Danny,

When one looks at a fountain pen, what does one look for?
Is it:
Built material?
Ink type?
............

How do you gauge a good pen?

Not speaking on behalf of anyone but mine, the feeling of the nib during writing is very important. The smoothness and soft nib feel. this is of course when u actually buy the pen for use. IMO, for collection purposes, they share the similar criteria with watches which I can't into details as i dunno much :)

Hi Peter,
At the risk of oversimplifying the whole selection process, the following would be the likely criteria for me:
I use my pens to write so what's most important to me are the nib quality and the ink capacity. Generally the Japanese brands such as Pilot, Sailor and Platinum/Nakaya tend to have very good nibs. Amongst the non Japanese brands I find Lamy, Pelikan, Visconti and Stipula to have reliable and good quality nibs.
As ink capacity is also important for me I like to go for Piston fill pens whenever possible. As an alternative cartridge converters are also fine.
Last but not least you have to like the look and feel of the pen. I particularly like the Japanese Urushi lacquered pens and Celluloid pens.

I guess when it comes to the crunch, the purchase decision for a fine fountain pen is very much an emotional thing. Buy the one that appeals to you the most.

you are right. the dealer at the weld kl is highly recommended. is it necessary to bring along your writing pad during the selection process? i reckon the paper you will be writing on is somewhat of a factor. i know some people are more at home writing with a few hundred ringgit pen and to some they are more comfort with more expensive ones. just my humble opinion.

Hrmm, since we're on the subject. Maybe some of the guys here might want to share why they love fountain pens or something along those lines. I'm always curious why people like them since the ink is a little thick and wet for me. I'm more used to the usual 0.5 and 0.7 Pilot G2, since there's more control (and I tend to lose my pens :p).

I love stationary, though, so I'm keen on hearing from others.

Personally I love fountain pens because of the way the ink flows so smoothly. With a fountain pen you're actually in control of your writing whereas with a ball pen, the pen controls you.
Also fountain pens are simply much better looking with the finely engraved 18K nibs.

I have posted a few fountain pen reviews on my blog which may be of interest to members who wish to learn more:

yes, it is a piston filled pen. recommended by some members in a pen forum. they compared this pen with a pelikan 200 (ss nib) which costs twice as much. its fine nib writes like pilot medium :)

Hey guys, sorry to resurrect this topic, but my dad passed me his old Mont Blanc that was given to him, so I thought it might be a good time to give fountain pens a try. Any suggestions on where to find suitable ink or something for it preferably in PJ? Any ink would be fine? The pen isn't in the best of conditions, but I assume it's working. I'd probably take it to the service center, but that'd probably suck my money.. :p

Dad doesn't care much about stationary, so probably wouldn't be useful to ask him. Btw, don't you guys find that fountain pens bleed through the pages a lot?

I actually found a relatively cheap one here...thought of maybe getting one for fun, hehe: http://www.melpens.com/Lamy/AL-Star_Silvergreen_Fountain_Pen.aspx

Yes, I own a carbon color Lamy Al-star and it nice to hold. The nib is not as smooth as my pilot VP Fermo but its price is 1/5 of the pilot :)

With my limited knowledge about ink, I think most ink will do for the mont blanc (unless this pen uses specific type of ink ) You could use mont blanc ink but I think parker, lamy and shaffer ink will do alright
Title: Re: Let's see pics of your favourite fountain pens.
Post by: kinson on May 23, 2011, 12:45:44 PM
Nice. I'll go out and evaluate the price of the ink, if it's not too expensive, I'll give the Mont Blanc a go, if no Ill buy the Lamy...i like the yellow one, haha.

Danny, you're right. But if I carry a pen on flight, it would be another Namiki instead  :)

Takashi, the M90 is a pen Pilot created to celebrate its 90th anniversary. It is a limited run of unannounced numbers (mostly sold out by now) and was created to also 'bring back' the famous integrated nib Pilot Myu design of the 70s.

For the past few anniversary celebrations, Pilot has released a low, mid and high end pen to commemorate the events. For the 90th, the M90 was for the lower end of the market.

For the mid end, they had the Toki, which I believe was a limited run of 900.

I was not a fan of the Toki but I did not manage to take a photo of the high end release.

I was however a HUGE fan of the mid end release for the 88th anniversary, the Nioh.

A stupid question, do the ppl use the ink that comes together with the limited production pen? Will the ink dried out or change composition if left in the bottle for too long?

I am attracted more towards the modern simplicity of the M90.

Too bad my current lifestyle and work doesnt call for a nice pen which i 100% use pens which are free gifts.

I do however appreciate a well crafted piece of useable art.

Maybe the next gtg you can show us some as well.

