Title: Lego anyone?
Post by: dpkong on January 20, 2014, 09:49:41 PM
I'm assuming that most everyone here are adults but is there any interest in Lego? I'm particularly interested in the Technic range.

It does seem that the Technic range is not very popular compared to Star Wars. Why is that?

Hopefully we can share the best places to get Lego in KL or from local online sellers in this thread.

It is a lot of fun building with them even now. They help by picking out parts and putting together some of the smaller Technic assemblies.

Your Star Wars collection is massive too! Over 3000 pieces for the Star Destroyer! How long is that build going to take?

Wow meo!

How is the 9395? I'm also looking for that model but prices are going up. How good is it?

And that 8294 excavator is classic. I think the design for the track is much better than the current 42006 model.

I've loved Lego since childhood but couldn't afford it. Now after buying a few small sets for the children, and with more free time, the interest is growing again.

hahah, not at the moment, probably later
24 hours was only for diehard lego fans,
probably during CNY i will assemble the ATTE that i just got recently,
need to babysit my baby, doesn't have much time

The 9395 I got it in America. Damn cheap. They have a manufacturing plant there so costs is so much lower unlike here where everything require importing.

Took me 3 full days to do it. The building plan runs into 3 booklets!!! (http://distilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com/9ba2b1bc9ea811e2ad6922000a1fa410_7.jpg)

I just finished the 42000 F1 car, also 3 booklets.
First lego technic set I bought in many many years. I bought it because I have this faint memory that 25 years ago, I had a similar lego technic car around the same size, the one with a working gearbox and suspension. That was the thing that got me fascinated with cars.

That's the first one I put together as well. Nice car but somehow a little let-down by the available functions. The rear spoiler also not well designed. I'm going to try to convert it later to a RC racer with motors, IR and remote as seen on some MOC websites.

For current sets, yeah. Prices are slightly better in Singapore, not to mention much more choice. I notice many try to import from the US or Europe. Is there tax for this?

For retired sets, prices in Malaysia are ridiculous.

Hopefully we can share where to get Lego around Malaysia.

I am sure I don't qualify to be an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego) or ALE (Adult Lego Enthusiast) - the Lego speak for such like minded people  - because I have specifically bought only 6 Lego sets for the sake of investment, and not for assembly or play:

Star Wars

1. UCS Millennium Falcon (10179) - definitely NOT a fan of Star Wars, but this particular set's investment value as in ROI has been astronomical!

Special Architecture/Sculpture Series

1. Statute of Liberty (3450)
2. Taj Mahal (10189)
3. Eiffel Tower (10181)
4. Tower Bridge (10214)
5. Sydney Harbor Bridge (10234)

I have been told by AFOLs/ALEs that they have not come across anyone else with the complete collection, as above, of the Special Architecture/Sculpture Series - by virtue of the fact that I have an ultra rare BNIB Statute of Liberty released in 2000. Even more rare is the monochromed box - not the colored version that was released later.

All the above sets are BNIB, never played or assembled - I won't know how lol.

The current street value of the above architecture/sculpture series is the full list price of Omega's DSOTM lol. The book value's about the price of a second hand cheapest Seiko Tuna.

If anyone care to trawl around Lego forums, you'll discover retired and rare Lego sets make great investments!

To be a sound investment, a Lego set has to satisfy the following conditions:

1. BNIB - internals never opened, sighted lol
2. Box condition (preferably with outer cardbox) should be with minimal or zero creases, dings, dents, and minimal discoloration
3. Completeness - manuals, certificates, factory material etc must be intact

And Yes:
1. You can't buy them in Msia - many Lego shops will just give you a blank stare
2. You can't FeDex them - fragile, huge box will dent or break (few thousand pieces in box) thus losing ROI value

And No:
1. Your kids must NOT know they exist - all hell will break lose if they do lol

LEGO is no fun if you don't rip open the box and assemble it...  :Blue:

Did this Lego Creator plane a few months ago.

The cockpit canopy can be opened. The back canopy slides back.

The propeller moves.

You can push the tail tires back and forth and it will move gears that rotates the propellers. The main tires on the wings can be folded into the wings using an ingenious mechanism.

The flaps on the wings can also move up and down.

You can open the engine compartment and see the gears at work.

If you guys have time, you can visit Legoland in Johor. I have a  annual pass and the shop inside there carries all range of Lego availble at distributor prices. If u want special ones can order there oso. Malaysians get RM30 discount on entrance ticket. Great park for kids and adults alike.

Yeah... I agree with dpkong... my friend told me the lego sets there are more or less the same price as outside retailers.
You sure about the distributor price part?

I usually disregard the age group which Lego classify its various set pieces. Sometimes my kids scold me for buying something that is way below  my age group (I don't think Lego makes sometime for the 45 -50 years old kid!!!) In this case this particular, I just happen to like the set, even if it was designated for the 8 - 12.

Lego is universal  :Dancing_banana:

Dunno le, i mean the prices are cheaper than i see in departmental stores in JB. Plus they have sales always. Might not be distributor prices la.

For lowest prices particularly for popular new releases, retired sets, large sets and collector's editions, Spore's the best.

Some of the private and online sellers are pilots, flight attendants who use their free cargo allowances to bring in the latest releases and the much demanded sets (and watches of course). The only snag is that you need to COD at their Spore addresses. For the more expensive sets,  they don't and won't despatch to avoid disputes over loss, damage etc. But man, if like me you like to bitch over box condition, content completeness, they're the guys!

Is there a specific marketplace for this?

Title: Re: Lego anyone?
Post by: 2ndOpinion on February 08, 2014, 06:57:27 AM
eBay Spore would be a good start. Lego forums or dedicated Lego discussion threads by private sellers/collectors such as those in hardwarezone.sg.com  is another followed by authorized Lego distributors with online presence. The latter's prices are like 5% to 10% higher than the private sellers but still lower than Msian prices even post GST.

Spore's a huge market for Lego because many tourists and overseas visitors routinely buy for kids or for their own collection on trips there apart from a very enthusiastic local market. So at any one time Spore has the "latest and greatest" Lego sets - including watches as per my earlier thread.

If one's already in LegoLand, one might as well take a 30 to 45 mins drive to downtown Spore for a Lego buying spree or even a group buy. Private sellers' prices are very negotiable, and the condition of the sets and content completeness are amazing as most of them are AFOL/ALE themselves.

Lego as a hobby in Msia is unnecessarily expensive. And just wait for our killjoy 6% GST lol.

Yes. It is the 42009. I got it from a local toy store selling LEGO. It was sitting there for ages. The price tag must have put many off. I have seen a few sellers selling on Mudah for RM790 or so. If you want, I might have another one on order from a KL seller which you can have.

Hope you enjoy it! Didn't go to too much trouble to collect it I hope!

Hint:  The main chassis is tricky. Check and recheck all gears run smoothly or else the outriggers will be very hard to extend/retract and the jacks will be hard to operate. Or maybe I built mine too fast  ???

I'm going to get some extra parts and mod my own 42009 and make it fully RC..

Anyway realised that this model, with over 2600 parts, it is the largest LEGO Technic set released so far. This model is designed by one of the most known LEGO Technic designers, Markus Kossman.
