2 mid-price timepieces or 1 expensive one
« on: January 06, 2018, 09:14:21 PM »
Hi All,

I have a dilemma and I would like to get your opinions.

Assuming that your maximum budget at the moment can not be extended, will you buy two mid-range pieces from your ideal watchlist or one more expensive piece? Specifically, I am looking at 2xRM16k pieces vs. 1xRM30k so overall quality of those watches is not that different. Desirability is.

Cheers.

Depends on what those watches are. Or what that 30K watch is...

As mentioned, « from your ideal watchlist ». Everybody’s got one I presume, and everybody’s got different max budget.

But for me, I am eyeing for quite some time an Explorer II 216570 polar, or the new standard Omega Railmaster + Grand Seiko SBGR261.

The satisfaction you get from the Explorer II will be much better than the Railmaster & Grand Seiko combo. Either way, after you acquire any one you will start to think about the possibilty of getting the other two.

Yes, I guess you are correct in the way that the real question is which option first...

Personally, I'd go with the more expensive one. I feel that the expensive one would help scratch my itch way better than two mid-price timepieces.

Between the Eii Polar and combination of Railmaster + GS, I think more pertinent is to ask yourself if you prefer a sports watch or dress watches. Then it would all become an easy choice. If the choice was between an Eii vs Seamaster + GS / Railmaster + GS Diver, then I would opt for the latter as you would have both the sports and dress watch for different occasions. Have fun choosing your poison

I have all three brands, Rolex, GS and Omega. While what I have are different models, I believe the ownership experience would be close to similar.

GS, while I love it, this watch really is a work of art and the polishing of this watch make it a work of art more than just a timepiece. Hence I tend to baby it too much.

Omega, classic, clean and simple design. Will stand the test of time. But not for every occasion as it may not be “casual or sporty” enough.

Rolex, may not be “dressy enough” for a suit and tie occasion. However one of the best day to day watches due to the versatility and toughness of the watch. Bracelet quality for the six digit references is one the best and solidly constructed around.

So simple verdict is...Rolex FTW...can’t  go wrong here.

In any event, the most exciting bit while deciding to buy a watch is the hunting and trying on process. Have fun and good luck on your purchase.

If I have your budget, I will get my self a good preowned Patek Philippe.

If only for new watches, a sports model Rolex, or a Datejust Rolex for sure.

A Patek might probably be the last watch I would imagine myself buying.

But a good sports watch from Rolex is very tempting as I am keen on tool watches from the likes of Omega, Tudor, Sinn, Damasko et al.

Yeah, every time I see a nice picture of a 216570 like this one, my heart beat is rising. But it is a big investment in a one watch!

The explorer 2 will be my pick, end of the day is all about the quality than quantity.

Haha, many of us have been through the same phase, mate! I remember the 1st time I spent RM10k+ on a Swiss watch, I had spent many nights thinking about it before finally pulling the trigger. Swing by my blog sometimes and you could read about my journey going through 60+ watches so far, and I'm a serial flipper. Some of the other collectors here have gone through hundreds of watches- one name comes to mind, and as time goes by, you would get used to the idea of getting watches to scratch that itch. So don't worry absorb utility this one "investment", there would likely be many more in future.

Get one at max budget and be able to keep it with you all the time unless you wear both at the same time.

Irregardless of which brands of watch, always go for the most expensive one. That way, u will enjoy the watch most and cherished it more. Plus, u will only need to save half the aamount to get the cheaper watch in future! Imagine buying 2 of the cheaper watches now; u will need to save (and work!) to get the full monty for the expensive watch!

That depend on your budget for the expensive one. I would suggest why not get a cheap daily beater and an expensive one?

With the planned Rolex price increase, better buy the most expensive one now.

EXP 2 polar for me too.
The dial is very easy to read.
