The final part of a 5-part Special Edition series on Jaeger-LeCoultre called The Watchmaker's Watchmaker. This mechanical marvel is not a watch, but a timepiece that comes close to the engineering grail of designing a perpetual machine.

The JLC Atmos, a clock that has enough power to run for 2 days with just a single degree in temperature change.

I think you missed the Polaris series.

You have the Memovox, but not the general Polaris line.

I think you missed the Polaris series.

You have the Memovox, but not the general Polaris line.
My personal opinion is that in terms of watches that are iconic to JLC, the Memovox stands way higher up than the Polaris which went into a long hiatus before only recently being revived in 2018 as a full line.

The Polaris is also a very confusing watch series as it is arguably a super compressor design (which historically was designed for dive watches) but JLC now markets it primarily as a 3 hand version that only has 100m WR. Then there is a chronograph version, and even a world time.

So with all due respect bro iffy38, it was a fully conscious decision for me to omit Polaris and instead just opt mention the Polaris Memovox as the most prominent link back to JLC’s alarm watch heritage and it’s watermark moment of them designing the worlds first underwater alarm in the form of the JLC Deep Sea Memovox.

A writer has got to take discretion with these things :) and so on that note, I politely disagree with your suggestion that I missed something :)

The third of a 3-part Breitling series.

The Breitling Emergency.

Some may argue that the new Breitling Premier Series is worth a mention - I think it does but I do think it needs time to establish as a new product line. However if there’s interest I could quickly do a bonus write up for Christmas.

Chime in your thoughts!

The first of a 2-part Zenith series.

We kick off with a watch that has arguably one of the most endearing and against-the-odds stories of all time.

The second of a 2-part Zenith series.

The watch I opine best encapsulates Zenith's future than being stuck in the past.

Happy 2019!

Given it’s a new year, am experimenting with new content formats. Will now dive a little deeper into specific timepieces of which I have  opportunities to personally photograph and provide further trivia and insights where possible. The Ones To Watch Series will make its return soon.

For the first piece of Visual Insights:
Speedmaster Professional - The Case for Hesalite

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsGRT8JH8vh/

Hesalite is a form of acrylic (yes, plastic) that Omega uses for the Moonwatch. It remained NASA's choice of crystal even with the invention of sapphire, years after the original moon-landing due to its unique property of not shattering on impact. Sapphire, although very scratch-resistant, can shatter into tiny shards. If you've watched the movie Gravity, I want you to imagine what tiny glass shards will do in space to all kinds of sensitive equipment. In short - disaster. It was thus a no-brainer from NASA's end to choose an acrylic crystal.

The downside of Hesalite is that it is easy to scratch. Having said that, there are owners which like the 'battle scars' accumulated over years of use. Others may even enjoy buffing their scuffs out with Polywatch. As for me, I like that it makes reference to the original Moonwatch in as close a form as possible. Thus, I will take the purist stance that the Moonwatch should always be a Hesalite crystal watch. What about you?

Omega Speedmaster Professional: Hesalite's Visual Treats:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsLcI2cHkDL/

In my previous post I talked about the reason NASA chose Hesalite for the Speedmaster crystal. Now I'd cover two more points of interest about the Hesalite Moonwatch.

1) Hesalite plays and distorts light in a very unique way. If you like the vintage appeal of old watches, the Hesalite is the way to go. Note the distortion at the near end of the photo. Try as it may, the Sapphire crystal does not truly re-create this visual effect. In fact, if you happen see a Sapphire Moonwatch, look out for the milky halo ring on the inner bezel that the Hesalite version does not have. Once you see it, there's no unseeing it. You have been warned.

2) There is a small laser-etched Omega Logo at the center of the Hesalite crystal. I've taken this photo to reveal this little detail. It's not very visible to the naked eye, but it's nice that it's there. Furthermore, it is in a location that gets masked when you're viewing it to read the time. Sadly, no such Easter Egg on the Sapphire Moonwatch.

So, still voting for the Sapphire Moonwatch?

Mythbusting The Moonwatch's Official Specifications

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsQvjkQHcl4/

The Moonwatch is a timepiece that has crown-guards. To understand why they're there, you'd need to rewind to the pre-Moon-landing days, after Omega's Speedmaster had been selected by NASA to be the official watch for their space missions. NASA found that their astronauts were bending the chronograph pushers in use during training under simulated space environments. Omega thus incorporated the guards to prevent such damage. If you are being pedantic, the Moonwatch's crown-guards might as well have been called 'chrono-pusher-guards'.

