Choosing a Wedding watch
« on: October 22, 2019, 07:05:50 AM »
Dear MWF,

Good day to you !
As per subject above, I'm really looking forward towards my wedding day early next year and I'm looking to get a watch to celebrate this very special occasion.

My budget is not more than RM 20k but with the following rule :
1) New watch only.
2) Not looking into resale value as I wont be selling my wedding watch. Hence I don't mind softer brands.

I have these in my current collection :

1) Panerai Pam 24 [B Series, tritium dial]
2) Grand Seiko SBGK 005
3) Omega Planet Ocean orange bezel
4) Seiko cocktail time, turtle & skx.

I would prefer something that I can wear often and my daily activities involves 50% office environment and 50% outdoor sales environment.

Currently, Im looking into :

1) Zenith Elite Skeleton - Around 18k after discount
2) Zenith 50th Anniversary A384 Revival - Just 1k above budget after discount
3) Omega Seamaster 300 2018 - RM 18.5k After discount (which i think its not worth it due to low discount rate).

Would really appreciate all your input on the above, if any, or otherwise suggest me with some ideas.

Hope to hear from you guys soon ! Have a great Tuesday Ahead !

let me chip in. Every WIS need a Rolex in their collection. I would say Rolex Explorer 39mm! elegant, rugged and everlasting classic.

Hi Dexson,

First of all, congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

Looks like you already have a formidable watch collection. But anyway, here are my 3 suggestions for a daily beater as your wedding watch:

1. Oris Big Crown ProPilot X Calibre 115 (I know this is way over your budget right now but Oris tend to give huge discounts. Who knows, you might be able to get it at your desired budget at the time of your wedding)

2. Zenith El Primero Chronomaster 42mm in Stainless Steel

3. IWC Pilot Chronograph Le Petit Prince - IW377714.

Bonus suggestion: Tudor Black Bay GMT Pepsi

Hope the above helps.

Cheers.

Chill bro. Did read his post. There is one (blue dial) at my AD going for slightly less than the budget (after a discount) when i asked last weekend. AD is in Sarawak though.

Thank you G.MAC. I could not find a new one for that price. Even pre-owned are going for north of 20k. Is that Oyster Perpetual current year model?

I would think it is a current year model (if current year model means not NOS).

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your wishes ! Really appreciate it !

Well, I do agree that there's much more to prepare than I thought of to pull of a wedding but hey, looking at the bright side at least I can get myself a watch for this occasion ! :Laughing_on_floor:

Thanks Bryan and GMAC for the rolex recommendation and I will definitely do some survey to keep my options open although I doubt that I'm able to get a brand new one at below 20k

Sathiskumar, an AD actually offered me a CAL 111 non linear power reserve pilot watch at a huge discount. Too bad it doesn't sing to me. Having seen the caliber 115 upclose and my impression is that the visible mainspring is not properly polished and some jagged edge/lube can be seen from the dial side on the coiled mainspring. I am definitely nickpicking here but what is seen cannot be unseen.

Having said that, the chronomaster open is a good suggestion and I actually asked my AD to ask around other branches to see if there's any discontinued blue dial power reserve available for viewing. There's a white dial available but I'm not fond of the black lume markers.

Just to add on, I've also tried on the JLC polaris [no date] but the real deal is not as impressive as online pictures. What a big let down.

I will most probably make a decision by early November and will definitely report back on my selection !

Thanks again for the wishes.

Cheers !

Getting omega speedmaster, very versatile watch. U can drees it up and down. It looks timeless, never out of trend since 1960s until now and forever. It is just like your love, never change, like ur marriage stays forever.

Dexson,

Congratulations on the pulling the trigger and wishing you all the happiness in the world! Coming from someone with two kids myself, they are differently irreplaceable bundles of joy.

As mentioned, you’ve already got a solid set of watches. The GS SBGK005...man, do indulge us with some wrist shots of that Blue Iwate dial...feast for the eyes

I reckon the only complication missing from your collection, that would present somewhat of a daily functionality, is a GMT watch! And one that definitely fits the budget is the Tudor BB GMT on bracelet - the most ideal since you also spend time working outdoors. The extra $$$ saved could go into the wedding fund as well

Btw great suggestion on the Zenith A384 Revival. Stunning piece that one!

Congratulations! I second @razalizulkifli’s recommendation. A GMT does help expand your current collection’s repertoire of functionalities

Thanks Razali, Meor & Potassium for the generous wishes. Really appreciate it.

Agree that Speedy is a good choice. However I find the chronograph difficult to read. I was eyeing the sapphire sandwich speedy somewhere last year but somehow it doesn't grow on me.

Tudor GMT is definitely a good choice. I will try to find one over the weekend to try it on but I doubt any AD will have ready stock. I heard that there's a waiting list for it.

Cheers !

Congratulations on your weddings and also the new watch. I too find the Defy Classic Skeleton dial absolutely beautiful, definitely a great buck for value over some Rolex entry level models at the same price range.

I would favour the omega seamaster 300 out of the 3 you've shortlisted.
