Where the Tudor Black bay GMT got its inspiration (a short tale of 3 Pepsies)

Made a simple illustration to show you guys where Tudor got their inspiration for their new Black Bay GMT.

On the left is the Rolex 6542 from the late 1950s with its very fragile bakelite bezel insert. Note the lack of crown guards for this very early Rolex GMT. These are rarer than rocking horse droppings these days.

In the middle is the Tempus Machina 711Z which is actually a modern Rolex 116710 GMT II modified and unrecognizable with a specially made bakelite bezel and crown guards filed off. The lugs have also been slimmed down from the boxy 116710 via machining and lug holes drilled onto its sides. Price? USD35K.

Now looking at both those watches, the Tudor Black Bay GMT suddenly becomes very very appealing to me. Can you see where their design inspiration came from?

 I never realized such a modified 116710 existed - looks nice but for $35k, it's similiar to average prices of the original 6542.

In fact, Blaken the black Rolex conversion specialist makes a white dial and black dial Pepsi based on the 116710 too. Again, crown guards lobbed off and fat lugs shaven.

But now that Rolex themselves are back in the Pepsi party it remains to be seen how the convertion market will fare.

This is a definite cop for me. Saw it on Tudor's insta story on the first day of Baselworld and immediately show a pic of it to my girl in which I got a warning straight away not to buy.

The first in house movement to feature a GMT function for Tudor. The MT5652 COSC-certified movement. What i like is the 70 hour power reserve despite a jumping hour hand and date and added GMT function. It is on par with the New Rolex caliber which also has 70 hour power reserve (datejust 41, Daytona and new gmt-master ii)...

It has a let all the elements of a Rolex GMT but not the price.

It is abit thick from the side. Fortunately or unfortunately it is 41mm diameter and my wrist is 7.5" therefore suitable between 44-46mm. Sigh. So likely to be giving this away to my brother for his upcoming Birthday. 

Price is 13k+ if it is list price. Else I can see people selling as high as 18-19k on the secondary market.

You're right... I got mine recently, and on certain angle it looks like a coke, and with proper lighting, it turns back into a Pepsi...