Then there's the bit about Omega's official specifications reading 42mm. One thing a lot of online reviewers get wrong is that they dismiss the Moonwatch as ill-suited for small wrists given these measurements. In fact, the actual dial diameter up to the tachymeter bezel is only 39.7mm. The additional 2.3mm accounts for the mentioned crown-guards. As such, if you compare to the crown-guard-less First Omega In Space (FOIS), Omega officially records the FOIS as a 39.7mm watch. It is not a coincidence - the FOIS is in all respects exactly the same size bezel-to-bezel as the Moonwatch.

So the next time you see a 42mm Moonwatch, remember that its real dial diameter excluding crown-guard is 39.7mm. As for the 44.25mm Ceramic Speedmasters... yes, you guessed it, that is a 42mm watch with a 2.3mm crown-guard. Mythbusted!

Omega Speedmaster Professional - The Caseback Debate:

https://instagram.com/p/BsVt5yGnx-R/

All mechanical watches have casebacks that fall into 1 of 3 categories:
(1) An exhibition caseback, which enables you to appreciate the movement but normally with reduced water resistance as a compromise;
(2) A sealed but engraved caseback, usually of some symbolic reference;
(3) A plain un-decorated caseback - a sign of pure laziness and cost-cutting by 1-2 very well-known brands whom I shall not name. Only fanboys will disagree.

The toss-up between (1) and (2) is part of the perennial debate of Moonwatch owners. The purist will opt for the sealed engraved caseback, as it pays homage to the version of the watch that remains till today, the only watch flight-qualified by NASA (PS: No shatter-able sapphire allowed).

Trivia: The Hippocampus logo engraving you see was initially designed for the Seamaster to symbolise diving and ocean heritage. It was also said to be inspired by the Venetian imagery of the seahorses that powered the chariot of Neptune, the Roman God of the Sea. This emblem eventually became consistent across all Omega's professional tool watches including the Speedmaster.

As an appreciator of visible movements, I would have to say my ultimate preference is the Ref 3572.50 aka "Hesalite Sandwich", a version that has a Hesalite Crystal AND a Sapphire caseback. Yes, I admit - I copped out!

The WatchAddictWT SIHH2019 Awards:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BsseVu8Hl0w/

After following the coverage by the prominent industry journalists, I am taking the opportunity to summarize the Best of SIHH 2019 with a mainstream brand focus. I hereby present to you 4 Awards:

1) Best Showcase of Mechanical Watchmaking Award:
JLC Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel
Rationale: It is a constant-force Gyrotourbillon, a minute repeater (with Westminster chiming), and a perpetual calendar that can be set forwards and backwards, all in a 43mm case that's thinner than an ETA7750 based watch. The dial too is a showcase of in-house craftsmanship. This is JLC showing off what it can do just because it can. The holy trinity has just been reminded why JLC is the Watchmaker's Watchmaker.

2) Best Mass Consumer Appeal Award:
IWC Pilot Spitfire
Rationale: IWC finally did it. For the most basic Pilot Spitfire, the modestly sized 39mm dial now has a date window that is well balanced to the hour arabic numerals unlike the Mark XVIII. It also boasts a new in-house workhorse movement to match, and is priced competitively with its peers in the mainstream, affordable luxury segment. Top it all off in bronze and we've got a winner.

3) Best Sleeper Hit Award:
AP Royal Oak Chrono 38mm
Rationale: What's so great about another Royal Oak, you say? AP had no reason to make this watch. It was previously a 41mm timepiece that sold well. But now AP has essentially made a brand new case that's 10% smaller and still houses the exact same legendary Frédéric Piguet movement and specifications. Small wrists around the world rejoice - you now have an iconic chronograph by a trinity brand that can be procured at the same price as a pre-owned current year Rolex Daytona.

4) Best Controversy Award:
AP CODE 11:59
Rationale: What can I say that has not already been said. If AP was looking for a media-storm, they got it. We might as well call this the AP Polarizer. I will reiterate again, I applaud AP for the admirable attempt at something new. For all intents and purposes the case and crystal show it. It's just that the dial doesn't. But the foundations are there. I think if AP persists and does a Dial V2.0 in the next year, opinions may just swing back to positive.
