PS - For the sifus, if I may have a small request... would be grateful to have some pics of the movements too to admire Japanese technology.
Most people are familiar with the 3 main brands from the Land of Rising Sun. Are there other brands? Oh, did a quick google and found Orient. Would be interesting to hear of any "path less trodden" brands!

I am VERY happy with the way that one turned out. Only problem is the guy who did the ceramic coating didn't mask beneath the bezel, so now the bezel is extremely stiff to turn. But the watch looks so hot I can live with it!

Thanks Yoday. AFAIK though the 6105 is completely original, and unrestored. The upper siode of the case ios a bit shiny - I think it is just patina from years of use. It's possible that somebody tried to polish it, I guess, but the finish is quite inconsistent, which is why I think it is just 'naturally polished' over time. The crystla may be a replacement, though - it has a tiny bubble in it!

This is the cream dial Alpinist with 6R15 movement. As you are probably aware, there's one with green dial, the SARB017. These 6R15 Alpinists were introduced in year 2006 and they are really good buy for the quality. I am not sure if they are still in production, but you can surely find out from the usual online Seiko JDM suppliers. I got mine from Mr. K*ts* H*g*ch* who sells from Oita, Kyushu, Japan (can't give you too much clue otherwise our vigilant mods will delete my post)... ;D.

So, the window with the red square is just the day window (should be a black background but faded over the years). A lot of Seikos mark Sunday in red, and many also mark Saturday in blue. On the 6139-7100, it has a choice between English abbreviations (i.e. Mon, Tue, etc) or Roman numerals to mark the day. I like to have it set to Roman numerals, with Monday to Saturday represented as I - VI, but Sunday, instead of VII, is represented by that red square. It looks a bit different, and I really like the tiny splash of coloured detail on an otherwise very stark dial.

Betahulu1, thanks for your feedback. How about the screw crown?
I believe it is true for most seiko movements which can be wound. When we tighten the screw down crown, the stem continues to wind the watch. That is why it does not feel smooth. Hence it's advisable not to manually wind too much before you tighten the screw down crown. As far as I know this issue (if it is an issue) is also found in the gs 9Sxx movement if it has s screw down crow though u might want s confirmation from other seiko owners in this respect. Hope the above id of some help.... :laugh:

I believe it is true for most seiko movements which can be wound. When we tighten the screw down crown, the stem continues to wind the watch. That is why it does not feel smooth. Hence it's advisable not to manually wind too much before you tighten the screw down crown. As far as I know this issue (if it is an issue) is also found in the gs 9Sxx movement if it has s screw down crow though u might want s confirmation from other seiko owners in this respect. Hope the above id of some help.... :laugh:

Bumped into this Seiko while I was looking for a Speedy... The whole of my attention diverted! And since the damage is quite negligible, I have jumped the gun and purchased the watch on the very next day after doing some research online, let me present to you Seiko SNZH57, not much I have seen on MWF.
Originally it comes with a 41mm case, 22mm stainless steel bracelet, I don't think it's tapered in shape, looks quite thick on my tiny wrist, and it's a hollow (maybe solid) bracelet and make quite some noise when you shake it, did not feel good, in the end I have replaced it with a lizard pattern leather strap, tapered from 22mm to 18mm at the buckle, it looks to be black in color in the shop and under room lighting, but when I walked out of the shop and went under bright sun light, it appears to be blackish brown! Anyhow, it still looks better and feels better than the original bracelet on my wrist.
It has a dome mineral Hardlex crystal on the front and also a see through back, the the most unique part is the bezel, it's also covered by the same material, unidirectional and align well with 12 o'clock position. The hands and markers are gold tone lined, give it a very vintage note! I am not a great horology historian, but I can see a lot of owner converted them to Blainpain FF (Fifty Fathom), well that's not my intention. The lume on the hands and marker is remarkably bright, typical Seiko standard. I can't tell you sifus much about the typical day date Seiko 5 movement, accuracy wise I would not put much expectation as well.
Below is a good website if you guys wish to know more, however, there are some discrepancies noted, the Seiko I got was made in Japan but the one in the review was made in Malaysia, and the bracelets finding is different from mine as well.

in general, the orient stars are comparable to the seikos running 6r15, in terms of both movement and quality.
so this particular one has been compared to the seiko sarb / spirits, while orient star have their own divers which fall somewhere in between certain prospex divers and the MM300.

What shark says is correct. IMHO, 16 days is far too short to pass any judgment on accuracy and reliability. A watch is a fairly long term equipment. The Cal. 6R15 has been around since late 2005 (I think). So nobody knows how it'll hold up after 10 years, 15 years etc. ;D

Handling it for the first time, it feels solid and very well made. For the price I paid, I really feel that it is bang for buck. The manual states that it is only 39mm. But it really wears really well and sits well on the wrist. I have a 6 and a half inch wrist btw. It is not as heavy as my other watches, but this is no lightweight.

