Omega Speedmasters - Collectable Watches?
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:58:34 PM »
Hello Sifus,

I understand Omega Speedmasters have been around for more than 50 years.  Can you comment if these watches are collectable ( well sought after and appreciate in value ) watches.

Thanks.
Jon.

Agreed.
Modern 861 and 1861 are widely available in the market. Even the limited editions using the same 1861 movement

But then, Speedmaster with Lemania 5100 (not moon watch) ref.376.0822 is highly collectible.

Thanks sifu's for your feedbacks.

So looks like only Speedie with 321 movement & Speedie with Lemania 5100 movement are worth collecting.

Any idea about the price range for these 2 watches?

Thanks.
Jon

For first timer on speedy who actually want a 'speedy' look, a common movement will do the job. Unless you are a collector. you opt for the 321 movement like what other sifus mentioned.

Sorry to pour cold water though, its not cheap to service a speedy. For a chrono, and if one of the gear mesh goes. an entire set of gears need to replace. (not only 1 wheel gear) I, myself find out the hard way.

Speedie 3510.50.00 : ETA 2890 movement + Dubios Depraz chronograph.

I was browsing the Internet and came across this review.  The reviewer described it as 'classis muscle car'.

Personally I would stay away from the Speedmaster reduced. It's not the real deal IMHO.

Jon, speedy reduced is a nice small brother of moonwatch.
Some great write up and comparison between reduced and moonwatch here by late Chuck Maddox (I've learnt a lot from his articles)

Or why don't you consider an used speedy pro?

Again i think you are approaching this very wrongly.
Dont buy only because its "collectible" or its rare.
If you buy a watch thinking its a good investment and make you money then you better off put your money elsewhere.
You want to know what watch really increase in value?
Sell you house, look at the famous auctions and see whats on auction each time and buy something similar.

BTW the Speedy with 321 movt can reach up to rm60k.

Holy cow, again.I have lost touch here. the what? takes rm60k!

If I have that much $$, I buy me a small apartment...but thats another matter.

Normally go for the affortable ones before going for the bloke

If you want to collect collectibles make sure you hv tat kind of $$$ to pay for it and service the watch. The higher the demand, obviously, the higher the price :)
