Title: Rolex service Malaysia to change bezel insert
Post by: bimmerman on February 20, 2018, 02:30:00 PM
Hi guys, i'm thinking of getting my GMT Master II (non-ceramic) bezel insert replaced at Rolex Malaysia. I was wondering if Rolex malaysia will let me keep my old bezel insert or do they not return the old one after they replace it.

I don’t see why they wouldn’t return the old one. It is yours. You must ask them to return all pieces they had to change during a service. Omega does it so I cannot imagine why Rolex would keep these parts.

Well I guess it's because there's quite a lucrative market for used Rolex parts. For instance, I can imagine my slightly faded but otherwise pristine "Pepsi" bezel might be worth something to someone who wants to convert their Black or Coke GMT to Pepsi.

Also, Rolex does not want you to convert your GMT to any colour other than the one it originally came with. Omega on the other hand don't seem to bother.

So ask Rolex directly...

When I sent in my GMT for service at the KL RSC, I asked the all black bezel to be replaced with a Pepsi bezel. No problem, it was done.

As to your original question, the answer is "No". RSC retains all replaced parts. But I guess there's no harm asking for them to be returned. The worse answer you get is a "No"...

Good to know but legally the old bezel is yours.

Yup, it is still yours but Rolex SC would normally not let you have it. It's just one-to-one swap. But you could ask really nicely and hope that they make an exception for your case. The 116710 warranty card these days register the info very accurately so switching from LN to BLNR/BLRO would be a no-no, but the earlier 16710's papers do not register the A (Coke), B (Pepsi), or C (All-Black) in the registry. So, I have heard of cases whereby they would accommodate swaps between A and B or vice versa, provided the watch came in with either one of those original bezel inserts. But if it's an All-Black, then they would just go back to black.

And yes, that was the original Pepsi bezel insert that came off the watch after having served alongside the watch for 18 years. The fading was even and the insert was unmarked, so no harm in asking if they could let you retain it for old time's sake. And if you were a repeated customer over the years and would not flip off the faded insert (a grey reseller offered RM1k to buy off the insert when I wanted to flip the 16710), you might just get lucky. No harm in asking them really.

i have tried many times to retain the original parts and even tried the "it's mine i own it" line...... RSC dont care... its their policy is exchange on parts only.
They said its factored into the price and if you were a authorised service center and could buy parts then you would see the price would reflect that when they swap out a part.
So good luck in keeping your original part as they dont make it easy....
I have actually tried taking one in without the bezel saying it fell off and was lost and the price they quoted was crazy due to the fact there was no part in exchange......

Hi mate, how are you doing these days? Been there, done that; with regards to the bezel (insert). Did you mean the whole bezel, or just the bezel insert? But it's true that the Malaysian SC had been adhering to stricter practices over the recent years.

Your charming good looks must have betrayed you, mate. LOL, if you were the simple o' me and the stars were aligned correctly on that particular day, then you could just gotten the spare set by the side. But yup, I guess that they have seen many such tries.

RSC only return parts if these parts are made of solid gold, eg crown / links / bezel (replacement for damaged parts)