My very first Seiko. It is from the Presage line and originally with a steel bracelet. But I changed it to a leather one the moment I got home. This is similar to the one that Wang Lee Hom put his signature on as a limited edition, model SSA177J1. This one is the SSA157J1 with a silver-ish dial and SS bracelet, display back and 24 jewels. Vibration per hour is 21,600. The dial really is nicer in the flesh and the photos really don't do it justice.

Had one, flipped it a while back. If you can get one new for around US$100-120 (possible), or used around US$80 (also possible), it is VERY hard to beat for an automatic dive watch. Not perfect, I really wish it had SELs - if so, probably would have kept it - but for the $$$ you can't expect everything. Highlights are the dial and handsest, just really classy, and they exude genuine quality. The case is also decent, as is the bracelet (although for some reasion quite a lot of people complain about the bracelet). Clasp is the standard Seiko folded sheet metal POS that they seem to fit to every watch that isn't a fricking Marinemaster.
So yeah, the clasp is junk, but on the other hand you can wear it knowing you got the same clasp as on a Sumo and even a Shogun :D And anyway, Rolex sold good watches with rubbish clasps for decades, and it didn't do their reputation any harm!
The little Mako even has genuine WIS appeal. The movement is a modified Seiko 700x, so has history going waaaaay back. My old watchmaker respects these old movements, claims that the 700x series were better made than the 7S2x (less plastic parts). It also has that quirky button to change the day of the week. It would be more useful if it changed the date (to allow for 28, 30, 31 day months) but still, quirky is cool IMO. And it even has a screw-down collar.
The strap is hilarious! Typical Seiko stiff-as-a-plank, and with a tiny picture of a dolphin breaching! What the! I bought mine in Penang years ago, mainly as a souvenir more than anything. Paid way too much from the AD opposite Komtar (must be on Jalan Penang, but I always get lost in Penang), maybe AU$180, but to be honest even at that price it was pretty good value. Came on the bracelet but of course I insisted that the uncle throw in the OEM strap! ;D
Can't believe I wrote so much about a Mako... but I had great memories associated with that watch, and always great memories associated with Penang. There you go - definitely worth a try.

Seiko has too many models to choose from.Yes, some of the Seiko's are assembled in China. But that doesn't mean it is going to be bad.

It's a Seiko Solar SSC081. The lume is very nice and the weight and size feels great. I'm quite a big guy but my wrists are average. This fits well.

In all honesty, I wasn't really paying much attention to "just-another-one-in a gazillion-Seiko-quartz-chrono"until reading the recent reviews of that new Prototipo chrono powered by SII's VK64 mecaquartz movement (6T63 in seiko speak) which basically means the chronograph bits are mechanical built on top of a quartz time keeper.
In short, this means we get the pusher feel/click of a mechanical chronograph and the instant chrono hand reset versus the mushy feeling pusher and servo motor merry go round reset of a typical quartz chrono.
The chrono hand measures 1/5th sec so it sweeps instead of ticks.
The watch itself is a typical Seiko fare for the pricepoint.

Damn, that's a tough choice!
I really like that red GMT hand on black dial.
But I think the silver/cream dial is more flexible if changed to leather strap for a more dressy mode.
If had to make a choice, I'd go for the cream/silver dial!

1 - it has a bracelet for only like rm30 more.

I paid RM500 for mine, from a watch shop (believe it is one of the main Orient distributors in Malaysia) in 1 Utama, LG bridge area. I tried to search for it in a few other places (MidValley, Pyramid) but no other stores carried the model.
As for the strap, it is a worn&wound Crimson Model 2. It looks good on the Bambino, but I'm now sourcing for a thicker, black strap -- which I think suits the overall looks of the Bambino better. Here's a wrist shot from a little while back:

Hi guys,
Bumped into this Seiko while I was looking for a Speedy... The whole of my attention diverted! And since the damage is quite negligible, I have jumped the gun and purchased the watch on the very next day after doing some research online, let me present to you Seiko SNZH57, not much I have seen on MWF.
Originally it comes with a 41mm case, 22mm stainless steel bracelet, I don't think it's tapered in shape, looks quite thick on my tiny wrist, and it's a hollow (maybe solid) bracelet and make quite some noise when you shake it, did not feel good, in the end I have replaced it with a lizard pattern leather strap, tapered from 22mm to 18mm at the buckle, it looks to be black in color in the shop and under room lighting, but when I walked out of the shop and went under bright sun light, it appears to be blackish brown! Anyhow, it still looks better and feels better than the original bracelet on my wrist.
It has a dome mineral Hardlex crystal on the front and also a see through back, the the most unique part is the bezel, it's also covered by the same material, unidirectional and align well with 12 o'clock position. The hands and markers are gold tone lined, give it a very vintage note! I am not a great horology historian, but I can see a lot of owner converted them to Blainpain FF (Fifty Fathom), well that's not my intention. The lume on the hands and marker is remarkably bright, typical Seiko standard. I can't tell you sifus much about the typical day date Seiko 5 movement, accuracy wise I would not put much expectation as well.
Below is a good website if you guys wish to know more, however, there are some discrepancies noted, the Seiko I got was made in Japan but the one in the review was made in Malaysia, and the bracelets finding is different from mine as well.

