Keep or sell?
« on: April 24, 2019, 09:43:27 AM »
Hello citizens of MWF,
I'm in a dilemma....so i recently acquired a new Tag as an upgrade from my old Tag. The thing is, i'm torn between keeping my old time piece or letting it go. Mind you, it has been with me thru thick and thin since the day i bought it. Some of my personal thoughts are: The timepiece has its sentimental value and it was my very first luxury swiss watch. However, on the flipside, i would probably find myself wearing it less since i've got a new one to wear. How laaaaa? i'm sure i can't be the only one who goes thru this thought process whenever one acquires a new watch. Comments/advice is much appreciated.
p.s: no element of the wife nagging/complaining is in the picture.

It isn't worth much if you sell it. Better to give it to your brother. :)

Hi,
Please keep both. If the old watch has so much sentimental value for you, there's no way you can let go. You won't know that you're are going to regret / miss your old timepiece after you sold it off. Sounds dramatic. Lol..

If i were you, I'd keep it, and maybe someday pass it on to my kid or something.

I once went through the same dilemma as you. I sold mine, and I initially kinda regretted it. But time passed and I’m glad I sold it as I rarely wore it. And even if I had it today, I would still rarely wear it. Keep only the ones you are sure you are going to wear. Pass it on to someone else who’s going to appreciate it more than you or sell it.

Since you mentioned about thick and thin, I believe you're the story kind of person.

Keep it, or gift it to someone close to you and will be willing or able to pass on your story. If you're a collector, then there's more reason for you to keep it because that Tag defines your beginning  :Dancing_banana:

1. Your opening statement is already leaning towards keeping it due to sentimental reasons. It sounds like you’re only seeking approval from this forum
2. You’re not trying to fund another watch.
3. You’re not short on cash or need funds for family/ emergency reasons.
4. Sentimental reasons and memories you had with the watch > whatever resale value you’ll probably get. It’s not worth it.
5. 1.

Do you get good value by selling off the watch? I once had such a dilemma when i was struggling whether to let go my first swiss watch (a used omega speedmaster), which I may not be bothered to wear it now even if I kept it because I have got something better on my wrist. I am sure every watch that we have worn gave us sentiment values, but it will gives you hard time from funding for an upgrade.

I believe anyone shouldn't be selling their first watch as it's usually filled with sentimental values and it's also likely what got you started in the hobby unless:

1. the watch brought you great disappointment and you no longer want to look at it
2. you really need the money you'd get from selling it

What he said. If the economic upside is not as great, why bother? The piece has great sentimental value to you.

A watch maybe is just a tool to someone,  like car.  When it's old and less attractive than the modern one, you trade in for a better looking and function one.

But to most of watch enthusiasts, the old watch is part of a man life
. Man is a weird Alpha animal and our  hunter instinct mainly inherited since ancient caveman time. We rely our hunting tools to make a living ,  sharpen and refine them...

Although  we don't really need these physical tools anymore,  so the only tool that we use daily and go with us is always our watch. That's one of the theory why man like watch.  ;D

Thanks for reading my bullshit.

I'll only keep if I don't need it for funding. Sentimentality is very subjective though =)

Since it brings you sentimental value, keep it. Wear once a while. Do not rush in letting it go. If after sometime you lost touch with it, then you can still sell it. Collecting involve a lot of fond memories. So, don't rush.

Personally I only keep what I know I would use. If you know you will not use your old time piece, just flip it.
