Very good fungsui, your own or renting? if staying for good, better buy it off

Zitan,

Renting. Would like to buy the house I am staying in but Taiwan is one of the most expensive places to buy a house. Trust me, Malaysia is still cheap.

Scott,

Yes Taipei. No worries though, don't think the typhoon is going to be as bad as Morakot that hit in 2009.

watchmanu,

Somehow I suspect the Macro on the X-100 is not one of its strong point. However I will try.

After seeing all the nice shots posted ny members here, I realized taking photos with my wife's Sony TX-5 just does not cut it anymore.
I find it surprising that I don't own a camera... I only use my iphone.
My wife's camera is the only one that we have.
With the huge selection of DSLR out there, I am bound to get lost.
After knowing Mr.Hobbit got himself a Fuji X100 and I started digging abit for the model's review and I am quite surprised that is was rated above a Leica model...
For an idiot like me who knows "Zero" about cameras, would Mr.Hobbit recommend a purchase of a Fuji X100 or is there another camera that's good enough for a beginner like me?
Imwould like a simple point n click camera that can take some quality shots under all lighting conditions.
If a model that requires an upgrade in lens and hardware is a no no for me.

Hanz079,

The Sony is a pretty good p&s camera. I have the Sony DSC-T900 and I find it pretty good. I don't think I am the right person to give advise. I have way too many cameras (8 at last count) and am still learning. By learning, I have all the books, magazine, but still lazy to carry a camera and even more lazy to read. I am a visual learner (also I am dyslexic).

I do know that the X-100 is not a camera for all as it does lack a zoom facility. This is not an issue to me as my main (yeah, right) is the Nikon D300. Yes, I am one of those who believes that equipment is everything.

Perhaps you might want to consider one of those four thirds cameras? I have not personally tried them, so I cannot comment. I have tried and own a bridge camera. I can tell you that yes the zoom is awesome, but my personal feeling is 'I don't think so'. Maybe I got the wrong one (Fuji Fine Pix S2500HD).

My only advise is not to get caught up in the mega-pixel thing or pixel count. There is only so much you can squeeze out of the camera.

Thanks for the reply Hobbs... I think I better start a new thread asking for directions for amateur photography hardware. Not fair to hijack your thread.

Hobbit,
Beautiful pictures with your X-100.
8 cameras? Wow, I am impressed.
For me, my last count was 6 cameras (Browniies, P&S, SLR etc) that I owned with 2 functioning, the rest are collectors items. Just refurbished an old Vivitar mechanical SLR in good condition, ready to load in a film and take pictures.

Hanz, I believe your iphone can also do it - taking nice pictures.
But, if you want to specialise in photography, you will need different set of equipment, ie a better camera with most of the functions for your needs.
Let me illustrate (correct me if I am wrong, please) -
1) If you like taking scenery or landscape pictures, most cameras whether P&S or a basic dslr will do the trick.
2) If you want to take potrature or even macro shots, then a dslr with a potraiture/macro lens will be ideal.
3) If you like to take lightings, or nigh photography, you will need tripod, flash systems (maybe more than 1 flash) etc.

Oops, sorry to have gone off topic.
Thousand apologies!!

Mate, there is a trick how to focus using macro mode ;) if i remember correctly, please try the following:-

I got the following on a forum:-
"push the focus selector up to MF with your left hand and press the AFL button with your right hand (autofocus in manual mode) and you'll get a solid macro lock. Another advantage is that you can do this in OVF without jumping to EVF. Works much better than "proper" macro - very reliable and the framelines will jump to parallax correct when you half depress the shutter."

Try google a bit more i'm sure you find more ;) A bit tough at first but i get used to it after awhile ;) The macro shot on this camera is fantastic (almost not 1:1), give it a try

also you can check out www.x100forum.com to learn more ;)

Scott,

Thanks for the tip. I am already a member of the x100 forum. I still think that the Macro on the X-100 is not as good. However I played with the X-100 (not mine) when I was at that camera case place, the shots were just awesome. Even the hard core Leica guy agreed.

Sid Vicious/ Watchnewby,

Old cameras gathering dust. Old Leica Digilux-2, Sanyo pistol grip camera (wanted to use this when I had the Smart42, and was suppose to 'zoom' up Genting over the weekends and subsequently suppose to use it on a bike doing the same thing....), bridge Fuji to 'replace' the Nikon as I was too lazy to carry the Nikon, Nikon D300, X-100, and a couple for the kids as they wanted to do photography and the wife's Sony.

5 days, 4 nights is just about right.

Anyway, shot with a Sony DSC-T900. Like I said, not bad a camera. I like it.

All these for about RM250, the tofu and fish is missing as it arrived late. You pay for the seafood, rice and drinks. The tofu and vegetables are free.

From my favourite sushi guy. This is only RM50. Melts in your mouth and not in your hands, and taste a whole better than m&m.

The free veg.

Sinful but lovely, fried fish eggs.

Steamed prawns.

Mantis prawn, not the small types you find in Pangkor.

Lala.

Hungry yet?

Just like Damansara Ht, but, with even better & unobstructed open frontal view. Nice mingtang & green dragon. Grab it if I were you.
Enviable

Zitan,

I wish. The house was valued at RM 12 million. A couple of ringgit over my budget.  ;D

House here are very expensive. Same with apartments. My friend bought his apartment for RM 450,000 and it is only 350 sq ft and it is 1 and a half hour from the city. Another friend just sold his apartment in Taipei city, 2,400 sq ft for RM 48 million. Yes, RM 48 million.

Actually, price almost equivalent to Damansara Ht or Kenny Hil, & better view! But, obvious beyond me

Zitan,

Not really. Damansara Heights and Kenny Hill within city limits. The house I am in is 1/2 hour from the city, more like houses in sungai buloh. The house is about 3,600 sq ft. In Malaysia, I believe should be about RM 4 to 6 million.
