Between ETA 2834 & Caliber 4R36
« on: November 16, 2012, 03:19:23 PM »
Hi Guys,

Would like to get some opinion from you all.

I am considering between ETA 2834 engine or Seiko Caliber 4R36 in my next purchase.

The ETA 2834 is installed in a Hamilton Khaki Scuba
RM15xx region

The Caliber 4R36 is installed in SRP313K1 Seiko New Monster
< RM 1000 region

Which will be a better choice in terms of technology and value for $$. Your advice is very much appreciated.
TQ

Seikos are one of my fav brands but you must compare apple to apple.

At the same price points I would say Seiko gives you more value in terms of movt design and quality.
But I'd be the first to tell you that Swiss/German watch case/dial designs usually look nicer.

I don't think your price points are accurate.

The 4R36 is a hit and miss affair meaning you can get very accurate specimens but also  bad copies at + 20secs/day too. The 6R21 calibres are much better with longer PR and closer to ETA ebauche accuracy. Incidentally I just bought the Monster Dracula SRP313K1 a few weeks back, the very same one you posted the pic of. I'm still monitoring its accuracy.

I would think you need to compare the 6R21 vs the ETA 2824 or 2892.

My Seiko Cal 6S37 column wheel chrono is miles better than any Vj 7750 I ever owned.

Personal taste and preferences evolve over years, hopefully not 1 full circle otherwise it means we haven't learnt a single thing.

I guess the comparison which you seek to make is rather complicated. The movement of the watch (though very important) is only one of the many factors one considers when choosing the watch. Years ago, I was advised, never buy a watch solely because you like the movement / the movement is great. You need to consider the entire package.

The comparison you seek to make will probably be more meaningful if you are comparing 2 watches which are exactly the same in all respects except that each has different movement. For example, a Zeno (explorer 1 homage) with a miyota movement vs. one with an ETA movement.

The ETA 2834 is a rather old and established movement. You find them in Titoni Cosmo Kings, Bulova, Pagol and many other "Rolex Day-Date homage watches". The movement is fairly accurate, 25J, runs at 28.8k bph with power reserve of approx 40hrs. I believe the seiko 4r36 is a rather new movement. But that should not be a worry as it carries the seiko name and warranty!!! The 4R36 has 24J, runs at a moderate 21.6k bph, power reserve is also approx 40 hrs like the older 7S26/7S36.

Overall, I'll go for the ETA 2834...

Hope the above helps....

If you don't have one already, I'd say go for the Seiko Monster. All collections need a monster.

Thanks all for the valuable inputs.

The reason I am comparing a seiko is that I would like to try out japanese engine.

I already have 2 ETA (2893-2 & 2836-2) and when I was looking at this New Monster...the movement of the second hand seems similar to ETA.

That's why feel like getting some opinions from watch lovers