Just got back from the Weld and got my first fountain pen, the Lamy Safari Yellow :)

(http://img853.yfrog.com/img853/2162/p1130054.jpg) (http://yfrog.com/npp1130054j)

Strangely, the ink (that came in blue, I didn't check) seems rather watered down, not sure if it's supposed to be that way. Feels very very light to me. I've uploaded a comparison pic to my Pilots above.

The guy who served me at the Pen Gallery (Saiful, I think) wasn't all that friendly, probably because I'm young and don't look very much like a businessman, haha. Kept getting the vibe that he wasn't paying much attention to me. I didn't really ask much questions cause i didn't feel comfortable, so I think I'll be googling and asking you guys advice on this...maybe join a fountain pen forum, hahaha. I need to figure out how to use the converter too.

Servie contrasted a lot to the Mont Blanc shop in Pavilion I went to several hours earlier, one of the staff there (dealt with her before) took time to sit down and chit chat with me on anything. Sent my dad's hand-me-down Mont Blanc pen there for servicing, about RM160 :/

Any comments on the ink lightness, guys?

Cheers,
Matt

Actually, the ink has started to get darker..maybe it just needed time. Strange thing is that I see some ink splotches at the top of the nib now, even after I wipe it off, it comes back. Pictures below.

What is usually done when servicing a pen?

Hi Peter,
I'm assuming that you post refers to a fountain pen. When used properly a fountain pen require little maintenance.
I've used fountain pens from various brands for the last 5 years and I can only recall a few occasions when I had to send my pens in for serving.

i) Aurora 88 - Had to send this pen back to factory in Italy for warranty claim when the piston knob became undone.

ii) Montblanc 149 - Ink flow was very disappointing for such a legendary pen. Nib had tendency to dry out after a minute or two of use. Sent it back to MB boutique a few times but those guys could do little to improve the situation. Finally the pen doctor at Gills managed to solve the problem for a small fee. (Took him less than a minute to fix the pen).

Generally a well made FP should last you a life time with minimal servicing requirement but just remember to flush out the ink before storage to prevent dried ink from clogging things up.

Here's a link to a good resource on fountain pen repairs and servicing:

sshark, yes and no. probably.

takashi - u sure u wanna kena poison ah?  ;D

kinson - some inks are meant to be lighter. no point comparing a water soluble ink against the consistency of a gel ink. don't expect a nib to look completely clean from ink when in use. as long as the ink doesn't spill all over the place and you can write smoothly, it's fine. it is normal for a steel nib to feel scratchy especially if it is your first FP. just write more with it and over time, the nib will feel smoother. just remember, u don't have to press down as hard as a ball pen when using an FP.

as a japanese pen lover, i must say that the japanese brands tend to be more consistent.

Not sure about PJ, but I would recommend that you send it to the "Pen doctor" at KS Gills, located at Jln Tuanku Abdul Rahman.

i know this one cannot compare with all the giant names here but how many started with Hero as your first fountain pen....?

I did, and still have fond memories of it...

those days, some of my class mates use their pocket money to buy latest toys...one day i spent it on a Hero pen....brought to school....with a noble intention of wanting to look academic and hopefully attract girls...

But it seems girls will always prefer bad boys.... :Laughing_on_floor: :Laughing_on_floor:

The Hero 100 is one of my favourite fountain pens and is still on of the best hommage to the legendary Parker 51.
And I remember having bought one of the lower end Hero pens for only RM5.00 around 3 years ago. Fantastic value for money.

I am more a fountain pen collector then watch collector. Dont have enough fund to collect watches. In fact, at one time, i didnt even wear a watch for almost 9 years until i bought a cheap military style watch from ebay that last me almost 2 years. And it cost only rm30 plus delivery. For my 35th bday, my girlfriend bought me a seiko chronograph that cost almost rm800 (my first expensive watch). :)

I found that fountain pen collecting can also be very expensive. Had my eye on a 146 montblanc, a vintage waterman as well as a vintage 19th century montblanc eye dropper. However, as i am planning for my wedding, that has to wait. Yeah, namiki can be very expensive but i dont think it is to my taste. I rather prefer european nib. Japanese nib normally is on the finer side (japanese medium nib is equivalent to european fine nib and so on so forth).

Btw, if you are interested in some good cheap pen, i would advise trying noodlers pen like noodlers ahab. You can pretty much use any vintage nib with that pen and it originally comes with a flex steel nib. Planning to get one soon. This one i can afford despite the needs to save for the wedding. Usd20 not incl delivery. Future wife said ok to buy... Hahahaha

Wish there is a separate malaysian forum focusing on fountain pens... Love to chat with like-minded collectors.

Cheers.
