Fake Rolex 6424/6426/6694?
« on: June 27, 2018, 08:40:37 AM »
Hello MWF hope all is well. Received a strange watch two years ago, and the story itself of how it happened is almost as strange but I'll leave the focus on the watch for now.

So the watch is a Rolex 6424 or 6694 or something of those oyster precision variants with a no date function. I did all the usual procedures by trying to find the serial and no luck as the watch itself dates from q few decades ago. So next, went to a watch store, and I though this would decided things. Opened up the case back and the movement looked genuine! What confused me more is that the stamped model number on the caseback didn't match the model, however, I read during this time rolex didn't necessarily match the reference printed on the model as the parts were all interchangeable with the changes between watches being face design and complication. So the watch seems plausibly original. However, I have only seen less than a handful of variants in this color way all originating out of singapore or malaysia which makes me even more suspicious. There is also the case of the lume indicator stating T swiss made T instead of the conventional T Swiss T for watches of this generation, denoting the amount of radium. Anyways, have fun picking away at this watch. I've been investigating so much in my free time deciding on what to make of this watch and hopefully you guys can shed some light as well.

Is it steel or gold ? The lighting is a bit yellow so can't tell.  Where the serial number is supposed to be, it looks like a "maker's stamp" usually seen on precious metals.

The 6694 back doesn't look like it's originally on the watch but could have been a service back from later after the older reference case back stocks were depleted.

It's gold plated I believe. And usually, that would be enough to call it a fake because there hasn't been a gold plated rolex recently however, these watches were known to be gold plated. I agree I can see the makers stamp but the serial seems to have rubbed out.

Rolex did make gold-capped watches up to around late 70s / early 80s I believe, for example some reference 1500 Oyster Perpetuals.

If that is really a makers stamp on your watch, it should be 14k or 18k gold, although it's quite am odd place to put it.  But there are very early references from the 40s & 50s which were quite quirky and don't follow the guidelines as we see in newer references.

Getting more curious. Maybe you should take some clearer pictures and send to Rolex SA to get their advice ? Or to a reputable publication like Hodinkee etc ?

Agree that there is a need to verify whether the watches you mentioned are genuine or not, I think to go to RSC (Rolex Service Centre) or to a Rolex Retail outlet, you will or may probably be able to find out whether they are fakes or not.
