Title: With a RM 5,000 budget, what can I get?
Post by: William on January 13, 2018, 09:08:35 AM
I've posted a similar topic at the modern watch section, but I want to see what is there to see at the vintage section.

Has to be 20mm lug width, be on a bracelet, case thickness is around 10-12mm and an automatic.. Show me your suggestions MWF!  :Jumping:

You could pick up a time-beaten Rolex Precision 6694 at that budget. But factor in a full servicing at Rolex SC and that would add another RM2k thereabouts (it would be cheaper to service it outside with known watchsmiths). An Omega Speedy Reduced could be had for around that budget too, but again the servicing of the chrono at Omega SC would add up to its price.

I would suggest Rolex 6694 if you still manage to get a unit with good movement.

Yup, there are many Franken 6694 out there- seen my fair share with modified parts and such.

Yes, certainly it is. Not easy to get an original 6694 nowadays.

I just talked to my usual watchsmith 2 hours ago, a 7750 chronograph movement watches before year 1995 should be good to own because it is durable and zero plastic parts.

The Valjoux 7750 should be a walk in the park to most watchsmiths, and parts are aplenty still. It's those piggy-back modules like Dubois Depraz that would pose a bit of a challenge in parts and skilled workmanship.

What sort of watch are you looking for? A bit more details will help...

The 7750 being already 8mm thick, you won’t find a watch with it below 12mm I believe.

Maybe have a look at pre-loved Longines, TAG Heuer Carrera, Tudor Prince Oysterdate. Some Oris and Ball might fit the bill too.

But for me the main model you should look into is an Omega Seamaster from the 60’s. But they might look too small for you at mainly 34-35mm.

Omega Constellation automatic should be able to meet your budget and watch thickness at only 8mm.

Hmmmm. I mean lets say if I do pay for servicing, how's the accuracy like? Is it all over the place or it actually does keep time. I actually saw an old 1990s DateJust for sale for around Rm 10-14k.. Do you think its worth the money in terms of accuracy and quality? Would it hold up to today's environment?

Rolex 3135 movement was introduced in 1988 and is still used in their Submariners! So yes it holds up.

Since this is a Vintage watch thread, how about an actualy vintage of circa 1970s/80s?

For RM5,000, you could source a Seiko Bullhead, Seiko Kakume or a Rally Driver.

I am not sure what the strap widths are on them though, but 5 mins in google, pretty sure you'll find the answer.

How about a Corum Admiral cup 42mm.  Closer to RM 10 k range but it's new and a piece which you won't hv to worry about warranty it is recent and pretty good looking. It's a handsome watch and if u get the leather version it is slightly cheaper than the metal bracelet.

Other than Rolex 6694.

Omega DeVille , and Philippe Du Bois are good choices too!

If need something a bit more modern then Tudor Archeo!

Vintage and under 5k, Seiko as one poster suggested is the obvious choice.

Plenty of options in seiko vintage space + watches with tons of history too! Google Seiko 6138 and 6139..

Up your budget a bit and with some patience  :Praying:, you could find a decent Datejust 1601 or 16013 for 7-8k ... as I did recently  ;-)

You look at vintage Grand Seiko at that price range.
I got myself a King Seiko 5646-7080 and I'm really happy with it.
Great movement. Great history. Great price.

For that budget I would say you can get a better vintage seiko than a vintage rolex in terms of the condition of the watch

Try looking at the Seiko Lord Marvel 5740, well below your budget. Small problem is that it’s 19mm lug width, but you should be able to push it in (speaking from experience).
