Title: Lexus CT200h or Golf TSI ?
Post by: Alvin-8880 on September 02, 2011, 10:17:40 PM
Dear All Forumers,

This has been a tough decision for me beside choosing watches  ;D

Anyone of u mind to share your experience if u own any of the above? What are the pros & cons, and notes worth taking as a owner? The CT200h is RM 10k more than the Golf TSI OTR. Note that it is a Hybrid thus exempted from Import & Excise duties. Thx All.

These are two different cars.  You should choose one based on what your needs.  One is a hybrid car with very low power, good brand name/image and possibly slightly bigger space than the VW.  If you are one who want to save the environment and want something different, get the Lexus.  Knowing Lexus, I am sure the build quality will be good but prepare to pay for the long term service cost as there will be no one who can service this car except Lexus itself.

The VW is a much more fun car with almost 160 HP twin turbo engine.  It is the next best thing to GTI.  The DSG gear box is fantastic.  With a little tuning, it can even whack a 325i.  The issuer for VW is there are too many Golf out there.  I would prefer the Scirocco.  In term of driving fun, there is no comparison.  It is a driver's car.

If you want a boring car, good for environment and have your friend think that are are richer than you actually are, get the Lexus.  If you enjoy driving, a fantastic gear box and can chase down a BMW or MB, get the Golf.

Peanut is correct

I tried both. The Lexus was under powered to me. It uses the same engine as the the prius. So me and the missus concluded same car but with a much better interior. Also there are 2 specs for the Lexus, the lower one is rather low as compared to the higher spec.

Now the Golf is another story :) In fact as mentioned they are 2 different cars and even the sales person didn't want to compare as they are 2 different cars. More power, fun to drive, responsive and sexy! Not that small to me and built was good. Interior was nice as well.

You can guess which we chose :)

To me, an underpowered car cannot be a driving pleasure. However, I can understand someone else may derive a lot of pleasure driving a comfortable car lumbering around in it's anemic power.  Driving pleasure is about how a car handles from the superb transmission, suspension and power plant.

Post by: Alvin-8880 on September 03, 2011, 11:36:05 PM
Thx all for the precious opinions.

I do agree Golf is a better driver's car whereas CT200h is perhaps more comfortable & luxury. Seriously, if not because of the duty exemption of around RM30k-40k, choosing the Golf would be no brainer.

Still tough choice though... ???
Title: Re: Lexus CT200h or Golf TSI ?
Post by: peanut on September 04, 2011, 08:10:48 PM
IMHO You should compare the actual selling price and the fact that Lexus has RM30-40k exemption tax should be irrelevant in your decision.  Since they are in the same price range, you should evaluate them using your criteria but not factoring how much you "save" on the exemption tax or the original Lexus price should be higher.

Like most people said, these are apple and orange.  The fact that you are considering them together makes me wonder if you are clear about your needs.  This is like I will never consider a 7 series versus a Nissan GTR!  ;D

Everybody have different perspective on certain things, Yes, you may view Driving pleasure as to certain aspect. However, I view differently for the term "Driving Pleasure". If I were 20 years old younger, I would have go with Golf.  ;D

Just my 18 cents....

Hi All,

I will be there for sure, it is just 3 minutes drive from my house.  ;D

We should meet there with our watches, but what to wear, like what Siodee asked? Most of my watches are for diver or flyer. How come I don't even have a racer watch?  ???

Straight forward -
Family man - Lexus, give u comfort and spacious enuf and environmental friendly..
Single or normally travel alone - Golf, more power, good handling, more cool etc..
For me - I'm a family man + environmental friendly ( = GOOD MAN ) lol..so it's Lexus

Lexus for me - as it states my view about the protection of the enviroment. However, my financial training dictates that i should go for the VW. The cost of the Lexus has been inflated by the technology used. Taking into consideration depreciation etc, VW wins.

Golf tsi would no doubt be more fun to drive. Ct200h however would be more of a novelty as there's not many on the road. Why not you consider getting both?  :Laughing_on_floor:

Post by: Alvin-8880 on September 15, 2011, 05:36:24 PM
Yes, I have booked the CT200h but it will only arrived by Nov'11.

My reason :
- The look strikes me at 1st sight. Golf looks too simple for me though it has been my dream car.
- Lexus looks more "business" than Golf, I'm a sales personnel, it suits my job.
- I'm driving an old 325i (E36), though a fun car but too much maintenance for our weather. I strongly believe Japanese cars are more reliable in tropical weather.

However, if there is a better choice, say, new Camry launched earlier than expected, delay in delivery or cancellation of duty exemption etc., I might cancel the order & loose RM 1k deposit (refund 90%).

I suspect with the intro of Proton Hybrid today, Govt might protect local hybrid & impose duty again on imported Hybrid.

Anyway, the time will tell if my decision was right...

Congrats Alvin

We got the Golf as you would imagine although I have never driven it  :Laughing_on_floor:, the missus says that it rocks and being in sales too, she gets from A to B rather fast (although, I try not to hear that bit )

Good luck with the wait and tell us how it goes...I did try the Lexus too but we decided on the Golf...very posh and plush interiors Lexus

Thx Gapper & Sid.

IS250 is cool too according to my friend. It shares many Toyota parts in the engine bay, which is good. The key differences are better materials, design, refinement & built it has over Toyota interior & exterior.