I have bought one watch from a local AD which is cheaper than the ones offered by 2 website because this watch is a new model.
Going on the logic of no rental no staff cost and no other overhead the website should be able to offer lower price. But again this website may have to buy at a higher price from the factory as they are not the AD.
The rest of my experience for not so new models I got it cheaper from website which perhaps the logic as explain above is correct.
So I beg to differ your opinion.

So far i know only Seiko Marine Master 1000m divers have successfully gone thru the real deep sea test. Both automatic and quartz divers even exceeding its 1000m and survived at 3000m depth. Really Salute Seiko Marine Master.

Hi @bts, Actually the reason I sent it is due to problems with the date adjustment. There's a bit of free play in getting the first click in date adjustment. No problems with time adjustment. When the service centre recommended full overhaul and the price quoted was alright, I just told them to proceed. But it took slightly longer than a month due to high volume of watches to service.
IMHO, if your watch is working fine, you don't have to bring it in for servicing unless you are a dive instructer and go diving everyday with it :D

I do not understand why Thong Sia is not bringing in more stock. Seiko USA is still selling this watch, so it should not be the cessation of production.

Yes, kinetic capacitor is a problem.
That's why I don't buy any kinetic watch.
I have 1 Eco-Drive and 2 quartz watches. I was planning to get a nice looking and sporty outdoor kinetic watch to complete my collection. This direct drive seems unique, I will check it out see if it meets my expectations.

All SEIKO deployant straps are like this. The justification is the at the strap end should not be facing outside as it is considered rude. Observers should see only a continuous strap outline.

I went to Bangkok Siam Paragon Center before, the GS price is slightly cheaper than our JB GS AD. But compared to Japan GS price for the Hi Beat model , Malaysia is easily another RM 3k lower .

Got 3 high end Seikos to prove to TS their pricing is on the high side. Even after paying for GST and after taking into consideration forex and courier fees, it is still cheaper to get it from Japan (check out the more famous Japanese Internet merchants). When you get it from Japan, you are offered a discount from MSRP. Since the MSRP here is so much higher, the discount needs to be much higher than what the Jap merchant can give. Unfortunately again, the discount in Malaysia is paltry. When shown the facts, they can't say much.
For proof just go seiko Japan website which list the MSRP. The compare it to the MSRP in Malaysia. Way off.

Got 3 high end Seikos to prove to TS their pricing is on the high side. Even after paying for GST and after taking into consideration forex and courier fees, it is still cheaper to get it from Japan (check out the more famous Japanese Internet merchants). When you get it from Japan, you are offered a discount from MSRP. Since the MSRP here is so much higher, the discount needs to be much higher than what the Jap merchant can give. Unfortunately again, the discount in Malaysia is paltry. When shown the facts, they can't say much.
For proof just go seiko Japan website which list the MSRP. The compare it to the MSRP in Malaysia. Way off.

I've been looking at prices of Grand Seiko Snowflake SBGA011. The MSRP listed by US-based sellers is USD5500, which is higher than the RM22,048 quoted in Meor's blog.
Any idea if SBGA011 is sold out already locally? I'm thinking of buying one because I don't really fancy the new snowflake dial on SBGA211

Unfortunately Thong Sia's pricing schema for GS is much higher in Malaysia compared to Japan even after taking into consideration discounts and GST.

As for those shopping for watches when travelling in Japan, Yodobashi and Bic Camera prices are usually 20 to 30% off the MRSP and if you bring your passport and paying by credit card, you will get another 5 to 7% discount off the non-GST price. Yes, you do not need to pay Japan GST. Bic Camera requires you to show a discount voucher (on line voucher also applicable) to get the full 7% discount, ask the sales person how to get the voucher (they are usually very helpful). Otherwise just take the 5% discount.

From Original Transformer edition transform into "Thor x Asgard" :laugh:
Fully Metal gold bezel case make the watch feel look like adult and premium and heavy solid. Weight increase lot too! This watch is really outstanding after changing the case bezel, people Will look twice when I worn out. Definitely different with common black plastic Casio that we seen haha

Seiko Prospex ABC versus Casio Protrek ABC - both titanium, solar powered, 100m w.r. - extra, the seiko has a diver's extension as well as programmable tracking.
Note the time difference. Digital watches does have error rate.

This piece nearly got lost in transit with Pos Malaysia with all the weird tracking updates of the watch transiting between their KLIA and Brickfields Hub for almost 2 weeks.
Finally arrived in my hand safely yesterday after all the drama.

Yup, the pitch black is like a black hole.
It's so rare for a wrist watch dial.
Even the onyx stone dial is no match to this. :)
