Prefer buying watches with or without complete set?

Hi all,

Heard from one of the runners that customers now prefer buying watches with complete set (warranty,certificate,box) and they are no longer interested on watches without complete set.

I personally think many pre-owned shops still able to sell watches without complete set to customers depending on customers preference and of course, their budget.

Share your thoughts! Just want to know what you all think!

I buy a lot preowned watches, some are complete set , some are non-complete. Certainly, complete set is more expensive. If both complete and non-complete set of the preowned piece are both available for a particular model, I will go for complete set unit. Even if it may cost me another 30% premium in price.

Yes, given an opportunity, I would definitely go for the one with complete set. However, it also depends on what is missing. For example, if a non complete set Rolex Submariner (watch, watch links, warranty card are available, just the box is missing) is selling at RM 28K compared to a complete set at RM 32K, I may just but the non-complete set because the Rolex box can be sourced at about RM 500.00.

full sets from box, manuals, tags, especially the cards.

those only come with the watch and all the other things went missing reflected the owner neglectful behavior hence the watch itself can't be any good being well taken care off.

I would definitely go for the one with complete set. The resale value would be higher and at least you have a peace of mind when it comes to keeping the watch. Like what some forumers have mentioned, the watch wouldnt be in good condition if manuals/tags gone missing.

At the very least, I would get watch with warranty certificate/card.

Box, manuals and tags can usually be sourced.

Why must have original warranty certificate/card?

1) Higher resale value
2) Easier to find buyer

Also, when it comes with the certificate or card, it is less likely to be stolen goods.

I will always make sure preowned watches are bought through legit sources. It the deal is too good to be true; it is usually not true.

Not too fussy so long as all the documentation are intact. A set without the box is not a deal breaker for me. At the end of the day, a good price is what is most important.

If the watch is less than 5 years old, I prefer it with the box and papers.

If it's older than 5 years, I don't mind just the watch and original strap/bracelet.

If it's older than 10 years, just the watch itself is OK.

as long as it is authentic I am ok. Have two pieces myself, no cert with box. Call me crazy but I would like the box if possible.

For sure the warranty card, papers and box must be present... this is to ensure when I need to track the origin of the watch, I can do so easily. Missing end links, outer box, tags can be neglected IMHO.

If the price is good, I don't care about the other stuff.

Watch history is important (not a stolen or dubious item) as it will end up at the Service Centre sometime in the future anyway so it will come back with new papers.

For me complete full set For modern watch if possible, because will add more collection value to the watch. Vintage piece difficult to find comes with full set, but if can find that's super duper great. I love collect things!  Haha
I own a AP vintage piece before this, and I drop to AP enquiry for the certificate for my AP vintage piece, it cost CHF1000(around 4.4K ringgit) and need send back to Switzerland to do authenticity and checking only they will come out with just a "paper"

Incomplete set could face confiscate risk if the watch come with wrong sources.

Full set is an OCD for many people. Plus it does help with resale value (since most people want the full set). But if it is for your own wearing purpose, and you are ok with it, then i say go for it since it will be lower in pricing terms. Plus! some watches that are difficult to find sometimes do come by as watch only.

If the watch is in mint condition,
If the watch for me is a keeper,
If the price is at least 30~40% below market value,
Than I don't mind just the watch itself.....of course it has to be authenticated first.
