I'm sorry to have to give some history lessons but 31st August is not Malaysia's birthday. That date should be 16th September.
That's why it's called Hari Merdeka or Independence Day when the then Malaya gained independence from UK. Only recently has 16th September been declared as Hari Malaysia.
