JLC vs. IWC vs. Glashutte
« on: August 12, 2013, 08:25:46 AM »
Hi all! From your own perspective, which watch would you go for and what is the reason behind your choice? Both watches are within the same price band. Please feel free to offer an alternative if you could think of one.

I now present:
The IWC Portofino 8 days hand wound with a novel 8D power reserve.

The JLC Grande Reverso Duo with 2 dials driven by the same movement.
Recto:

Verso:

Reverso for me. I find it more pleasing to look at!

i love the 8 days, but in this case i'd go for reverso, reason why? because the JLC DNA on reverso is too strong  ;D

I too chose the reverso. The layout of this reverso dial is more symmetrical. Although I like the IWC Portofino 8 days (especially the one with blue dial) I do not find the movement too appealing.  ;D

In this case, I would go for the JLC Reverso as well.
The overall package is just much more pleasing.

Two different watch. Hard to compare which is better. Do you own any other model of either brand?

Will choose the JLC over IWC given its heritage and the iconic case design. I especially like the blue dial boutique version which cost the same as the standard version. However, the Santoni leather on the IWC looks particularly classy, but the topic here is on watch not strap.

Just based purely on your shortlist i will say JLC.
Iconic look, to me one of the must haves.

But like Tyler said, unless you can tell us besides price what other criteria you are looking at in a watch, if not hard to really pin point.

I was just handling that very JLC reverso last week at a boutique and I must say it is quite impressive (coming from an IWC fan here and I own that very 8 days Portofino too).

I agree with Godzillaz that these are 2 very different watches and you are really comparing durian and rambutan here. One of the reason I went for the Port 8 days was because I never have the liking for rectangular-like watch case, and that's really it. You really need to try it on an let us know what you feel about them.

Anyway, here's my bias opinion: Go for the IWC Portofino 8 days, it makes a better statement, unique, and carries much more character, great for formal and casual wear, durable and very stable movement, makes head turn everytime. It may not be as 'fine' as the JLC reverso and cannot match the quality pedigree of movement, but heck, it makes a louder statement and has lot more fun-factor IMO. It's a good balance of a not too bad manufacturer movement and great visual impression and aesthetic. Just my dua sen...

I find myself can't wear rectangular or square watches well. I will prefer round shape watches though they are ubiquitous

Thanks for all the feedback guys! It is very much appreciated.  My watch collection is mainly of the "sporty" variety with my dressiest watch being the speedy Pro! Hence, I am looking for a slightly more elegant watch that I could wear for more formal events but could also look good with casual wear.  That is the reason why I shortlisted these 2 watches as they are not overly dressy like a PP Calatrava.  My heart is with the Reverso as it is an iconic design by a respected Manufacture but I do like the IWC Portofino as I think it looks great on my wrist.   :) The santoni leather strap is pretty awesome too. I have tried both watches but still unable to decide which one to go for.  I am leaning towards the JLC for now.  ;D

I prefer the JLC but I wouldn't consider it a versatile watch to wear with casual clothes (compared to, say, your Speedie.

+1 , IWC for me on this one . (I am a JLC fanboi btw)

My opinion is going to be really weird ..
What i don't quite like about the reverso , is this - i don't really know when to wear it?
Not power enough to be a daily watch (in my line of work) . I pick a Rolex or AP as daily wear anyday.
At the same time , i think that there are nicer watches to wear with a suit for formal occasions . (A white dial , with moonphase Chrono complications for example)
So the only time i will wear a reverso is a weekend casual lunch? and maybe going to Church

My brother has a reverso and sort of like came to a similar sentiment...

He's telling me now he's eyeing on the IWC Pilot Watches....

Haha. The IWC is indeed picking up momentum.  :) Just to add to my headache, I seem to have developed a liking for the Glashutte Pano collection as well.  ???
The Panoinverse XL

The Panomaticlunar
