I guess for many having a Rolex epitomizes the benchmark for being successful in life.

Well this is after all a very subjective hobby....but for me, it has got to do with a little bit of tradition i.e. my late grandfather has one, my uncle has one, my father has one, my big brother has one and me.

That's one of the worst reasons to buy one. Buyer's tastes changes. What is popular today may not be tomorrow. Ask Daytona and the 50th anniversary Sub Date buyers in the last few years. That hype is all but gone, except in Asia.

Rolex is without doubt the most recognized watch in the world, what is not so well known is that the modern Rolex is the basis of almost all modern wrist watches. The waterproof case, the self winding movement, the date window in the dial, the GMT two time zone watch and the diving watch are all Rolex inventions.

Look at their vintage sports pieces, you will be amazed by their values that keep soaring, which many brands can hardly come close. It has reached the pinnacle of the class in its league

Personally I feel that a watch collection is not complete if you don't have a Rolex in it.
There is no one single reason but a multitude of reasons like; technological advancements, emotions, branding, consistency (in quality),
all roll into one gigantic reason, which is the name ROLEX.

Admittedly, reliable movements and solid case construction are the main points Rolex has over other manufacturers. Finishing is not for sure.

Case and bracelet only bcom solid few yrs ago!
So movement reliability and gd after sales service still the key factors

Actually referring to how the oyster case can take on the daily beater use. Agree that bracelet and clasp refinements only in the last few years and this has driven the price (not necessarily the cost) up considerably.

Isnt the dayotna is the first model to have the improved rolex claps and bracelet? Took awhile for them to implement it on the rest of the range  ???

The Zenith or 4030 movement came with tuna-can type clasp. When it was released with the 4130 movement, the clasp was upgraded to the more solid type. Then somewhere as you say in V serials, it was upgraded again to the current type with different blades on the clasp. Externally, the difference can only be seen by the coronet on the double lock, where on the newer model, the coronet bottom sticks out slightly from the edge. Note that the solid gold models with leather strap still have the older type clasp and blades.

Pictures would help but I don't have any handy now.

Which rolex interest you? I was so close to getting a Subby but I didn't. I also like the 18k gmt iic.

Daytona, Explorer 2. Will maybe add a Datejust with a jubilee bracelet, a Yachtmaster (not the YM2) and a WG President in future.
