3 day movement
-display back but WITHOUT decorations
-1950s case, but without dome crystal (unlike PAM127)
-can be worn with unlimited amounts of straps
-more of a trend piece, not able to dress up, more like a tool watch

<pictures! - all images are borrowed, thanks to the original owners of the pics>
the AP15300

the PAM312

help me decide!!!!

I have the AP RO.  It is a different watch from PAM312L so comparison is tough.  My observations on the AP RO that I own: sporty watch, not everyone likes it, classic design, hands and screws on the bezel are white gold - which is nice, watch readability is great despite in 39mm size.  So far my negative experience with AP RO are: the bezel is very susceptible to scratches.  I have the watch for about 4 months and it already has 2 very visible scratches!  The time adjustment is not very precise despite its "famous" in-house movement.  For example, when I make time adjustment but upon pressing the crown down, the minute hand moves a bit.  May be it is just happening to my watch only but may be it is the movement.

Overall AP RO is a classic sport watch.  Despite 39mm size, it is not wearing small.  I am happy with it but it is not a perfect watch!  I know there is no perfect watch but I like my Glashutte Pano and now the new IWC Port better  ;D

Yes, without batting an eyelid.

Honestly there is nothing much going on with the p9000 of the 312. Besides the AP's pre-owned price takes so much beating, you'll still have some chump change left over if you decide to change IMHO.

Go for it. Get a zero with the leftover with some top up.

Go for AP ;)

Just make sure you try first don't end up like me I can't pull the AP nicely on my wrist (the lug cant curve nicely to cover my wrist) otherwise I would have one already  :HammerHead:

Perhaps I can offer my observation here. It is based on my sub. I found that if I adjusted the time by turning anti-clockwise and pushed the crown to position 0, the minute hand will jump a "tick". However, if i had adjusted the time clockwise, the minute hand stayed when i returned the crown to position 0. I suppose there is an explanation for this for my sub and could this be the same behavior you have witnessed?

For example, when I make time adjustment but upon pressing the crown down, the minute hand moves a bit.  May be it is just happening to my watch only but may be it is the movement.

This issue is common for some movement.. but it never happen to IWC 7 days movement.. i think it's define how good a movement is being done  I do not expect this happen to some high grade movement to be honest... i do pay attention to this "behavior" when try on the watch sometimes...

if you've just gotten a black VC Chrono, then go for white RO for diversity...white also makes the watch looks bigger.i won't mount it on leather strap...original strap itself costs a bomb and it's not easy to change it. AP RO looks better on bracelet.

but i wonder...if you can pull off a pam...AP ROO should not be a prob for you..it's equally chunky

Ok I went over to AP boutique, they most colors in stock.

Tried on the RO n yes, it sits on wrist comfortably but a bit larger than expected.
The manager at the boutique said it will look much better after the bracelet softens (may doubt that), but she said it'll look a lot better on leather which they may be able to convert for me.

Hmmm, but comparing it with an offshore, WOW!
But I comfirm I m not able to pull a ROO off so a RO is my only choice if AP is the route I go with.
