Title: RE: Taxes
Post by: ExplorerII on July 09, 2019, 12:33:43 PM
Need some advice from those who have recently shipped in watches from japan.

Have you been taxed and by how much ?

Thinking of buying something from Seiya.

Thanks

Definitely get taxed. Seiya declares actual value on the manifest. Custom will charge SST on the amount + SST on the postal value + admin charges.

Thanks. Sorry to sound like I’ve been living under a rock but how much will be the percentage tax for watches ?

i got lucky and wasnt taxed. if you do get taxed however it's 5% of the declared value, iirc also including shipping costs.

Thanks! Very useful info. Was your shipment from Japan as well? And how long ago was it ? I’ve noticed lately that customs are starting to be more strict.....

Shipment from Gnomon usually dont' get taxed as they don't put the correct value on the manifest. Advantage: customs will not bother to check when the 'value' is small. Disadvantage: if the package is loss, liability by the courier's insurer is only based on the amount listed

Accept this arrangement at your own risk

Apologize if this is off topic but i don't think it warrants a separate thread. I read on Seiya's site that they ship via EMS or DHL. Which do the the sifus here use? Also, when stopped at customs for tax payment, did you have to go to the customs office when using EMS? (For DHL they will handle the payment for you).

from experiences on other purchase, if EMS = will be delivered via our poslaju, if your items get held by customs, you can either ask poslaju to pay for you first and then you pay them later, there is a service fee, or you can go to customs office and pay yourself (also can nego abit or justify why you shouldnt be taxed if you want, but most likely will fail). for DHL, they'd usually pay first and you pay later. there is also a service fee.

I'd personally pick DHL cause i want it to arrive fast :P

I did’t get taxed (used Fedex as courier). The Japanese seller put the actual purchase value but declare as “Precision Equipment”, plus I deliver to my office.

Ok I think that’s why it went thru. EMS passes the package to Poslaju I think and that may be how it slipped thru. I decided to ship via DHL for peace of mind but will likely get taxed. Will update when I get it.

tbh it's all luck, higher valued items will likely get noticed as well and taxed. i've had EMS that were taxed before just because the box was too big even though the prices arent over the limit, they think i under declare the price  :-\

Ok. Need to consider this method next time. DHL delivered my watch today. Super fast as I bought on Friday evening. Downside is that I got taxed.

Bought another watch from japan and this time the seller only uses EMS. The watch is now held at customs and I’ve just received a letter from poslaju asking me if I want to nominate them as my agent to handle the taxes.  Need some advice from the forum sifus.....can poslaju be trusted to do this properly and if yes, how long would they take. OR should i go to the custom office myself. I don’t mind paying poslaju to handle it if they are able to do it right....concerned that they might just let customs tax me at a higher rate or worse...

For an extra fee, you can collect it in KL. Otherwise you need to go to KLIA. I suspect the actual value was written on the manifest so the SST amount is standard.

Thanks but the watch is in penang.  What i would like to know is if poslaju can be trusted to handle this? The fee is rm50 so I can stomach it if it’s handled smoothly....

Folks sorry to revive this thread. Am going to buy another watch from japan. Can the sifus tell me if there has been an increase in tax? Still 5% ? Thanks!

Reckon should still be at a rate of 5% , not tax but excise duty (goods + shipping price).

These are some really valuable information; I've always considered buying from Japan or overseas but was always worried about the customs and taxes.

I've never purchased a watch from overseas before, but have purchased rather expensive apparel (about MYR12,000) before, and what happened was that the seller shipped using EMS, and then I received a notice from Pos Laju telling me that I may appoint them to help me pay the tax and clear customs then deliver to me with a small service fee, OR, I could just go to KLIA and do it myself; I ended up going to KLIA and cleared the parcel on my own; was able to convince the customs officer that the jacket I purchased was actually MYR1,200 ,not MYR12,000 - they actually reluctantly agreed, and I got lucky and paid much less tax.

I know you know this, but just in case. The 5% service tax is unique to watches. Watches have 0% import duty in Msia. For other goods, the import duty will vary.
