Title: Buying an Automatic Diver with RM10,000 budget
Post by: Davidkhoo17 on January 14, 2018, 10:23:11 PM
Hi MWF,

I am currently hunting for my first automatic watch and my budget is capped at RM10,000.

The following are the shortlisted options of new / unworn watches which caught my attention:

Prior to my hunt, I have visited local ADs and did online researches on the shortlisted watches.

And here I am now, seeking advice / suggestions / recommendations from MWF Sifu & members on which automatic diver should I purchase.

You may also suggest pre-owned watches as alternatives to the above.

Your assistance is much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Tudor black Bay or stretch it out to a pelagos. Pre owned

for 10 k budget, there would more more option than the 4 listed if you willing to stretch your budget a little bit more

tudor bb, pelagos as stated by sifu is those within the range

or Omega PO and Panerai base model (pre-own) should be slightly over in this range

Is an Oris Big Crown ProPilot Altimeter RM10k?

This is an aviation model, no? TS seems to be focusing on the diver genre. Perhaps over-looked, but the newly-released Seiko SLA017 may be a good choice too. Heritage re-released, with a healthy dosage of discount from its RRP these days.

1. MMT500 - O.P.V. Marina Militare (brand new piece about RM 5200)
2. Seiko MarineMaster 300m (brand new piece about RM 9500)
3. Preowned Tudor Pelagos or Black Bay about RM 10000
4. Squale Matic 600m or Tiger 300m with Bezel lock about RM 5100 for brand new piece.

Obviously,  your budget is already past the range of those four watches you mention above. Explore more. Get out from comfort zone.  you almost there for better choice etc: Tudor BB  Omega, B&R 03-92 diver. I've been there and done that.

If getting a new timepiece, I'll go with the sixty-five diver. If preowned, Tudor Black Bay. Or stretch a little more to Omega Seamaster.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions MWF Sifus.

For now, the Oris Divers Sixty-Five & Longines HydroConquest are leading the race in the poll.

It is true that the divers in the poll are below RM10,000 but this is the max budget I can stretch.

I also appreciate your suggestions to go for better quality pre-owned options like Omega, Tudor, BR, Squale & Seiko MarineMaster.

To be honest, Omega Seamaster & Tudor Pelagos are my dream watches.

Not sure if I can find a Seamaster or a Tudor BB/Pelagos around my budget but I will explore the pre-owned options.

If any Sifu can recommend / share any good websites or ADs to look for pre-owned watches, it will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi There !

Welcome into the world of watches !

Just my 2 cents.. as many sifus around says, buy what makes u smile and happy !

In the poll given by your goodself, the oris diver 65 has richest and most appealing history to me and it will be an easier sale in the future should you decided to upgrade.

Nontheless, another option you have is to save up a little longer and go for your dream watch ! A used pelagos is just slightly more than your budget and a brand new one isn't that far away either !

Good luck with your hunt !

The SLA 017s have gone crazy expensive these days, going well above RM13.5K. Although it’s a really cool watch, I wouldn’t wanna pay that kind of money for an 8L movement. I agree with cocas and would happily recommend the SBDX017 Marine Master300.

Thanks for your feedback Sifus.

I have expanded my option to pre-owned watches as per the suggestions.

Tudor Black Bay 36mm , 2 years ago was about RM9k plus. If still at this price, Tudor has better resale value

Not sure if there'll be anyone who agrees with me but with that kind of budget I'll go for a Seiko diver (SKX007 or Seiko Turtle are great options) and a pre-owned Rolex (like a 6694).
Seiko diver for your rough wear and a 6694 with leather strap as your dress watch.

You'll get 2 amazing watches with change to spare.

But if you're set on a new swiss made diver, Oris 65 will be my pick.

Longines gets my vote, perhaps add in Ball diver for your consideration.

Thanks again for the feedback MWF Sifus.

I am surprised the Oris Aquis has zero votes after reading and watching good reviews about it.

If I am not wrong, TAG Heuer Aquaracer has a better one with Ceramic bezel, apart from Tudor Pelagos.
If you think it is a plus.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did thought of the new BR Diver, it's a great watch but my budget cannot stretch to that level.

This is an update on my hunt: After much consideration and asking around, I purchased a pre-owned Omega Seamaster.

Thank you MWF Sifus for your suggestions and for opening my eyes to pre-owned watches.

The bracelet itself is a hefty piece. Previously, I usually wear rubber straps on my watches. So you can imagine the transition to this bracelet.

It is a love / hate thing and it is highly debated across forums. However, I like how it looks as well as the weight and feel to it.
