Let's see how long it lasts.

I noticed price at my dealer have dropped by about 10% particularly for the steel GMT models and Subs. The Daytonas are still going up. Skydweller (only blue) too.

I have been a serial flipper and buy in bundle deals to get the sports pieces. It's hard to get sports pieces from ADs here in Malaysia, never mind the premium. When I began the hobby many years back, I've heard the same o' "Rolex bubble will pop, wait till price drop to buy." but one could see the sports pieces' real world pricing climbing higher and higher. The only Rolex pieces that you could buy cheap (and I use the term loosely) are dress watches e.g. Day-Date and Datejust, and sports pieces e.g. Explorer and Milgauss, to an extent. Or pick them up from the secondary market and these examples would be even much more discounted, especially now that 2019 saw newer movements fitted for the DJ36.

Sports pieces are a different ballgame altogether. Once discontinued, the prices go mad. I remembered flipping many pieces of Batman last year (have to check my blog to be certain, but it was a couple of pieces every other month) and prices were circa RM40k+ each. Just the other day, a collector whom took 2 pieces (1 to wear and 1 to keep for his son), told me that a grey reseller offered a very high trade-in for the unused, unnamed and undated piece he took from me. He flipped it for an AP; and a subsequent listing came up at RM70k thereafter. I thought that was too high a sale price from the grey reseller, but it was sold in a flash!

So if you want to have your cake and eat it too, go for the Rolex sports pieces. You get to wear it; and then when you get bored of the piece some time down the road, sell it to cover your cost or even make some profit thereafter. Or better still, just put it into the safe and wait for it to appreciate higher.

There's always an alternative of course. Just go for other brands. Omega has the Seamaster 300 and Planet Ocean, and these go for great discounts in the market. If you don't limit yourself to a Rolex on your wrist, there are way more bargains out there in the market.

Some excellent points. Which other brands/models would you recommend besides Rolex? You mentioned Omega Seamaster 300 and Planet Ocean, any others?

Well, I started off as a collector before I found a network of ADs whom could work with me to get the Rolex sports pieces, so I see it as bringing in pieces for local collectors whom couldn't get their hands on these pieces despite years in the waiting list.

As a personal collector, if I want watches at a good discount, I would look at Omega (their Speedmaster LE collection commands good premium but not their diver watches), Bell and Ross, Grand Seiko/Seiko, Oris, and microbrands. Seiko especially, opens up another world to me as it introduced me to the modding world and led me to my own customised production of limited production watches these days. Just pop by Andywristwatches and you would get the picture.

Very insightful thoughts, in fact, i've been following your posts here. You were selling Rolex Batman at RM40-42k early last year, and i thought it was on the high side, i was wrong, fast forward, the price had shot up. I'm lucky to settle for RM50k++ preowned this year. What are the Rolex Sports you're keeping?

I keep all the sports models that I wear myself, except the DSSD (which I found too much to be a walking billboard, then again could be just sour grapes that it wears me instead of me wearing it). And a couple of DD and DJ. And this fave piece that was the best of both worlds, usable for both sports and dress occasions- indeed why should only the ladies get all the blings?  ;D

Hi there, I am just curious what are the "bundle watches" you usually get in order to qualify yourself for a sport rolex purchase from the ADs?

I've heard from people that you may need to spend up to RM100k for you to be entitled in VIP list, that will qualify for sports watch allocation such as explorer ii, sub no date. Not sure how true?

Prices for sports Rolexs have been increasing over the last 2 years. Waiting list is crazy unless you know an AD. The curve is going up steadily. Grey market sells at double the AD prices.

Rolex sports model prices wont go down anytime soon at all. Just a slight price adjustment during every year of this time so called holiday season, Rolex will release more watches.. but forget about getting those sports model at retail prices as they are mostly sold to VIP clients. Finding a mint pre-owned is difficult nowadays. There are plenty of used pre-owned with 7/10 condition. Mostly what we saw in the great market pre owned pieces are usually being polished so it pleases the eyes. Not every watch guru can polished these watches to be as new.. it takes lots of lots of experiences. For those watch enthusiasts they are able to tell and even feel the texture of those polished pieces.. anyway for those who loves batman GMT now is the time to get it. For hulk and pepsi.. u gotta get it at premium.
