Cheergiant
« on: March 13, 2012, 05:28:15 PM »
I have been wanting to visit this place for sometime now but never seems to make it there. Perhaps it was the distance, it is about an hour away from where I am. It did not help when terrenceterrence came over and showed me one of their products. The place I am talking about is the strap maker Cheergiant located in the city of Taoyuan, Taiwan (where the international airport is located).

Cheergiant is a family run business and the person 'heading' it seems to be George Lan. I met him today and he is pretty cool, old school but cool. They are into leather products, as you can see from the shop. It is only natural that they venture into strap making. The leather that they use is pretty limited, mostly crocodile/ alligator and calf leather. You would not find exotic leathers like stingray, vintage ammo, Swiss Ammo, painted leather etc. They do have crazy horse and even Horoween (limited amount and colour, black and maroon).

I like the place and the people there. They are very open about their stuff and they have been doing this for over 27 years.

Some of their products.

This will end up as a laptop cover.

A phone pouch. Lots of love went into making these.

George working table. You can see that I have blanked out the receipts and documentation. The interesting thing is that they get people sending them leather (like vintage ammo pouches) to have straps made. I was fortunate to get to see an actual vintage ammo pouch that they got and was going to cut into straps. A first for me. How cool is that.

The display cabinet showing their straps and other products.

And this is the reason I went there. To check out the straps for the Bell & Ross. I have to stop buying straps ......

I will certainly go back for another visit, and this time I will bring a better camera.

Mods, please remove or reassign to another place if not appropriate.

Yes the ammo pouch is used for storing ammo. Each soldier is issued one, not sure what are the different types used by both sides, but I read somewhere the popular model is the German Karbinger 98. It can hold 30 rounds. The best part about the ammo pouch I held was that you could still smell the gun powder smell. How awesome is that.

KLCC got a leather shop that custom make strap

I will only go into this, if

1. I loose my job n can't find job so 'gei dai jao gei dai, siu mai jao siu mai'
2. I can afford early retirement, then run this small business to pass time
3. Some1 fund me into this business
4. Mwf grow too well till owner pay me to run it n we use Mwf brand to start this business

So jus wish, promote watch collection in msia... The market will take its nature soon
So far v only hv datuk jimmy choo success in shoe making, that also bcoz he started in Europe
A brand start from msia is even tougher!!!

3 straps, which is bad considering I went from 2 B&R to 0 and now back to 1 but I already have 3 original straps, 2 from Combat Straps, 3 from Cheergiant and 1 incoming from Gunny.

Thanks for the report!

George is always great to deal with; fast, efficient and beautiful work. Very reasonable prices too!

Love the natural linen used on the stitches and also the wonderful way of reinforcing the keepers. Way better than those HK made straps. With more slicker marketing, he'll definitely be on par with Wotancraft, Ted Su and etc...

Had a few of his straps and would not hesitate to recommend anyone who wants to get one custom made.
