thanks dennic.T for the advice. my work is 75% indoor and 25% outdoor. hardly go swimming (or diving) in the sea, occasionally do some kayaking, hiking, travelling. the sub looks rugged but if one is never going to plunge into sea, then what is the use. the other question is whether you are actually going to dive or snorkel with your sub. pricewise i think it is about par. i just need some expert view on the practicality of owning one or the other. do not want to spend so much money and then regret the purchase. thanks again.

My experience:
White Exp 2 - nice to have for about 3 months
Black Exp 2 - nice to have for about 6 months
Submariner Date - nice to have for about 1 year...

I agree with bro rusminag. For me, I find it easier to love the submariner longer than the explorer 2. I've never been able to keep the explorer 2 for longer than a year without flipping it for something else.

looks like more subs supporters than exs. i think there are 2 used ex on sale on MWF. that seem to support some of the views here that subs marriages last longer.

imo Exp 1, unless you don't own and want a dive watch then get the sub first.

i think its down to looks....coz the sub can also provide 2nd time zone reading through the rotating bezel.  Since beauty is in eye of beholder, its mostly up to you...

Best is find a preowned shop and try both on wrist.  The sub is of course a classic with a strong following.  But... never underestimate the lure of the understated white polar....

wow, looks like "the force" is strong with the sub. thanks to everyone for your invaluable advice. btw, how much is a new sub or exp, not that i can afford a new one but to compare the price with some used ones being put up for sale.

Are you looking at the Explorer or Explorer 2?

Myself started with the Exp2 and although I have acquired others along the way, I tend to come back to the Exp2 for daily wear. If you like or use the GMT function, then the Exp2 is nice. Get the white face for easy reading of time. I will probably add the Explorer to my collection sometime in the future. Both the Exp1 and Exp2 (16570) wear very light and comfortable.

I've never been a fan of rotating bezels as things like dust and hair tend to get stuck in there. Have no need to go down to 300m so no need for a Sub for daily use. The thought of adding a two-tone Sub with blue dial is in my mind, but it won't be for daily use.

Hope you find the one that makes you happy.

Its a tough call for me.
Both my sub & exp II gets almost equal wrist time.  ;D
Having said that, u see more subs on the streets than exp II

thanks again to all the generous & diverse contributors, most kind &  thoughtful. in reply to dpkong, i m inclined towards exp2. perhaps as pexus suggested, one need to try the sub and exp and "feel" the force. hopefully the wife feels it is money well spent in these uncertain and trying times.

the thing about Rolex is if you suddenly need to raise cash and have no choice but to sell off the watch, you wont lose much.  Provided you buy it at the right price.  Not possible to discuss pricing in this forum but if you diligently search all the sales thread here, you'll get a rough but reliable estimation of the pricing.

Lesson learnt opinion,
Since i have both,

Explorer for if you travell often where dual time is nice feature
On the other hand
If you snorkling or diving more then submariner is more suitable... At its a benchmark watch for sports watch and diving time or snorkling is very useful