No doubt Germany cars are great, but after owing my 325i for 10 years, I have started to appreciate Japanese reliability long ago. The high temperature & pressure (hence better performance) applied on Germany engines is the killer in tropical weather.

I have been owning bimmers as long as I can remember.  May be it was true donkeys years ago but it is not true now or even 10 years ago.  I don't buy the German cars not suitable for tropical weather nonsense.  Nowadays all the cars are manufactured for global market.  The difference is German cars may be more performance oriented than Japanese cars at the same price point.  I can tell you that the GTR and Evo are also not cheap to maintain!

Lexus is known for reliability and well engineered.  But unless you go for the high end Lexus, the driving experience is still not the same as bimmers.

Discount on Lexus? Only in your dream ! ;D

I've been asking before taking delivery of my car, cos Prius is offering 5-year free maintenance. But zero offer on CT200h. I heard they delivered 500 units within last 3 months. Hybrid is getting popular now.

Nearly cancel order and went for Golf TSI due to RM16k discount. But that discount drop to only 10k. So, finally stick to CT200h.

Hi

I have similar dilema. Was comparing CT200 vs Jetta vs Passat vs Mazda 6. Didnt even bother comparing with Golf TSI.

Ended up with CT200h..... due to its refinement and air of luxury. And also the entire buying experience.

Just think of it this way.
CT200h = Rolex
Jetta/Passat = Laco/Steinhart
Mazda = Seiko (or grand Seiko if you wish)

Imagine all same price. So its easy pick for me.

No offence to VW owner yah.

I too considered Golf TSI, Jetta & Passat before settling down with CT200h due to the technology (green) & luxury feel. But all these features cost money, so, the final factor is "tax free". Else, not easy too justify the saving of fuel. Am running at 5 liter/100 km (or less than 10 sens / km).

Klang Valley traffic jam every where, even at taman-taman now. Hybrid is the "best suited" cars for city life. The engine hardly starts, so will be less wear & tear. I strongly believe Hybrid cars are more reliable overall in city.

Can't accept the Golf TSI & Jetta come without leather seats & plain dashboard. CT200h wins hands down.

Hi Chrisyen

True true... G Seiko

Hi Alvin

Agree. My final reason is "I ain't want pay ridiculous taxes anymore" although everything is expensive. Just did my 10K service at Rm500! No free labour or anything. How about yours?

For those who consider GTi, do take a look at Mazda 3 MPS also. At Rm17+k, Japan CBU, 2.3l Turbo with 10 Bose Speaker audio, it really worth considering eventhough there are complains about torque steer.

Thanks

I have not done 10,000 km service yet but my friend did, RM500 too.

Having tax free car in Malaysia is like in a dream, when all cars are taxed minimum 30-40% including Proton made. Worse on imported brands : AP, Import Duty, Excise Duty, Sales Tax.  :Blue:

Just came back from Bangkok last month and found out that their Japanese cars are cheaper than Malaysia by 20 to 40%.

I read it too but found the choice of "battle field" was not quite fair. Having CT200h vs Passat competing on PLUS highway will not favour any hybrid cars as they are designed for city traffic ie. stop-go scenario.

how about the new Honda CR-Z hybrid ??  ;D
i think is a fair comparison to the Lexus, but it is only a 2+2 seater which means rear seats are only for show  :Blue:
at 115k i think is a bargain to the not-so-exciting Prius + it's a manual !  ;)

I like both Never driven the Lexus but my sis inlaw has one and gotten a ride a couple of times.. very comfy and if your taking a long drive its nice to know that it wont cost much... golfs are just plain fun to drive but one needs snow to really get the best out of them

Lexus Cars are made to perfection , Lexus sales  are at the top range in the states , If you own one,  comparing it with a German Car there is no doubt german technology is better ,  But then if you drive a lexus its all about the branding and also the taste you have. I personally love the lexus for comfort and style . if i want speed and performance  i will just take the BM or the Audi out for a spin comparing german and a japanese car.

Just my 2 cents

Stan

Hi

I have similar dilema. Was comparing CT200 vs Jetta vs Passat vs Mazda 6. Didnt even bother comparing with Golf TSI.

Ended up with CT200h..... due to its refinement and air of luxury. And also the entire buying experience.

Just think of it this way.
CT200h = Rolex
Jetta/Passat = Laco/Steinhart
Mazda = Seiko (or grand Seiko if you wish)

Imagine all same price. So its easy pick for me.

No offence to VW owner yah.

Congrats on your choice.

For me, if I were to choose performance, I will go for the Passat.
Even though it may be 1.8cc as compared with CT200 which is 2.0cc, but feel more powerful as it's engine is turbo-powered.

CT200 is 1.8L only.

Exact same engine as Prius.

And also, CT200h is nimble (as in all hybrid i guess) due to the electric motor being the first power source, the torque is instantneous. However, it run out of stim rather quick but then I did hit 180km/h once in while. All in, it is fun to drive especially when I sneak up to pedestrain who dont hear me coming :-)

I' d got for the Golf. The back seat of the lexus is awfully cramp in leg space plus the boot is too small. The Golf with the Tsi engine is super smooth and light on the pedal.

For me, I will go for CT200.. Because of space of car & also better fuel consumption.
